turns out a dream explained canaria's backstory to me!

tw ableism, men experiencing lesbophobia /hj

he is a sort of sinister fae autistic being who initially lived in society (sort of fantasy medieval era vibes) (moved into town around age 10), but was, basically without fail, loathed by everyone in his hometown. you'd probably think "well SOMEONE must have been willing to be his friend" except. No. because the fantasy medieval people were extremely afraid of him and also just thought he was a weird awkward sweaty creep who was only good for an occasional laugh or opportunity to be cruel and intolerant. fantasy medieval people LOVE that shit man they ACHE for it and also this is 100% more a metaphor than a realistic story abt intelligent, complex people, because that kind of behavior is what comes out when "normal" people are faced with an autistic person. i've lived it, i would know.

he was not treated like a person on any level, just a scapegoat for everything the town feared according to its strict religious and social beliefs, even though he was nothing but earnest and kind to others - just a tiny bit... creepy at times? he notices things most people don't, and is accused of stalking. he tries to be polite and nice to others, and is accused of wanting something from them - especially women, who see him as this desperate freak who is obviously sexually obsessed with them, as they are "normal".

somehow, around age 19, kali (sort of lesbionically) found a wife. the 23 year old girl-next-door brand-new captain of the guard, amberly (yes that amberly) - who understood that he wasn't bad, just different. this was not to last long, as amberly had many enemies in high powerful society for being a normal person who does not want to use her power for abject greed and evil. this is also a metaphor. she was especially hated by sabin (yes that sabin), a disgraced noble who was disowned by her family for resisting an arranged marriage, and her grudge didn't stop with amberly. it extended to kali as well, because of course it did, and every time he tried to make polite conversation with her and show her that maybe, just maybe, he and amberly weren't the monsters she thought they were, she accused him of attempting (poorly) to proposition her for sex, because he was just that oblivious to how rancid he was to "normal" people.

she didn't have a permanent home, she seemed to just sleep at town hall for the time being.

sabin threatened to have amberly very severely punished for... something. she just didn't know what, yet. i guess she didn't feel like it would go off smoothly if she simply had amberly exiled for associating with kali. this became an oft-made joke between the married pair. what was she going to do, have amberly executed for witchcraft?

well. sort of, yes. and it all happened so fast and out of nowhere that neither of them got a chance to really react to what was happening, or stop it. one day, she was seized from their home by the city guard and sentenced to death for conspiracy against the guard and town. in reality, she was actually looking into corruption in the guard, and no one wanted her to reveal what she was starting to learn. she didn't even learn the true depths of it, she didn't have time. sabin was there in the front row of the crowd that surrounded the town square with the gibbets and burning stakes.

she was beheaded, weirdly enough. she wasn't even allowed to be one whole being, whether as a hanged corpse or as ashes.

it was then that kali, watching from stage right, realized that kindness is pointless when offered to people who don't even see you as human. the rage came slowly, and he even attempted polite conversation with the people around him. oddly enough, now, people seemed to be willing to make conversation, as if somehow, this execution had given kali a chance to learn his lesson, and something about that snapped his brain into pieces. he spoke politely, but with much hidden vitriol, much bitter sarcasm, all of which went unnoticed. ironically, allistics are the least socially-adept people on the planet, because they don't have to fight to not be constantly harassed and bullied just for speaking. great. it was wonderful. these people wouldn't even give him the joy of playing jokes on them over his now-dead wife. they weren't even /entertainingly/ gullible, they responded as if... the sarcasm was actually straight fact, and what had happened was completely natural.

the indignity was unbearable. he just about vomited, but he held it in like he always did. and then he went to talk to sabin. he gave her the same icy kindness, even offering the homeless noble a home in one of his extra rooms. there was a few vacancies now, after all. :) it was almost like a test. would she be just as brainless as her cohorts? he barely knew what he was saying at this point, he was so broken with shock and grief that had only barely begun to set in. he hadn't cried yet, but his face was buzzing violently.

she simply sneered and said his obsessive lust with her was going much too far, and he needed to learn that no one normal would ever love someone like him.

he grabbed her wrist with all his strength, digging into her flesh with his long nails, before she could walk away and called her body diseased, but then the dream ended.

Anyway, Canaria lives all alone in a cottage in the woods, now.
