Basics

Claire is the only daughter in the Botan Family, a family of proud witches. Her mothers were secretive due to common witch hysteria, but they did practice spell making and potion crafting for a select few supernaturals in their community. However, Claire's parents were-- and still are-- clumsy, teased, and not respected as a witch hsitorically should be. Claire has therefore vowed to pick up the slack and become the best witch that she can be, so as to renew faith and pride in her family's name.

However, Claire does not pursue this goal through entirely pure hearted means. She is a sneaky girl who uses magic to help herself. Her magical perfumes make her classmates like her, she literally has a magic touch as a nurse's aid, and Claire pushes herself incredibly hard to be the most physically fit, mentally strong, and attractive girl in her class. She is obsessed with being perfect and tries to deny any accusations-- usually internal, honestly-- that might lead her to believe she is not what she wants to be: An ideal witch and honorable member of the magical community.

Personality

Claire is her own worst enemy. She sets high standards for herself, struggles to meet them, and then beats herself up over them. When she is meeting her own standards, she is also exhausting herself and left too tired to enjoy them.

However, being the "top" and the "best" is something that Claire truly does want for herself. This is largely due to a concept in her home world called "World Heritages." For mortals, a World Heritage Treasure is a place that everyone flocks to and protects, because it showcases part of the past that humanity shouldn't forget. But for the world of Immortals and Magic, a World Heritage can be a person. Claire wants to be one such treasure to the world.

So she pushes herself exceptionally hard. Claire tells herself that the mortal suffering she endures now will be worth it once the entire world appreciates her. She is someone who is willing to make sacrifices in the present to enjoy her future. So she smiles and laughs and endures every hardship thrown her way, all in a quest to better herself.

Claire acts like a goody-two-shoes. She acts like she is happy to bend over backwards for people. She acts kind hearted and naive, and pretends to be "pure" and "innocent." But it's all an act. Claire realizes this, and it frustrates her. She wants to be the kind of person she imagines as "pure and good," and cries over her sinful human qualities. However, you'll never catch Claire crying. She doesn't want to taint herself with tears or anger, thinking that is a sin.

Even with these concerns about being impure, Claire is full of impure thoughts. She is a scheming girl and accidentally manipulative. Life is a chess game and she sometimes treats others like her pawns. When she catches herself thinking this way she gets very frustrated, especially when it often gets her more results than being a goody-two-shoes. Claire is a huge bundle of conflict, and it's all bubbling to a boil.

History

Claire was born to a pair of witches, though neither of her parents were particularly skilled at the art of magic. They were clumsy and mocked, and not trusted by anyone in the supernatural community to do anything. Historically, witches would have been cornerstones in society for their medicines and potions... But for Claire's parents, they were teased that their medicines and poisons were a greater risk than they carried reward.

However, her parents never gave up. They taught Claire magic and alchemy in a positive light. They fulfilled every request for a spell or potion to the best of their abilities, and though they only heard back for negative comments, they truly worked hard. They really loved helping people.

But Claire didn't love it at all. She hated seeing how no one appreciated her family. They had been serving EverWood for generations, but no one thanked them for it! Her family pride gradually got to her and led Claire to want to make her family valuable. She wanted to do something that would make everyone love her family and appreciate them, like they deserved to be.

So she began studying an alchemic concept called a Philosopher's Stone. In magic, there was a way to turn your soul into a Philosopher's Stone by going through the Alchemic Process. Claire began studying a way to make her own soul this immortal treasure. With it, she would be able to heal any illness and would truly be valuable to society-- to the world!

To do this, your soul needed to be "purified." This meant Claire had to try to purify herself. She didn't understand the concept entirely. She figured that all she needed to do was act pure and then the process would work. Claire developed a pure-hearted and kind persona and tried to trick herself into truly being that person, and getting the soul she needed.

Claire was also working very hard with her magic spells and potions. She began rebuilding her family's reputation as she conquered more and more complicated recipes and helped the community. The Botan family was gaining some appreciation and Claire wanted more and more.

Then, one day, a new family of witches moved into EverWood. The Croft Family: A single mother and her young daughter. Within no time, the Croft Family was everyone's go-to for spells and potions. Mrs Croft was an excellent witch who moved in and was immediately trusted with tons of family responsibilities. And her daughter, who didn't even know about magic yet, but doted on and beloved by the townspeople. People stopped coming to the Botan Family for help, because Mrs Croft was so much better.

Claire's parents were thrilled. They were truly happy to have a new witch in the community and longed to learn from Mrs Croft. They started planning outings together and bettering their talent pool together... but Claire hated it. And she hated how her parents, who had been working so hard for so long, could get shoved aside and replaced... and they didn't even notice!

So she hatched a plan... A plan to set the Croft family in their place, and earn back the respect her family had worked so hard to earn.
