Ran is a very emotional person, she always has her thoughts laid bare for anyone to see and she communicates with ease. She is also quite talkative and sociable while not shying away from conflict which makes her stand out from the crowd not only because of her flashy looks. She is aggressive, challenging and fearless as well as optimistic to the point where she always expects the best outcome for herself. This leads to overconfidence and recklessness, though in a lot of cases she can back it up with her abilities and cunning. Ran does everything with high energy and enthusiasm, but she can also be inconsiderate and impulsive and react stubbornly when she is denied anything that she feels like she could easily be able to get. She dislikes the notion that spiders have to be dark and villainy, so she does her best to appear heroic. She usually means well, but her short-tempered nature and the fact that she likes to push her own opinions on people has brought her into dangerous situations more than once.

Ran’s manner of speaking may be harsh, because she has no filter, but since she is a positive person, it mostly becomes apparent when she is telling people (aka Tamaki) to do better and believe in themselves. Her exuberant and playful character still makes her easy to get along with for most people, though a lot are also intimidated by her meddlesomeness. She can also be somewhat of a prankster and try to jump scare her friends, but she never means harm and she is emotionally perceptive enough to see when she’s crossed a border, so she’ll even (reluctantly) apologize.

Ran is fascinated by strange and odd things, especially in nature, and watching those are some of the only things that can render her still for a long time without her losing interest.

Quirk and abilities

Neon Spider

mutation

Ran’s quirk give her heightened senses and spider-like agility. She can use her fangs for a dry bite. While it is painful, they don’t secret venom. Her artistic personality shows in the patterns of her spiral-shaped silk webs that she shoots out of her mouth. It’s sticky, so she would always complain about the taste and the dryness in her mouth, but she carries enough water with her at all times to counter that. The versatile use of her quirk makes it a valuable support type, though she is athletic and daring enough to use it offensively.
Her mother's side of the quirk, the neon part, is responsible for the gradient glow of her hair and any fresh silk she produces. The silk containts a faint amount of neon gas that evoparates quickly.

Sticky Spit

offensive close-range, multiple targets
spits out stream of little web bullets that expand when they hit an obstacle. They are meant to blindfold or stop villains, but they can’t fly very far, so a lot of them simply hit the ground for her victims to step in and get stuck for a moment

Trap Webs

defensive/supportive close-range, AOE
creates intricate and artistic spiral webs that she can then move around with her spider legs without destroying them. They’re perfect for catching villains

Net Armor

defensive close-range, guard
forms a thin layer of webs in a scaly pattern out of her sweat for a quick and light protection of her body. It doesn’t withstand much, but it still helps

Strengths

  • Her hands, feet and spider legs stick to all kinds of surfaces, making climbing and moving about a breeze
  • Her sticky web also sticks to anything at her will, so any clothes she makes out of it can be used in a lot of ways
  • Her agility, jumping power and fast reflexes enable her to move around quickly and flexibly dodge attacks

Limitations

  • Dehydration is a big problem for her, since creating webs takes up a lot of her body’s liquid. She’ll feel it when her throat gets parched or her lips get cracked and she’ll quickly feel lightheaded afterwards. She also won’t be able to produce silk anymore when she reaches the limit
  • She is extremely sensitive to changes in temperature, heat will make her feel nauseous and it’ll easily burn her skin, but the cold will slow down her reaction and movements, too
  • Her frail body type and light weight does not support her aggressive fighting style at all and hard hits can easily injure her. She is working to build up more muscle, but her spider physiology is working against her
  • Her spitting power is not great enough to shoot her webs very far for ranged attacks, though their sticky nature can still render opponents immobile as soon as they come closer
  • Empty battlefields are her absolute weakness. With no place to hide or hangle off from, she can’t rely on her evasive abilities

Hero equipment

WPejHty.png?width=379&height=662

Her costume is elastic and stable and made to withstand temperatures. It is designed to repel the silky material of her sticky webs, so she doesn’t get stuck in it while still looking stylish. Her belt holds pouches with several bottles of water and quirk enhancing pills. She likes drawing attention and thus chose the design based on peacock spiders, and her glowing hair ruins all chances of camouflaging anyway.

She implements several changes to her hero costume, most of them happen between her second and third year. As a part of the surface gets webbed with her silk, it can repel and attract itself at her will. Her belt gets exchanged for the jacket she uses for her winter costume which has enough pouches to accommodate for everything she needs. All the white parts are made out of her silk, so she can easily pull them off and use them and replace them afterwards. Since it sticks to anything, she also uses it on her shoes, so she can hang from all kinds of surfaces.

Trivia

msybO1y.png
  • Her eyes are sensitive to light which is why she often covers the majority of them. She can see very well in dim light though, so her costume includes photochromic lenses to ensure perfect vision at any time
  • She is obsessed with hero merch and especially proud of her prized limited All Might figurine
  • She is interested in biology and likes to study up on it
  • Her favorite kind of flowers are Caladenia X spectabilis, a special breed of spider orchids. They are also her character flowers
  • She also likes to read ghost stories or stories about youkai
  • She is a morning bird and never has any difficulties getting out of bed in the morning
  • She has an insatiable sweet tooth, but likes to tone down her cravings with bubblegum
  • Ran dislikes cooking for and by herself, and usually keeps it to a minimum by eating out. Her food does, however, taste pretty decent when she puts her all into it
  • She likes to stay in contact and text with others, but when her hands are busy at the exact moment she reads a message, she just mentally replies and then forgets about it
  • She used to envy Nejire a little for her long hair, since she can't really have long hair as it would always get tangled up in her sticky web
  • A few of her clothes have makeshift holes to accommodate for her spider legs, but she also likes to buy backless shirts or dresses to avoid ruining them
  • The color intensity of her hair and eyes varies depending on her mood due to her mother’s neon quirk genes
  • She’s afraid she has stopped growing and won’t be able to reach 170 cm
  • She is so bad with her finances. Like, seriously so bad. How does she even survive
  • She enjoys being pampered like a baby. And hugs, she loves those, too
  • She prefers to be addressed without any honorifics. Just Ran or Ito

TamaRan Headcanons

  • When Tamaki is facing a wall unable to deal with his surroundings, Ran likes to slide in elegantly between it and him. She would then place her hands on his cheeks and hold his face in place to look at her. Initially, it would get worse and get him really worked up, but with time, her voice and touch would calm him down.
  • Sometimes she would just stay there between him and the wall and gently pet his head while whispering words of encouragement.
  • She would also put her hand on his forehead if the situation allowed or her finger under his chin to direct his eyes up or towards her. Or she would simply hold his hands when they are shaking. It seems more effective than just telling him to look up and that nobody is out to hurt him.
  • Ran is generally very touchy-feely, much to Tamaki's dismay. She would always make him jump when she surprised him with a hug or when she suddenly took his hand, but he would soon miss the feeling when she wasn't there.
  • Ran doesn't see Tamaki battle seriously very often, because his nerves usually make him falter, but in the few situations where his mind is only on a battle, she can only watch in awe. His potential is one of the major reasons she tries to give him confidence and encourages him at all times.
  • Tamaki likes to watch Ran when she isn't looking. When they're on a date and she's excitedly running ahead, when they're studying and she's concentrating or when she's fighting earnestly. Her presence is glowing, and he feels like the moth attracted to the light.
  • Ran is a huge tease, she likes getting all kinds of expressions out of Tamaki and then has to hold back her laugh when he reacts as she expects.
  • Tamaki and Ran start going on “dates” more often in their third year, though they won’t actually call them that. It happens naturally with Ran taking Tamaki to events initially, then amusement parks, movies, dances. Tamaki has some difficulties to invite her back at first, but eventually manages to ask her to walk with him or go to a cafe with him after school. He prefers spending domestic time with her without a lot of people around, but he still never denies her date ideas.
  • They are both quite overprotective of each other. When Tamaki sees Ran being hit on by other guys, he would only hesitate for a bit before rushing in and pulling Ran out of the situation. He'd be mortified later when Ran laughs and tells him she could've handled that, but he'd feel better as she reassures him that she appreciates his efforts. Ran shows her worrying whenever she knows that Tamaki is on his own, that is in a battle or a similar situation without Mirio or herself by his side. She doesn't want to worry, really, knowing that he could probably handle it, but she can't help it and tries to meddle whenever possible.
  • It doesn’t happen very often, but when Ran does have a bad day, Tamaki will be at her door with blankets, food and a listening ear. While she is usually the one who has to calm him down in other situations, he is actually way better at it and knows what to say or do to bring a smile on her face again.
  • Ran dislikes cooking for herself, but loves food. She would usually try to cook as little as possible, but Tamaki and his quirk encourage her to cook more for him and for herself, because she loves seeing him try out new things.
  • Once Tamaki got used to spending time with Ran, he would bring snacks for their lunch breaks knowing that she loves them.
  • She also loves hearing his animal trivia talk, because he is always so eager to share facts with her, especially about his quirk.
  • Ran is quick to compliment Tamaki, she will do it at every opportunity. But when he directs one at her in a rare moment, she would look so surprised and smile at him so brightly that he wishes he had the courage to compliment her more often.
  • Tamaki can actually not handle Ran at all times. Even further down in their relationship there would be days when she was too much for him, but it is difficult for him to express that. Luckily, she will have learnt to read him good enough to know when to back down and leave him alone. She would tell him that he could come to her whenever he wanted and, having played it off, would go back to her room, but these moments would be hard on her as well. Just the thought that Tamaki might start to hate her one day fills her with dread and she’d be unable to talk anyone else, making her feel more alone than ever even with her plethora of friends. She will have to be reassured that it is not actually her that Tamaki can’t handle to bounce back to her usual self.

Story

Childhood

Ran grew up in a family of heroes and her biggest role models have always been her parents as well as the top heroes Endeavor and All Might. Her parents are super doting and try to spoil their only daughter whenever possible. Even though they’re both busy heroes, at least one of them used to be at home every evening when she came home from middle school to prepare dinner. That’s why Ran is not used to living alone, so she feels a little lonely at the U.A. dorm sometimes and seeks out company whenever possible. Since she has never needed to be too careful with money, she doesn’t know how to organize her finances and now she’s already low on allowance midway through the month. Her parents know, when she stops calling them at that time and they also know that she does it, so they won’t hear about her struggles and let her become more self-sufficient on her own. They respect her decision and even though they would love to just send her the money she needs, they hook her up with part-time jobs instead.

Like most people, Ran’s quirk developed as a child. While her mother’s neon quirk manifested mostly in the glow of her hair, eyes, sweat and other body liquids including her silk, her father’s mutation genes resulted in her manifesting all her spider-like features. The children her age were either fascinated or repulsed by her quirk, but Ran never cared much either way. She wasn’t easily impressed or offended and whoever tried to bully her and said that her web spitting was disgusting or that spiders were too dark to be heroes, quickly found themselves forced to think otherwise.

1st year High School

It was no question for Ran that she would go to U.A. even though her parents insisted that she didn’t have to follow in their footsteps. But they knew too well that she wanted nothing more than being a hero and they proudly helped her train for it. After middle school, Ran entered U.A. where most of her friends ended up in a different class than her. She still made friends quickly with a lot of her classmates and soon knew almost all of the students in her grade. Unfortunately, her class developed to the one with the worst reputation with only her and two others holding it together. The tension in class would result in aggressions and conflicts, and Ran would be between all fronts. She would try to mediate and smooth things out, but it is only way later that she realized that her meddling with the parties was only exhausting her, so she completely pulled out around the end of the school year. Without someone to put a damper on them, the fights escalated and eventually resulted in the whole class except for Ran and a few others being expelled. For their second year, the remaining students of her class were then split up among the other classes.

Ran would end up in class 2A (not finalized until Big 3’s class is revealed) and while she was already friends with Nejire and Mirio, it was only then that she got to know Tamaki more. At first she feared that coming from the disaster class would further her villain-y image, but she’s already made a name for herself as the sunshine girl around all classes and even among the teachers, so she didn’t need to worry.

Ran had been applying for internships since her middle school years, and while she was never officially accepted to any until U.A., she has met a few of her heroes before, so she knew exactly which hero office she wanted to apply to.

For the obligatory workplace experience at U.A. in her first year, Ran was scouted by several pro heroes, but she still applied to Endeavor’s hero office. While she was still waiting for his answer and starting to ponder about accepting one of the offers she received, she met Sir Nighteye at a hero convention. It only took him two hours of seeing her around (she was hard to miss), fangirling about All Might to take a liking to her. She let it slip that she still needed a place for her internship and he asked her if she wanted to come to his office for her training. There she was assigned to his sidekick Centipeder who, aside from fighting techniques, also taught her actions and protocols for emergencies as well mannerisms that are expected of heroes in public.

Later, she interned with Gang Orca where she learned to embrace the villainy nature of her quirk. He was also the first person to call her by her hero name Rantula. He thus allowed her to be part of his “villain” squad whenever they made an appearance for the provisional license exams at U.A.

2nd year High School

When the others from her grade started their long-term internship in the second semester of their second year, Ran was still hanging onto her dream of becoming Endeavor’s sidekick. All of her efforts were getting ignored and when she made up her mind to speak to him at a gala she went to with her parents, she was mercilessly shot down. Her speech had, however, successfully drawn the interest of Hawks who she had met a few times before, and after a week-long test starting the next day, she officially became his intern.

Future

She started working at her parents’ office just before the end of her third year. It was not issued by the school and she actually missed a bunch of classes for it, but Ran felt she would have to do it if she wanted to take the hero business seriously. She never wanted to simply be given something which is why it took her this long to make use of the connection she already had.

Amajiki Tamaki

[ "Amajiki-kun" later "Tamaki-kun" ]

Tamaki is the last of the Big 3 that Ran befriends, though he’s heard stories of the “spider girl” way before that. Ran’s presence is strong even among his class that is a couple doors from hers, and he’s sure he’s seen the girl in question hang around with Mirio sometime.

When Ran switches classes at the beginning of their second year, she replaces the former seat 7, the seat in front of him. At first, it's only little notes she hands him to pass along, then she turns around to chat regularly or hugs him when she sees him, and it's overwhelming even though he’s known her for a while now. With the new dorm rooms in their third year, she’s now around him throughout the majority of the day and it seems like he can never get used to Ran’s antics and her not knowing the concept of personal space, but with time, he actually does. They fight alongside and against each other a few times, he learns of her softer and quieter side, her love for flowers, her fears and wishes. He learns to enjoy her presence, to feel at ease when she is around and to have confidence in himself and in her. In turn, she learns to be comforting, to be more empathetic and to seek Tamaki out in a crowd, because he is all she can think about at times.

zCNTTuN.png

Hadou Nejire

[ "Nejire" ]

Nejire is the first of the Big 3 that Ran gets close to. As first years, the Big 3 don’t have their reputation yet, but Ran notices Nejire in the hallway on their first day at U.A. and immediately compliments her on her long and smooth hair. The two girls click quickly and exchange phone numbers to meet up regularly and gossip or study together. Nejire is one of the few people who can match or even outclass Ran’s enthusiasm and energy, and so the two of them never have a dull moment around each other. They can, however, be an absolute obnoxious duo, too loud and too blunt, that only few people can handle being around them at the same time. When Ran switches to Nejire’s class, the two hang around each other even more and always seem to be plotting something.

3adDw7F.png

Toogata Mirio

[ "Toogata-kun" ]

As Nejire’s friend, Ran has her first chat with Mirio and Tamaki soon enough. While Ran considers Nejire her best friend, she gets along best with Mirio, since he is always up for funny pranks or little surprises for their friends. Their friendship is not all fun and games though, Ran and Mirio would compete with each other and try to score better grades than the other. She has a slight edge over him all throughout their first and second year, but Mirio would surpass her not only in physical strength, but also in quirk use and power later. She doesn’t acknowledge her feelings about this at first, but realizes later that she is frustrated about her slower progress. It is the main reason why she turns to her parents and asks to work under them after her internship at Hawks’.

Before that could happen, Mirio lost his quirk, and while that didn’t cause Ran to lose her drive, she would feel guilty about being able to train while he couldn’t.

Hoshimi Aru

[ "Hoshimi-kun" ]

Aru and Ran fight in his provisional hero license exam in September of her third year and his second year. She fully outmaneuvers him as the villain and binds him to the ground with her spider net. This barely gives him enough time to show any of his abilities, but as he heats up his body to melt the silk of her net, he can watch her movements in awe which might or might not have been the start of his little puppy crush on her.

uc82teD.png

Kirishima Eijirou

[ "Kirishima-kun" ]

Ran meets Eijirou before his and Tamaki’s internship with Fatgum. She was worried if Tamaki could handle the internship since he had had some difficulties with his last one, but seeing as Eijirou was such a bright and gentle character, she was confident that there would be no problems. They kept in contact even after the internship, because Ran enjoyed chatting with him and because he started hanging around Tamaki more, too.

ppyL2Gi.png

Todoroki Enji

[ "Endeavor-san" ]

Endeavor is Ran’s absolute favorite hero. While her parents are her role models, they don’t appear in media much. All Might on the other hand seems much too present. So Endeavor’s presence as a hero seems just right to her. His quirk is flashy as well as dangerous, but his strength outshines it. She likes how he handles himself, letting others deal with the media while he just seems to do the hero work for the sake of it. With how much she collects of him, she’s caught on to a few snippets of his controverse private life, but for her, it doesn’t change how she sees and admires him as a hero.

Her parents are not exactly friends with Endeavor, but they have been supporting each other and going to each others’ events, so Ran has met him a few times.

NfvLPm8.png

Todoroki Shouto

[ "Todoroki-kun" ]

As soon as Ran found out that one of Endeavor's sons was her underclassman, she sought him out to chat with him. She still hadn’t given up her dream of becoming Endeavor’s sidekick, but the main reason why she ended up seeing Shouto more often is that she later became friends with Midoriya Izuku.

bKbI1Iv.png

Sir Nighteye

[ "Sir Nighteye-san" ]

Ran barely got to see Sir Nighteye during her short internship at his office, but the episode at the hero convention where she met him will always be a fond memory of hers.

I'll get to this eventually.
Exr65xI.png

Sakamoto Kugo

[ "Gang Orca-san" ]

Ran met Gang Orca before her internship with him on one of her merch trips where she happened to wear a keychain of him. As he is one of her mutant hero idols, she asks for an autograph, and when he noticed her enthusiasm, he kindly took the time to chat with her. He didn’t ask for her full name, so he is genuinely surprised when he sees her internship application and finds out she’s the daughter of Shooto whom he had been working with before. He accepts her, and with him, she learns to embrace the villainy nature of her quirk, to nurture and to expand on it. He is the first to call her by her hero name Rantula that she had chosen for herself just a few weeks prior. At the end of her internship where Ran has proven to be a reliable intern, he offers her to be a part of his villain squad at the next provisional license exams.

Hawks

[ "Hawks-san" ]

Since Ran didn’t turn to her parents for help until she almost graduated, Hawks took on the major role as her mentor during her time at school.

Kido Mirai

[ "Mirai-chan" sometimes "Gamma" ]

Ran regularly hangs around at the campus café where she meets a variety of people. Among them, she has made the acquaintance of another cat lover whom she later found out was her underclassman Shinsou Hitoshi. As she chats with him, she is immediately intrigued by his quirk and then even more so when he suddenly starts appearing with a girl from another school.

She is eager to get to know the girl, so it doesn’t take a long time until she tries to talk to her the next time she sees them in the café. The girl, Mirai, feels shy and taken aback by Ran’s enthusiasm, but Shinsou tells her that there is nothing to fear and leaves them alone to chat. With Ran leading the conversation, the girls get along right away. Getting used to Ran’s personality is a challenge for Mirai, but she gradually warms up to her as they both stay in contact. Even the difference in age is not a problem, because Ran is enthusiastic about showering the girl with advice and support. As time passes, she is rewarded with Mirai opening up to her, and they meet more often to hang out and train together.
