General

Alex Miller is a main character in Story Beats who made his first appearance during the play's resurgence Season 5 and is the last main character to be added to the novel. He is a dorky werewolf who often struggles to come to terms with his unique strengths and abilities but does his best to live a normal life.

Personality

Human Form

Alex is best described as being a "lovable dork". He's generally a good guy who just wants to be normal, but being a werewolf makes building relationships harder because he worries about other people finding out. He enjoys hanging out with his small group of friends and doing things like playing video games and also his guitar with the goal of becoming an influential musician someday. While he doesn't lean too hard in the direction of being overly confident or the type to be cool, he has his moments of showing both sides. He's confident in the things he can do, such as the aforementioned guitar playing and most any physical activity- the later being thanks to his curse. When doing something he particularly enjoys, he has a tendency to show off which may or may not end well depending on the subject matter. There are also times where he tries to act cooler than normal which only serves to highlight his dorkiness. When around that particular girl he has a crush on, he becomes a flustered mess and struggles to get his thoughts in order. Thankfully, he doesn't get angry very often which is likely why he has better control over his wolf side than most. He really shines when it comes down to protecting those close to him as he's more than willing to do whatever it takes to keep them safe from harm. Perhaps he's better described as a kind of "lovable protagonist" who often gets dragged into various situations and reluctantly goes along with it, knowing that he doesn't have the mental fortitude to outmatch the other's sheer tenacity.

Werewolf Form

Alex was never too thrilled about becoming a werewolf but he has learned to accept it and, while he's still fairly cautious about things like shifting or using his various enhanced abilities out of fear that something might go wrong, he's slowly but surely learning to embrace it and enjoy it. After all, he can't deny that his improved physical prowess and boosted vitality are a huge boon. As far as personality goes, his wolf form is essentially the same as his human form, though there are some small differences. Most notable is the fact that Wolf Alex cannot hide his true emotions so he tends to be more playful and affectionate. If he's angry or upset, it's on full display for everyone to see. He's also more reckless and impulsive, not thinking on things too much and instead acting based on his instincts and experiences. An interesting trait is that he tends to annoy rather easily whenever Nathan teases him or cracks jokes at his expense, especially when he's referred to as a dog- something that mildly annoys his human self as well. Of course, his general behavior and control over himself varies depending on the lunar cycle with his wolf instincts being stronger during a full moon and weaker on random nights. Further expanding on his desire to protect those close to him, he can be very protective of Nathan during times of stronger instinct, seeing him as part of his pack and wanting to shield him from harm. This is something that can result in him being hostile to other creatures who get too close. He also cannot speak while in his wolf form, instead being reduced to grunts and growls that sound like he's trying to say something. Thankfully Nathan is able to understand him, though it has never been explained how.

Appearance

Human Form

Alex is a tall young man in his 20s with an athletic, muscular build. He has shorter, copper hair (not ginger!) and green eyes. His outfit consists of a purple striped hoodie, a gray t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers. The jeans can either be the classic blue, beige, or black. He also has a unique tribal tattoo on his right shoulder that extends down his arm but is hidden by short sleeves. He was never officially drawn in the novel due to debuting in Season 5 after the illustrations had stopped, but his signature color would have been purple.

He essentially has three separate forms:

Human form - His natural human self as described above.
Wolfman form - A half-human, half-wolf mix where he has yellow eyes, fangs, claws, sideburns, etc. Looks like a wolfman!
Werewolf form - Fully transformed into a werewolf as described below.

Important for those wanting to draw stuff: The artwork I have of him is always wildly inconsistent because I have trouble imagining what he should look like. His hair is copper brown and intended to be shorter and a bit more styled. Be sure to ask about other details so I can get some accurate reference art!

Werewolf Form

His wolf form is over two feet taller than his human form, standing at 8'2 which is on the tall side for a werewolf. Wolf Alex is very muscular and has gray fur; lighter on his stomach and the tip of his tail. He also has black on the tips of his ears, rather thick eyebrows, and his eyes are yellow, indicating that he is a beta. While not every drawing of him has this, his top two fangs usually stick out of his mouth and hang downwards on either side. He also has the ability to shift into a regular, large wolf on all fours, but this form is one he hasn't had much experience with so it's very rare to see him like this. The tattoo he has in his human form also carries over to his wolf form, making it easier to identify him.

Relationships

• Nathan Peppers - Inside of Story Beats, Nathan was originally hesitant to bring him on as a new character in the novel, but they quickly bonded after being paired up together for a variety of scenarios, namely Princess Sarah's shenanigans. In Ankle Antics, Alex attempts to prove himself worthy of the role of "main character's best friend" which he manages to do after stealing Zack's pants. Afterwards, the two became best friends and were frequently seen together in the chapters that followed. Outside of Story Beats, otherwise known as fan stories and scenarios that take place in an alternate universe from the novel, Nathan and Alex are best friends who are essentially brothers, spending all their time hanging out and helping one another with their problems. He almost always joins Alex in the forest during full moons and isn't afraid of his werewolf side- in fact, he's obsessed with it and thinks it's the coolest thing he's ever seen. He likes to tease Alex and joke around, mainly poking fun at his wolf side, and Alex often looks for opportunities to tease him back. Nathan serves as the person who makes light of the otherwise scary situation, offering encouragement and not being afraid to do whatever it takes to help his friend. No matter what happens, Nathan is always by Alex's side.
• Amber Shine - Being as clueless as she is, Amber is naturally quite oblivious to Alex being a werewolf but considers him to be a fun friend because she generally likes everybody. The two have bonded on a few occasions, like when he helped her confront her past in 13th Curse and showed up to offer advice in Night of the FBI. Overall, these two work really well together and would be a great secondary option for a friend dynamic. Alex likes her as well, often saying that she's a fun person to hang out with.
• FlamDawg Disco - Alex appeared to help FlamDawg navigate the Deep Ice Caverns below the Slushball Ice Rink when he became trapped in them during Frozen Slushball, but aside from that the two haven't interacted much at all. In fact, when Alex narrated during Eyes of the Wolf (Part II), which was only a few chapters before the end of the novel, he didn't even know FlamDawg's name and simply referred to him as "that fire dog guy".
• Zack Hakton - Like the other characters, Alex considers Zack to be an enemy and does not like him. Throughout Season 5, Zack frequently stole his pants along with everyone else's and also harassed him with a wrecking ball which was enough to make him angry. He tried to remain impartial to the situation out of fear of escalating it, though only until he saw Zack playing his guitar without permission. He then confronted Zack in Wolf's Wreck-oning and fought against him, defeating him with ease. It was then that he realized that Zack is more of a silly villain and shouldn't be taken too seriously.
• Sarah Radish - Sarah's general lust for attractive men means that she finds Alex quite hot, though seeing as she never commits to any one man, the most she ever does is innocently flirt with him or ogle him with binoculars. She did once chain him up during #MCM: Mad Case of Monday and Nathan had to save him, but overall the two haven't interacted much.
• Sindr Powers - Sindr seems to have a romantic interest in Alex but chooses to show it by being generally rude to him. Seeing as he was based off of the guy who was her supposed boyfriend at the time, they were originally supposed to be a couple but when he became his own separate character it was left as one-sided.
• Princess Sarah - Princess Sarah treats Alex as a subject just like anyone else but finds him to be of greater use thanks to his superior physical abilities and keen senses. She often orders him to assist her with various tasks beyond her means such as confronting Zack in The Bunker of Princess Sarah, getting the crown jewels back from a thief in The Stolen Jewels of Princess Sarah, and helping her find a culprit in The Whodunit of Princess Sarah. Unfortunately, she doesn't treat him well and bosses him around so he doesn't really like her and gets annoyed when she summons him to do something.

Werewolf Details

Alex is what is known as a "trueblood" werewolf, meaning that he is far stronger than a normal one. He's basically on par with an alpha, having the same level of strength, agility, and even the ability to turn others by biting. Unfortunately, he has often struggled with uncontrollable shifting and may suddenly start transforming at any given time, something that also makes resisting the full moons even more difficult. Thankfully, he has always had good control over himself and rarely fully gives in to his feral instincts. Nathan helps Alex with his training, both physically and mentally, and says that it's his goal to help him be fully comfortable with his other side. While Alex doesn't always understand why Nathan is always so excited to see him in his wolf form, he's definitely happy they're friends and that he has someone he can talk to about the supernatural side of his life.

Strengths

• Superior physical abilities including strength, speed, and general resilience against physical harm
• Enhanced senses including sight (can see clearly in the dark), smell, and hearing
• Is able to heal extremely quickly from any kind of injury and can't contract diseases (except for supernatural ones)
• Strong sense of self-control, meaning he rarely becomes a wild animal

Weaknesses

• The usual weaknesses (silver, wolfsbane, etc.)
• Has trouble controlling his ability to shift and will often do so without warning
• Tendency to shift at least partially during times of strong negative emotions
• Can never seem to remember to undress before shifting
• Sometimes gets stuck in his wolf form and can't shift back for a while
