Danielle's childhood was spent trying to appease her abusive mother, in light of their father leaving them. Her mother became obsessed with perfection and demanded that Danielle not only excel but succeed everyone else in her peer group, in some strange way to "stick it to him" and "prove they were better off without him". Danny became obsessed with outward appearances, facades, and grades. There was a brief period of her highschool career where she met someone, someone who really, really...
...pissed her off.
It was shortlived, however, the girl transferred schools after a year. Good. Danielle was glad and not at all disappointed. Definitely didn't cry and think about her every day since.
University meant a dorm, meant finally getting away from her mother, something that was both relieving and terrifying. Who will look after her? Make sure she's okay? Who's cleaning the house? Sure she hired a maid, but - doesn't hurt to call, or visit every now and then-
So caught up in the drama that had defined the vast majority of her life, she never expected anything more, looking forward to the day she finally died.
Imagine her surprise, then, when she saw little miss arch nemesis again, for the first time in years.

A car accident when she was a young child left Joanna the only survivor of her former family. Wracked with guilt and trauma, she was shoved countless times into terrible foster homes, falling victim to many of the abuses commonly felt by those - neglect, physical, emotional - and the worst of all - an actual loving family you finally feel at home in, forced to give you up and abandon you once again. Joanna became angry as a result of her unproccessed and continued trauma - lashing out as a defense mechanism and losing the ability or interest to bond.

It didn't matter, she soon left that highschool, and then two more before she finally managed to graduate, moving out as soon as she was able. She took a gap year, and in the space of her independence... calmed down a bit. She wasn't an angry teenager anymore. She was a traumatized adult. And the question was, what do you want to do with your life?
Not wanting to wallow forever, and as if to prove something, Joanna went back to improve her grades enough to be accepted into university. It was hard work - working full time to support herself and basically teaching herself how to study, but - by some grace of god she managed, and even got a scholarship. Thankful for a new, hard earned opportunity, Joanna couldn't wait to begin.
