History

What makes a person a person? Does it matter how he's born, or is it how he's raised that is more important? If it was nature, then Sena would probably have been a fearsome creature who's only job was to kill and devour those he was set upon, regardless of who he is. Thankfully, nurture seems to have won out as Sena is the generally goodhearted and affable man with the funny hat.

Sena was created as an autonomous child-appearing assassin by a corrupt scientist that wanted a way to get rid of his opponents without it being traced back to him. The homunculus he created had a need for no name and was built to be stealthy and efficient at its job. For many months, this... childish machine did the scientist's dirty work, appearing in cities and towns around Rassern, killing and stealing as ordered.

On one such mission in Askot Port the homunculus did not return to the labs straight away, instead deciding to walk around and explore a bit. From the fishmongers and angry housewives of the port, he had begun to understand the idea of 'free time' (of which the other people seemed to have none of) and had felt incline to take some. He would not have any if he returned back, since he would be sent on another assignment the moment he returned. Walking through the city, he met an old minstrel who was entertaining the other street urchins with tales of people living under water, or of the lost city of Avengrade. For some reason, the man had taken a shining to the "blue haired urchin with the bad hair cut", going out of his way to talk to the boy during his day 'off' not caring about being snarled at each time he struck up conversation.

The minstrel even followed the homunculus out of the port, deciding that 'Sena' - a name the man coined for him - was much more interesting, 'even if he was more prickly than a hedgehog.' Unsure of just why the man was following him, but unwilling to kill him (Sena did not kill people other than those he was told to or who were threats and the man wasn't quite a threat) or lead him to the labs (which he knew with absolute certainty would be a bad idea), Sena tried to find some way to get the minstrel to go away. After a lot of hedging, wheedling, and one obstinate stare, Sena got him to go away but only after he promised to meet the man in Eldridge in one week's time. It was probably the best he could get, although promises were a foreign concept to the homunculus. Sena stole into one of Rassern's libraries when he returned to town to pursue a dictionary. A promise was:

A declaration or assurance that one will do a particular thing or that guarantees that a particular thing will happen.
Verb, to assure someone that one will definitely do, give, or arrange something; undertake or declare that something will happen.
A pledge, a vow. His word.

Sena had given his word to meet the minstrel in Eldridge. That was impossible to guarantee if he went back to the labs and got a new assignment, as there was never anyone in the mountains who would give the scientist any trouble. The scientist would not allow him to keep his promise, and that would mean Sena would be breaking his word. Breaking one's word was not a good thing, and Sena had been ordered before to do his best to do good so long as it does not interfere with the assignments. Ergo, the scientist had to go.

Sometimes when Sena thinks back to this time, he's surprised how easy it was to kill the scientist. To walk into the lab as he had always done, take a scalpel on the operating table and throw it through his rib cage; to look down at the pain-filled face of his creator and inform him that his name was Sena and he was not going to listen to him anymore. But that's what he did before turning on his heel and walking away, leaving the man to die of blood loss or exposure, or maybe some of the other experiments he opened the cages for. Back then, Sena didn't care about anything but to meet up with the minstrel in Eldridge. He had a promise to keep.

Sena grew up, always at the heels of his minstrel, learning about people and life and music, his mind absorbing all that he was learning, the things the minstrel was teaching him. The stories he heard, be they the tales of gods and epic heroes or the lives of ordinary people, fascinated Sena and he strives to remember all that he hears and encounters. At some point, the minstrel explained how all stories are formed by truth, and these truth creates the history of Serenia. The two parted ways after fifteen years together, with a fervent promise to continue writing songs and sharing songs, so that the other can hear what they're, doing no matter how far apart they are. Sena has kept his side of the bargain these last five years, but the old minstrel hasn't penned anything new in some time now. It's worrying and he tries to find clues about his whereabouts as he searches for Truth. This has been proven harder than Sena anticipated though, since it seems as if he simply vanished, most people's memories of him disappearing as well. All that he has found has been vague recollections, which is worrying. Being forgotten, that is the worse fear of any bard or minstrel who is invested in his craft.

Good, evil? Bah, like Sena has times to deal with these so called "absolutes". He sees the world in shades of gray, and cares little of the fighting except for the fact that maybe he could find out more about the world by observing the sides. And maybe playing them off each other, but they seem to do a dandy job of doing that already. As a homunculus, Sena was created to be fast and dexterous, relying mostly on his speed to get himself out of trouble. His ability to manipulate mana is mostly limited to his Bard Songs, the artes he has learned from the old minstrel and created himself, although with enough energy expenditure, he can do other basic magics. Sena sticks to his songs and other techniques, since most of them can replicate basic magic spells well enough. By his tenth year, Sena had aged to be the equivalent of an eighteen year old human, and hasn't changed yet. He's not sure if that means he won't be aging, or if things had slowed down.

Personality

Sena wears an easy going smile, preferring to be affable and playful whenever possible because, really, who would want to hear from a bard who never laughed? He can easily be serious and pensive, but often tries to keep his tone and appearance light and playful even in the most dire of circumstances. Anger is a foreign emotion to Sena, and he has wondered if it's because he can not feel it, or if nothing has happened to truly anger him. There have been events that sadden him on occasion and plenty of things have made him happy too, but never anger. Sena thinks that's a good thing, since he can keep his thoughts together, something he has seen does not always happen when a person becomes angry.

There are certain things that can set Sena off, sending him back into the blank creature he was when first created, more than willing to attack those he deems are threats. He has a soft spot for children, and destroying history or hurting his friends are really good ways to get a knife held up to one's throat. In an effort not to startle others when he feels the blankness overwhelming him, Sena tends to keep his smile on his face but those smiles are very empty and tend to be more jarring than anything, especially to those who know him. Some would point out that this is the 'fabled anger' Sena never feels, but he rebuffs this idea entirely. There is no anger in the utter blankness and lack of anything he was when first created.

In the end, Sena searches for 'Truth' - for the stories behind the stories, the tales half-remembered and the tales forgotten and all the tales in between, in a pursuit to tell the history of the world. It is only then, he sees, will he be able to create a song that will be always remembered and sung throughout the ages, to never be forgotten. And if a song he writes can withstand the test of time and eternity, then he would be remembered forever as well, to never be forgotten like his master. Everything he does is in search for that.
