History

Ven was born and raised on a small remotely located Cautderi colony at the edge of the Optis sector. His parents were nobody special, and thus Ven was nobody special either. They had enough to live a normal life, or as normal as life can be on a back-water colony. Every man, woman and child had to help out in some way or another, be it with menial tasks or more complicated things for those capable. Efficiency was key, and Ven was no exception. Once old enough he was sent along with children his age to carry supplies, keep store houses clean or reach those narrow places in engines and equipment that adult hands just couldn't fit.

It quickly became evident that the boy had a keen ability to pick up on anything to do with electronics and mechanics in general, and so he was set to become an apprentice engineer, working alongside his father and older sister. Ven loved it. He loved it so much, in fact, that when the other children were allowed to play he preferred to remain with the machines, losing the opportunity to form friendships with those his own age. It bothered him very little. The other children were noisy, in his opinion, and only wasted precious time he could spend learning new things.

The year Ven was turning twenty-three, the colony was attacked by a small squadron of Locarix ships, most likely a scouting party for a larger fleet. Seeing as the colony was still small and so close to the border of Cautderi territory, the enemy had no trouble annihilating the settlements, only a handful of ships managing to escape. Ven'av's entire family perished in the attack, and left with little choice the young man started working as a ship engineer, eventually finding himself on a cruiser headed for Junto Core, a human-lead military coalition between the more cooperative races in the Universe.

By this time he had gotten a taste for ships, and eager to prove he was more than some homeless dead-weight, he signed up along with the men he'd previously served alongside.

During a very ordinary, and in his opinion excruciatingly frustrating, visit to an unnamed black market satellite station to buy parts from the most infuriating man in the universe, Ven found himself facing down his second Locarix attack not on board a ship. Acting on pure instinct, the Cautderi brought the grievously wounded merchant with him, saving the man's life in the process. An action he's deeply regretted from that day forward.

It hasn't been easy, and the Cautderi has had to work twice as hard as any of the humans, but after years of dedicated work Ven has finally begun to get some recognition and he will fight tooth and nail to keep it.

Species Info

Cautderi are a humanoid race of aliens native to the Optis Sector. They live on large, technologically advanced city worlds and are a hierarchal society consisting of different castes. Castes are hereditary, meaning any children born will have the same caste as their parents. That said, if one parent is from a higher caste, the children will inherit the higher ranking caste. This makes political partnerships rampant, as only the offspring of officially united cautderi are recognised. It's also possible to be stripped of a caste completely, which means you are struck from the records and expulsed from society. Once a cautderi is casteless they are never able to reintegrate society and are forced to survive as best they can. Most casteless live short, violent lives of crime and destitution.

The Cautderi race are very sensitive to temperature and have to adjust their surroundings or inner thermostat to feel comfortable in a certain environment. Likewise, their vision can filter through the heat detection of other organisms and trace heat signatures left behind. They can focus their powers into becoming extremely hot to the touch (lighting themselves on fire), or super-heating specific areas. They also have perceive the world in infrared, or heat-vision.

Extras

• Ven is a neat-freak. Everything has its place, be it in his workspace or his private quarters.
• He has a bad habit of emitting smoke when riled up, and make him angry enough and he'll burst into flame.
• He loves learning new things and tries to get his hands on the latest tech whenever he can.
• He doesn't indulge in mind-altering substances. When you can spontaneously combust, it's not a very good idea.
• Eska owes him a life-debt. He reminds the shapeshifter of this often.
