Réna o Alcar
A longsword that gives a +2 to both attack and damage rolls. On top of this and the regular slashing damage, it also does an extra 1d8 of Radiant damage (extra 2d8 when attacking fiends or undead).
+1 Shield
A regular +1 shield. When wielded, it adds +3 total to AC. Given that Emrys wears plate armour, this shield gives him an AC of 21.
Divine Smite
Starting at 2nd level, when you hit a creature with a melee weapon attack, you can expend one spell slot to deal radiant damage to the target, in addition to the weapon’s damage. The extra damage is 2d8 for a 1st-level spell slot, plus 1d8 for each spell level higher than 1st, to a maximum of 5d8. The damage increases by 1d8 if the target is an undead or a fiend, to a maximum of 6d8.
Story
Background
Emrys Perdue was born right alongside his twin brother, Carwyn Perdue. Growing up, the two of them were as close, often confiding in each other. When Wyn began to show signs of wild magic, Emrys was the first to know. For a while, Emrys thought Wyn and his powers were amazing! However, Wyn's magic became harder for him to control. Soon enough, their parents learned of Wyn's abilities, and began looking down on him for them. Emrys, now thinking of Wyn's magic as dangerous, tried to help Wyn control his powers. This only ended up hurting Wyn, causing him to run away while they were still just children.
When Emrys reached his teen years, he began training to become a knight, hoping to protect people and to one day find his brother, Wyn. Moved by his noble heart, the god Varanthir granted him holy powers, which allowed Emrys to take the oath of devotion. After finishing his knight training, he began to go by Sir Perdue. There were two reasons for this. First, Wyn wouldn't recognize the name Emrys, as Emrys had still been living as a girl the last time he had seen Wyn; Second, and most important, Emrys hated himself for pushing Wyn away, and had thus given up his self, becoming just the family name.
Anyways, Sir Perdue is 29 years old when the campaign starts, doing vague adventurer work with his party; Karmos Kyil, a protection domain tiefling cleric; Karmos's niece, Quirkilxa Kyil, a wild magic tiefling sorcerer, and someone who reminded Emrys greatly of his brother at that age; and Magenta, an eldritch knight yuan-ti fighter. Emrys and Magenta had a brief romantic relationship, although Magenta's continued recklessness and more evil deeds led to Emrys quickly losing interest, much to the delight of Quirkilxa, who had been shipping Karmos and Emrys together since the beginning. Later on, Wyn Perdue also joined the party, although he and Emrys didn't recognize each other until after the completition of their first mission together.
Campaign and Afterwards
The party's jobs grew more intense, until finally it was revealed that Aracheus Perdue, the uncle of Emrys and Wyn, was trying to bring about the apocalypse with a demonic army. During the final battle, Quirkilxa and Magenta were both killed. Wyn was the only one of the survivors interested in resuming with hero work, which led to his death shortly after. With just Emrys and Karmos left alive, they moved in together, beginning a tentative romantic relationship.
Emrys and Karmos got married just three years post-campaign, and another five years later, they found an abandoned fire genasi baby. Although they hadn't planned on having children, they were quick to go through with adopting them. The baby was named Quinn, after both Quirkilxa and Wyn. Ironically enough, they would quickly learn that the baby was a wild magic sorcerer, just like both of their namesakes.
Trivia
General
- Emrys is my second D&D character and the first Paladin I ever made.
- I made Emrys because of having to study Arthurian legends at school. I just wanted a stereotypical knight.
- Both Emrys and Karmos were cis until April 2021. This is because we are cowards.
Combat
- Being a protection fighter, he'll often protect his teammates that our close by from getting hit.
- He uses his spells more often than the average paladin, so he doesn't do divine smites as much as he could.
- Heavily prefers using one-handed weapons so he can also be holding his shield.
Social
- Emrys is kind, but can definitely come across as overbearing at times due to how loud and enthusiastic he gets.
- Karmos was the first person to start calling him Emrys, while everyone else kept calling him Sir Perdue.
- Despite getting married, both Emrys and Karmos kept their last names, since the rest of their respective families were deceased. Quinn's surname is Kyil-Perdue.
Design
- He wears his god's holy symbol- a sword with a sunburst behind it- as a long dangly earring.
- After growing his hair out, he typically wears his hair partially up. When he's doing farmwork, he'll put it fully in a ponytail.
- Emrys unironically wears fannypacks and khakis. They're comfortable and practical.

[ husband ]
Emrys and Karmos had something of a rocky start to their relationship, with Emrys believing that Karmos hated him, and trying his hardest to bridge that gap between them. Of course, he'd later learn that he never had to worry about that, with Karmos having fallen for him since early on. Although the two had come to recognize each other's feelings before the final battle, it wasn't until afterwards that they actually got together. Their romance was slow moving and carefully planned, up until the death of Wyn, at which point Emrys proposed early, leading to their marriage. Both Emrys and Karmos are well aware they can't heal all the wounds the war has left on them, but that's fine. They're happily married and will support each other no matter what.
[ twin brother ]
Hurting Wyn and pushing him away was something Emrys had never been able to forgive himself for. Ever since Wyn ran away, Emrys had been looking for him. When he finally managed to find him again, he tried his best to fix his mistakes and protect his brother. Wyn forgave him easily, recognizing that Emrys had just been a child at the time, and the two became close again. When Wyn decided to continue adventuring after they stopped the apocalypse, Emrys was terrified. Still, he didn't want to push Wyn against his wishes ever again, so he let him go. When word got back to Emrys of Wyn's demise, he was absolutely destroyed. He misses Wyn greatly.
[ niece ]
Although he and Karmos weren't together while Quirkilxa was alive, Emrys hopes that Quirkilxa considered him family. She was the number one supporter of his and Karmos's relationship and even called him Uncle Perdue, so that's a good sign. Quirkilxa, being a wild magic sorcerer and about the same age as the twins had been when Wyn ran away, reminded Emrys a lot of Wyn. Because of this, he tried hard to protect her, often using his reactions in battle to try and keep her from getting hit. Like Wyn, he misses her a lot.
[ child ]
Although both Emrys and Karmos were interested in having kids, they had ultimately decided against it, not really trusting themselves to look after a child. Of course, when they found a baby abandoned in the middle of the woods, they had to do something. So, the two reluctantly adopted the kid, naming them Quinn. They then immediately fell into the roles of being the best fathers they could be. This child is going to grow up absolutely spoiled and loved.
