PERSONALITY

Dakota is a very compassionate person, and good at making people feel welcome. he was never really one for rumours or stereotypes, and judges a person himself before he decides anything. Dakota heads straight to the roots of problems, though his specialty is with people. He's great at giving advice and working through emotions and conflict. Dakota is reasonable, quick-minded and very intelligent. He hasn't taken an IQ test, but if he did, he would definitely score something high. Dakota is full of random facts and knowledge, always having something to connect to a situation. Contrary to his talents, he wants to be a teacher when he grows up.

LIKES/DISLIKES
- Dakota absolutely loves reading. Mystery, horror, sci-fi, adventure; anything, really. Hand him a book and he'll finish it by the end of the day. His classmates like to challenge him by giving him longer and harder books to see if he can finish them, and he always hands them back at the end bell, completed. He also likes drawing and astronomy, and having his own puzzle challenges with Judy. He always looses, wether its making the puzzle himself for Judy to solve or trying to solve one quicker. He also likes playing with little kids. Something about the innocence of make-believe and house make him happy.
- Dakota is vehemently against studying. He absolutely hates it. Its annoying and wastes time, so he doesn't do it.

STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES

Dakota is effortlessly brilliant at school. He aces all his tests and projects. His quick-thinking gives him an edge, especially when he needs to bullshit or win an argument or debate. English and Psychology are undoubtedly his best subjects, and the areas he shows most promise in. He's a great strategist, and always thinks ahead for an unidentified amount of steps.

Dakota is unmotivated and undetermined. His relaxed nature is definitely something he has to work on, even if it doesn't effect his performance in school (for the most part). For example, He is not very athletic. He's more of an observer, and this is quite troublesome when it comes to gym. The only thing motivating him to build some sort of muscle mass is his boyfriend (he just wants to pick him up, goddammit.)

"Don't let Judy lie to you; I'm the king."

BACKSTORY

Dakota has always been very smart, and excelled in almost all of his classes in his early years. His teachers treated him with a tad more respect than other students, which everyone noticed. Dakota never tried to flaunt his talents to impress people, or act conceited, so it confused him when his classmates would subtly ignore him. Instead of getting bummed out and isolating himself, Dakota worked to become less intimidating. He'd strike up friendly conversation with his classmates, or just jump in whenever one of them had a problem to offer help. He reasoned that if he showed he wasn't all brains, they'd realize that he wasn't so bad and would actually connect with him. Dakota gained a lot of great friends, and his childhood was happy.

During the end of his early years, things started to get complicated. his teachers did some background checks to see just how far his intellect reached, and went behind his back to talk to his parents. They wanted to introduce him to some experts, and his parents agreed. This was quite troublesome when he walked home one day to find a complete strangers on their couch, chatting it up and sipping tea with his mom and dad. There were computers out and stacks of papers on the table. Dakota slowed his walk, realizing what was happening. He had overheard his teachers gossiping in the hallway a couple days ago, so he kind of knew this would happen sooner or later.

one of the professors asked everybody to leave the room and Dakota to take a seat across from him. He'd hand Dakota one sheet of equations at a time to complete. the difficulty raised each time, and every so often he'd look up and the professor would be observing him or typing away on his laptop. once Dakota handed the last sheet back, the professor excused himself, and the next one walked in. This process repeated for a while, going through english and science. He was sent up to his room so the adults could chat, and a couple hours later he was called down.

The professors explained that he clearly had the talents and intelligence to go further in life than this city. They explained to him that there was a special school overseas for the gifted like himself; that going to this school could fully develop his interests and talents, and he could get the education he needed to provide a bright future. His parents eventually convinced him to go, and a month later they were moving away.

Dakota found it boring. The classes themselves were good, if not challenging, but the people were an issue. Back home he had friends, genuine connections, but here all he had were psych students trying to use him as a subject. Everybody was busy, prioritizing studying over making friends. Dakota wouldn't admit it, but he felt lonely. He had nobody to talk to but his parents, since he sure as hell wouldn't talk to the psych students. He wanted to go home. Besides, two and a half years here would be good enough, right?

And so after plenty of begging and minimal bribing, His parents allowed him to move back to their hometown. Their love for his happiness outweighed their desire for him to get a promising job.

He easily got into highschool once he got back. It was relatively easy to get to know his classmates even though it was the middle of the year, and he decided he liked this place a lot more.

Sometimes he'd spend his lunches under the bleachers in the school yard, reading a different book each time. One spring day he was just chilling in his usual spot when he overheard a conversation above him. Some dudes had joined the guy that usually sat there, and it sounded casual at first, but he could tell that these guys had hidden motives. He decided to listen in for a couple minutes and see where this would lead.

Once it was clear that these guys were just trying to get money, he decided he had enough. If the guy up there wouldn't defend himself, somebody else would have to. Dakota climbed up over the back and sat down, fixing the guys with a glare, "I'm getting really sick of what I'm hearing, its ruining my appetite. can you fuck off?"

The one who looked like he'd vape in a school bathroom spoke back first, smugly, as if he was the cleverest person on these here bleachers, "oh? and what if we don't?"

Oh, Dakota found joy in putting assholes like this guy in their places. "You want a verbal answer or a demonstration?"

"Please, like a pipsqueak like you could do anything to hurt us," a member of the Vape Guy's posse spoke up.

"well, since you asked so nicely," Dakota started, then promptly kicked Vape Guy directly in the knee. He crumpled up like a piece of paper in a garbage compactor, rolling and whining like a little bitch down the bleachers. His pussy posse ran after him in a cowardly retreat, and Dakota and the stranger were left alone. The blondie was looking at him like a little child admiring their favourite mascot.

"um- thanks?" Blondie said.

"It was no big deal- just doing what any decent human would do. Want to join me down there?" He asked, pointing to his usual eating spot. Blondie always sat alone above him, and that didn't seem like a very happy arrangement, so why not make another friend? Blondie accepted his invitation, and they climbed down. "The names Dakota, by the way," he said, settling into his spot.

"Judy."

-

Dakota enjoyed having Judy around. He was a really nice kid, and his smile when he talked about something he liked lit up rooms. At first he was really withdrawn and fidgety and quiet, and Dakota realized that Judy may have some underlying issues. As much as he wanted to help Judy, he didn't want to be one of those dreaded oversea psychology students. In Judy's case, acting natural was the best way to go about it.

And it worked. Judy got more comfortable around him, at least with what he could see physically. Judy was lively and pure and funny and nice. They had conversations that never bored him, and their friendship quickly developed. Mayhaps he had a tiny crush on the boy; and when he brought a rubix cube to school one day that Judy solved in mere seconds, smiling excitedly, he was fucking whipped

Grade nine ended all too quickly, and he had to say goodbye to Judy for the Summer. He'd definitely miss his friend a whole lot, but it was only two months. His parents wanted to visit his grandparents who were on the other side of the world. At least the long plane ride would give him plenty of time to finish a new book series.

During their travels he visited all sorts of places. He couldn't help but miss Judy, and made sure to take lots of pictures to show him when he got back. He got souvenirs from every place he visited, and a large hoodie for Judy to play it safe. Who knew how much he'd grow over the summer?

Once they got to his grandparents, he was pleasantly surprised. They lived in a huge mansion-like house, windows everywhere to take in the forest scenery. They were astrologists and owned a large planetarium in the city that Dakota was dying to see. He learned a lot while he was with them, and even made some connections of his own with some of their friends.

When his time there was up, he was sad he had to leave all of this behind. His grandparents were kind people and he would be forever grateful for his experiences. Then he remembered he could see Judy again, and he excitedly packed up. Unfortunately, a storm hit, and their flight was cancelled. Dakota was a little upset about this, since that meant he'd be missing school. He didn't want Judy to worry about him, or even think he wouldn't be returning. He knew Judy tended to overthink things, and would definitely come to a negative conclusion.

He ended up missing a week of school trying to fix up his sleep schedule, unpacking, and settling back in. As soon as he was ready, he headed to Judy's house with his souvenirs, since it was after school and he would most likely be there. So he was surprised when his dad explained he was trying out for the basketball team at school. He gave James (yes, they were on a first name basis. Judy's parents were just as kind and welcomeing as he was) some souvenirs to give to Marley and Millie, then hightailed it to the school to deliver the hoodie.

Of course, he was surprised at what he saw. Judy was flying through the excersizes, a happy smile on his face. He looked stronger and taller than before, and it was such a good change. Once the basketball players divided themselves for two teams, he brought his fingers to his mouth and whistled to catch Judy's attention. "Do your best!" he called out once he got it, then received a smile and a thumbs up in return.

-

When the game ended, Dakota left the gymnasium to wait outside. When Judy finally came out to look for him, smiling brightly, he spoke. "congrats on making the team! the jersey's a good look on you," he started, taking in how much Judy changed over the summer. He was definitely taller now, but only by an inch or two, and packed on some muscle. He still had that soft look to his face, though, and Dakota was swooning. "Sorry about being late. Timezones sucked up my sleep schedule, and I also had to unpack and all that jazz. I went to your house earlier to drop off souvenirs, and thats when your dad told me you'd be here. Speaking of souvenirs," he lifted up the hoodie for Judy to take, "I got you this."

Judy put it on, and Dakota found him unbelievably soft looking. If this kept up his heart would explode.

They told each other about their summer experiences, talking until they had to go. "see you tomorrow!" Judy said.

"Of course!" Dakota called back.

-

It was quite obvious to anyone that the two were dancing around each other, and neither of them were very graceful. Dakota might've been the less obvious one, but that really wasn't saying much. They were sickeningly sweet together, and it was clear to all their friends that they liked each other. If only they would do something about it.

And so, the basketball team hatched a plan. It was one you'd see in any cliche fan fiction; Shove them into a closet and refuse to let them out until they confessed.

The perfect opportunity came when they won their first game of the season in 11th grade, and to celebrate, hosted a party at the captains house. there was pizza and drinks (but not alcohol, since these kids are responsible,) and it was a fun time. Significant others of the team were there, the cheerleaders, their friends. They were goofing around and acting like the kids they were.

Then came the time for party games. The basketball team had done a little research, and came across something called the "Kings game," which would be perfect for what they wanted to accomplish.

"Basically, there's a cup full of sticks. each stick has a number on it, but one stick has a crown on it. whoever draws that stick can order the other numbers to do whatever they want; but the king doesn't know who has what number. get it? They can choose as many people as they please." the captain, Jeremy, explained. Everybody was in on the plan, except Judy and Dakota. all the sticks would be labeled with ones and twos, and everybody would have a stick with a crown on it hidden on their person, So Judy and Dakota wouldn't draw the kings stick. All they hoped was that the two wouldn't both draw the same number.

Lady Luck was on their side. On the first turn their plan succeeded, and after Jeremy said "one and two, seven minutes in heaven," while gesturing to the closet, both Judy and Dakota stood up. The two were suspicious, embarrassed, and rightfully so as they were locked in.

"So..." Judy started awkwardly.

"I wasn't really planning on doing this, much less in a closet, but its better to just get it over with," Dakota started, sighing as he leaned against the wall. He knew something was up, and this situation just confirmed it. "I kinda really like you. y'know, Romantically."

"Really? You're not tricking me?"

"Why would I do that?" Dakota said, sensing the vulnerability in Judy's voice. He heard some shifting, then two arms wrap around him, and Judy's voice in his ear.

"I kinda really like you too. Y'know, romantically."

"shut up."
