Isla Nadenka Vavilov

I'll always be Isla, but I don't want a lot of people to know who Isla is and what Isla feels all the time

Blunt. Sarcastic. Reckless.

Character

At first, Isla seems like a shy and studious student, but Isla will debunk most peoples' expectations rather quickly. Generally, Isla attempts not to speak to others unless given the opportunity though because she doesn't feel the need to. However, when she feels a necessity to pipe up, Isla won't hesitate to throw her opinion out. Many people find Isla has a very brash manner of presenting herself, and when accompanied by her endless sarcasm, it can turn people off from her. She usually knows when people are uncomfortable with her, but she can't bring herself to care because she doesn't want people who can't handle the way she speaks. Isla isn't always sarcastic, but since it's her general tone of voice, people often have a bad impression of her. She notably has a potty mouth.

Despite her harsh way of speaking and stuff she says to other people, Isla holds a high respect for most peoples' opinions and feelings regarding what she says. Even though she is a person who strongly believes in respecting people because they earn it and not because they're higher in rank than her, she still believes in respecting an individual's feelings and opinions.

Although Isla tries not to be mean, her bluntness can come across as rude, so people intrepret it as Isla being unpleasant. She isn't as nasty as many people think though. Despite her teasing nature regarding other people, she can be quite a compassionate individual. When someone looks past her frank and sardonic nature, Isla can be a kind person. Her blunt nature is not only for expressing her annoyance, but also to keep the people around her safe.

When Isla becomes friends with someone, her passionate loyalty and concern shines the brightest. It sounds cheesy, but Isla has an eternal loyalty for her friends and the people she cares about. Often times, if someone slanders them or does anything to harm them, Isla won't think twice about fighting against them. People call her reckless for this trait of hers, but it never stops her. Isla is naturally aggressive, so when she finds something to fight for, she will go all the way. She frequently finds herself sparring with other people when they bother her to the point sarcastic comments won't satisfy her anger anymore.

One thing many people don't know about Isla is her emotional sensitivity. She has a trustworthy intuition, and she can often guess how someone feels because of small changes in their presence and behavior. She often uses it to benefit her relationships with others (such as displaying concern for someone she isn't as close with) but her attempt to cater to other peoples' needs also comes from good intentions. Isla can be quite empathatic and motherly when presented an opportunity, but she generally doesn't show this side of her unless she finds it necessary. Despite her ability to help others, Isla often will not reach out for help regarding her own emotional problems. She doesn't like being vulnerable with people, hence why she represses her more tender side. Isla doesn't like being emotional with most people, so she tends to just brush off most of her intense emotions. This comes back to bite her when her developing anxiety starts becoming full-blown, but she is incredibly stubborn and won't admit she's struggling.

Isla is notably ambitious whatever she is doing, especially regarding school and her hobbies. She wants to be amazing in her areas of interest, causing her to do endless amounts of research and study to get where she wants to be. As of the current canon, Isla's main goal is to become an Obliviator, so she's done a lot of studying to put herself on the path to become one. Isla knows she can be good at anything if she puts herself to it, hence why she has become amazing at baking.

Baking

Strength:

Throughout Isla's life, she has always had an affinity to sweet treats (particularly brownies and peanut butter bars) so she took up baking when she was around eight years old. Although she can make meals when she bakes, she tends to only make pasteries. On the other hand, she has atrocious cooking skills when it comes to cooking with a stove.

Defense Against the Dark Arts

Strength:

Ever since she came to Hogwarts, Isla has been drawn to DADA (something she inherited from her father). She tends to neglect her other classes to jump ahead in DADA, which leads to her demise in third year when she decides to learn the Patronus Charm. She is a notably skilled duelist and caster (and has started learning nonverbal with some spells she tends to exceed in), hence why she enjoys the subject so much.

British Sign Language [BSL]

Strength:

The main reason Isla knows BSL is because of her deaf younger sister, Marina Estrelle. She is fairly caught up with all of the modern slang, however it takes a lot of effort for her to speak and translate at a rapid pace.

Story

Before Hogwarts

Isla is a product of a one night stand between Lissandra Kallaste and Yegor Vavilov, so she grew up believing Lissandra's current boyfriend was her father while she thought of Yegor as a cool uncle figure. The first few years of Isla's life were calm. She spent a lot of time with both her parents without knowing Yegor was her father. When Isla was two, her younger sister Marina was born. Ever since Isla was a child, she was overprotective of her younger sister and would spend a lot of time with her. Life changed when she was around three years old because Lissandra was invited to perform in the United States for a few years (because she was a dancer), so Isla moved to Upstate New York. During her time in New York, Isla became friends with the wrong kinds of people. She certainly had the potential to be a star student, but due to the influence of her older brother, Isla became more of a delinquent than an honors student. She was constantly getting into fights and snapping at classmates who annoyed her which turned a lot of people off from her. Isla's aggressive behavior continued until she was seven years old. The Estrelle family was planning to move back to London by January the following year, but all of the plans changed when Lissandra, Isla's step-father, and Marina were involved in a hit and run car accident. Someone who was under the influence rammed into the back of their car before driving off (they were eventually caught though). Lissandra and her boyfriend were overall okay albeit a few minor injuries, but Marina hit her head and suffered from brain trauma and several broken ribs.

The accident was a reality check for Isla, especially because after Marina woke up from a medically induced coma, it was discovered she had lost most of her hearing and became deaf. Once Marina's ribs had recovered and she had the all-clear to head back to Britain, the Estrelle family moved back to Britain. Isla spent a good chunk of her time trying to be a good influence for Marina and trying to help her adjust to being deaf, but since Isla was only eight, there wasn't much she could do other than learn BSL with her and play with her. Marina needed a lot of extra attention from Isla's parents, but Isla couldn't understand why Lissandra and her step-father would never spend time with her anymore. She felt lonely, which caused Isla's aggressive behavior to make a comeback. Isla began to misbehave as a way to gather attention from adults. She began fighting her classmates, cussing, and lashing out at adults in her life while simultaneously hoping she would get praise for her good grades. When she was shunned for her horrible behavior, Isla couldn't understand it and became bitter over it. Never once did Isla hate Marina or treat her badly, but she knew she was jealous and that she was wrong for feeling that way. Isla's parents began sending her to her aunt (Arina)'s house and Yegor's house more often in an attempt to balance out the lack of time they were spending with her. Yegor tried to teach Isla how to ignore people and how to behave herself, but nothing was helping. Around the middle of year 5 (fourth grade), Isla had an incident with a classmate that brought her parents to the breaking point. They couldn't handle her anymore while simultaneously trying to get Marina back on her feet, so they sent her to permanently live with Yegor or her aunt (depending on their work schedules) which put a giant strain on Isla's relationship with her parents. She currently lives with her father in Bermondsey in the Southwark Bourough.

Before Isla began attending Hogwarts, Yegor and Arina spent a lot of time with her to try and fix her behavior. They went out of their way to take Isla out, provide her with all of her favorite foods, and spent one on one time helping her with her homework. They also began teaching Isla about patience and explaining why her behavior was unacceptable. Initially, Isla didn't want to listen, but eventually she turned around for the better. Although she still had a bit of a temper, Isla learned a bit about how to control herself and her behavior. Year 6 was a smooth ride for Isla. She maintained good grades and didn't get in trouble with any of her teachers, which was a personal record for her. Before she even knew it, she had received her letter for Hogwarts. In the current canon, she is doing quite well. Isla has become friends with many people and has learned to control her temper (most of the time).

Roz Claesson

Scapegrace, Crush

When they're young, Isla views Roz as her midget best friend. She is quite fond of teasing him, but it's her way of showing her care for him. She often teases him for his height and the fact he can't climb trees. But despite her constant teasing, there's a lot of affection she won't show people. Isla has a strong admiration for Roz's intelligence and his ability to keep his pride in check. But since Isla can be a bit of a tsundere, she wouldn't tell him that unless he needed to hear it. She is also notably over-protective of him, and she would defend him verbally and physically without hesitation. Isla is convinced Roz is an amazing person, and no one can tell her otherwise. She also notably has a deep appreciation for him for not only being her best friend but also for allowing her to stay at his place during the breaks. Isla feels safer and calmer when he's around, so she's naturally drawn to spending more time with him. She loves getting to do stuff with him that he's never done before (such as letting him climb trees, wear high heels, etc.) and also taking the opportunity to learn from him as well. Isla is also marveled by his cooking skills, and she adores his style. She will often find herself complaining she's hungry to him just so he'll make something for her to munch on.

Isaac E. Hiltshire

Scapegrace

At first, Isla thought Isaac would be one of those obnoxious kids she wouldn't become close to, but he managed to prove her wrong. Considering Isla can be a bit of a realistic pessimist, she appreciates Isaac's consistent optimism. She admires Isaac's passion for Quidditch but won't find herself interested in Quidditch until around her fifth year, however she is still one of his big supporters and even got her younger sister to hype him up. Isla is also happy she has someone else to gawk about comics with, and she believes Isaac has good taste in them. Isla is grateful to Isaac for being her homie, and even though she will occasionally call him an idiot, she believes he's intelligent. Isla holds a strong trust in Isaac, and she will often tell him things she can't tell Roz (especially as they get older). She feels graced by his positive presence, and she hopes to develop a deeper friendship with him when they're ready for it. Isla admires Isaac a lot and strives to be a more positive person like him. She is incredibly grateful for him and believes that they will be friends in the long run. Isaac also sparked Isla's inspiration to venture into cursed food, which may or may not be a good thing.

Tristen White

ddib8ja-bfd5eee6-20f3-41b8-a833-5b95b847

Scapegrace

Within the Scapegraces, Isla views Tristen as a brother figure who she trusts with emotions she doesn't want Isaac or Roz to know about. Although they aren't talking as frequently as they do with the other Scapegraces, Isla trusts him with her more vulnerable emotions. She also enjoys his sense of humor and believes he's one of the funniest people she's met. Currently, Isla can't convey how grateful she is to Tristen for taking Marina as his mentor. She thinks Tristen is an incredibly kind and selfless person, not to mention he's easy for her to talk to. Isla hopes to get to know him more as they get older and to hopefully play a similar role for him that he's played for her. Also, she still wants to learn how to make Cauldron cakes for him. It's a big work in progress for her, but it'll happen someday.
