"Hey, can anybody lend me a hand? Misplaced mine, again."

Evander Halley is a spaceship captain, whose first major command took a violent and explode-y end, when a shuttle that was supposed to bring him back to his ship collided with an automated transport and went up in flames. He was rescued, brought back from the dead by means of super-advanced cybernetic implants, and given a choice by his commanders: Take command of a highly experimental new spaceship able to directly interface with his new implants, or never go to space in any official capacity again. He accepted immediately.

Captain Halley is a kind and fatherly person, if a little goofy. Think "summer camp supervisor". He even has a parlor guitar he takes everywhere, and writes endearingly dorky songs about his crew's space adventures as a hobby - though the whole "literally died" thing put a bit of a damper on his generally sunny disposition.

Details

Evander is of average height, relatively slim, and vaguely athletic if he can be arsed to work out. He's somewhat tan, though his little rendezvous with death left him with a slightly ashen complexion.

His hair is black and very wavy; some strands near the front turned white after he was brought back from the dead - which is the only good thing about that mess, in his opinion, because he thinks he looks more mysterious that way.

Evander has very pale blue eyes - and those are not a result of dying, that's just funky genetics. He's aware that they stand out a lot, and always liked that about himself. These days, his left eye is actually a highly advanced prosthetic that can do a lot of fancy stuff, but that isn't outwardly visible.

Speaking of highly advanced prosthetics: His entire left arm is also a cybernetic replacement, as are various bits and pieces all across his body, including a solid chunk of his nervous system and several bones. The most notable exposed bit is his left cheek, the aforementioned arm, and a whole bunch of glowing indicator lights.

Evander tends to cover up the glowy bits and his arm whenever possible, and steadfastly ignores his obviously not biological cheek, though he's definitely not above using the fact that he can take off pieces of his cybernetic arm for terrible puns - at this point, the most common reaction to somebody saying "Let me lend you a hand" on the Oscura is "NO, DO NOT. PLEASE."

Evander is pretty much every crewmember's honorary dad, including all the goofiness and bad puns and mildly embarrassing shenanigans you can imagine. He's the kind of person you'd expect to pull out a campfire and a guitar at any moment - and you probably wouldn't be wrong about the guitar.

Despite all of that, he's usually a competent leader, though not always perfectly by-the-book - in fact, he tends to have rather heated arguments with his first officer about the spirit versus the letter of the law, and he's rather willing to bend the rules to do good. His strengths are street smarts and improvising more than formal education (which he's had but never got along with terribly well) and careful planning - and he almost always makes it work out perfectly, but if it does not work out, the results are usually disastrous.

Evander is a fan of teamwork and open discussion, and a charming, cheery, optimistic person, though he's always had his flaws of course, and literally being dead for a day or so before being brought back with deeply invasive medical procedures he never asked for didn't really help matters: He's actually quite needy, craves validation, is wildly insecure about his physical appearance now that he's glowing in weird places, gained a debilitating fear of failure when his ship was destroyed along with a crushing sense of guilt and self-doubt, and can be horribly insensitive in his well-meaning way. Case in point, he's only now starting to realize that his "amicable" breakup broke his former boyfriend's heart enough to leave permanent emotional scars, a solid ten years after the fact.

Evander had a pretty uneventful childhood on earth. Two loving parents, one sibling he occasionally even got along with. After going on a space cruise with his family when he was six, he was so impressed he decided he'd become a cruise captain. When he was eleven, he decided that being a cruise captain wasn't glamorous enough. When he was thirteen, he stumbled across an information pamphlet for the INSA - the INternational Space Agency - and decided that their non-military branches were exactly what he'd been looking for. When he was eighteen, he enrolled at their academy.

Evander eventually became an officer and spent a few years being sent here and there, before ending up stationed on an entirely different planet - a far-off, but strategically important Earth colony. He spent most of his service as a Lieutenant Commander and later on a full Commander, captaining ships too small and unimportant to be staffed by an actual, ranking Captain. Then he was finally, FINALLY promoted... and promptly died the day after, before being brought back and given command of the Oscura under weird circumstances.

  • TRIVIA
  • 100% Adoration Rating: Granted, his crew was hand-picket to invoke this trope, but it worked.
  • The Captain: Obviously, though he rather comes across like a mixture of "wise village elder" and "camp counselor" instead. A bit fatherly, a bit silly, a bit larger-than-life. Actually a lot larger-than-life, which is probably why his leadership strategy actually works.
  • Mildly Military: The entire setting, but he's the most egregious example. Partially because they are, in fact, not military, and partially because nobody's ever told him he can't run a ship like that. Of course, they DO end up as space outlaws...
  • The Chains Of Commanding: He may appear laid-back and chill, but that's merely a slightly different spin on the usual "steadfast, unwavering captain"-shtick - he can sit amidst his crew and make cheesy music and be generally amicable, but he still can't show weakness to anyone.
  • Bunny Ears Lawyer: Has his moments, and it's not always clear what's this trope and what's him just being a troll deliberately.
  • Captain Smooth and Sergeant Rough: Him and Cmdr. Valente - though rarely too rough unless somebody really fucks up.
  • Risking The King: Tends to get himself into danger a lot - mostly because he has fancy implants that allow him to accomplish stuff nobody else on board can.
  • Neutral Good: Chaotic Good by nature, Lawful Good by occupation, flexible enough to find a compromise. Until he's not, but I digress.
  • The Leader: Well, obviously, but he's always had a tendency to end up as this, no matter where he stands in the chain of command (if there even is one) because he tends to project a kind of easy, laid-back authority and is a pillar of strength in whatever mayhem may be occurring.
  • Benevolent Boss: Charming, usually good with people, and genuinely kind and selfless.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: That much should be obvious by now.
  • A Father To His Men: Yeah. That's Evie in a nutshell, pretty much.
  • The Men First: Especially after his last ship blew up in a way he could've prevented - he is not going to lose another crewmate, no matter what, and everybody will be protected, comfortable and cared for.
  • You Are In Command Now: How he became Captain - he didn't expect the whole "Acting Captain" thing to stick, but stick it did - they crew would've revolted if it hadn't, anyway.
  • Bold Explorer: Spent most of his adult life exploring vast reaches of space suddenly opened up by technological advancement, and mapping planets - occasionally rather dangerous ones. These space adventurers tend to have a rather alluring reputation anyway, and he is the quintessential debonair, dashing, heroic explorer.
  • Overranked Soldier: Not technically military, but still: He's damnably young for a Captain. Ended up at that rank after a field promotion unexpectedly stuck after some truly outstanding heroics. Doesn't quite hold the record as the youngest one in his neck of the woods, but he does come pretty close.
  • Danger Deadpan: More "danger friendly calm", but you get the idea.
  • In Touch With His Feminine Side: A lot less surprising in his day and age, but still. Gentle, fond of pastels, enjoys all things soft and friendly.
  • Pretty Boy: Something between "the hot member of a boy band", "1940's movie star" and "that one really popular guy in high school".
  • Brilliant But Lazy: Used to be this while at the Academy. Well, kind of. More like "Brilliant but also has ADHD and zones out until kept actually busy", but the outward effect is quite similar. Luckily, one of the higher-ups figured it out and decided that, if he wanted action, they'd give him action. It worked.
  • Artificial Limbs: An arm and part of a leg, among other assorted body parts. They are fancy and don't get in the way much, though they have some decisive drawbacks.
  • Artificial Limbs Are Stronger: Thanks to cutting-edge cybernetics. He'd prefer having his old limbs back, though.
  • Cybernetics Eat Your Soul: Averted, unless somebody deliberately tries to invoke it by fucking with his implants.
  • Cyborg: Technically. He wouldn't take too kindly to being called one, though.
  • Swiss Army Appendage: Most of his prosthetics are designed to hotswap, and he has several sets of fingers, palms, arms, feets and calves depending on what he expects to be doing that day. He also has a peculiar talent for always choosing the wrong one.
  • Hand Blast: One of his optional index fingers can do this, but it's both impractical and really uncomfortable to use.
  • Armed Legs: Has optional add-ons that include weaponized feet. Doesn't really have the balance to pull it off and considers the whole thing rather ridiculous.
  • Blade Below The Shoulder: As per usual: there's an add-on for that
  • Electronic Eyes: His left one; visually identical to his biological eye. Can zoom, has an infrared mode, and can take photos and upload them to the ship. One of the few prosthetics he has that are not supposed to detach.
  • Wolverine ClawsThere is an add-on for that.
  • Power Palm: There are, in fact, several different add-ons for that.
  • Unbreakable Bones: A few of them were surgically enhanced to help support the cybernetics and their various abilities, but not all of them are.
  • Nanomachines: Parts of his cybernetic shenanigans work with nanites. They also glow.
  • Unwilling Roboticisation: What happened to him after his temporary death. So far, it seems non-malicious...
  • Electronic Telepathy: Can do this with the Ship AI, and theoretically with users of compatible implants, too. Unfortunately, this works both ways.
  • Easily Detachable Robot Parts: His prosthetics are mostly designed to be modular, so they're supposed to detach easily - though they occasionally end up doing so when they're not supposed to, to Evie's annoyance.
  • Helping Hands: To a very minor extent - but most of his prosthetics DO have wireless functionality, so he can move them while they're detached.
  • Plug 'n' Play Prosthetics: Initially subverted, as rehab really sucked for Evie and took a fair amount of time even with Super Futuristic Medicine, but now that the base things are in place, he can swap out parts easily enough. As mentioned, they're designed with that in mind.
  • Facial Markings: A touch of exposed cybernetics, and his trademark glowy bits. Largely for cultural reasons; unfortunately not his culture.
  • Tron Lines: Have a tendency to show up in general, including on Evie. They occasionally fulfill some function, but are mostly just supposed to look nice.
  • Messy Hair: Tries his best to avert it, but tends to look (sexily, according to some crewmembers) disheveled, anyway.
  • Skunk Stripe: Even he doesn't quite know where it came from, it just... appeared after his cyborgification, most likely due to a scalp injury. He was actually asked if he'd like to have that fixed, but elected not to because he thinks it looks kinda nifty.
  • Tall, Dark and Handsome: Except he's not really all that tall, and also lacks the standard dark eyes for the trope.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: Strikingly so, matching his generally aloof looks, though they come with a warm and gentle personality.
  • What Beautiful Eyes: At least to those who don't find them vaguely unsettling.
  • Creepy Shadowed Undereyes: Post-Death.
  • Mellow Fellow: Downplayed, and much of it is a facade, but he's pretty chill nonetheless.
  • The Shepherd: His ships have always been a favored dumping grounds for newbies, because his patience with them is near-endless.
Relationships

First officer, former roommate. He's quite fond of his grumpy, stern second-in-command.
