Rycansy and her partner, Rawadwan, hold a darker secret. In Rawadwan's quest to explore more of her Selkie history, she stumbled on some tangential teachings that strayed over the line into necromantic territory. She urged Rycansy to take her to a place that eventually became known as the Bower, a spire of rock thrust to dizzying heights from the surrounding plains looking out over an uninhabited world. The pair uncovered teachings there of an eradicated cult, which led them to finding uses for Rawadwan's extra skin that went far beyond simply changing form.
It's been much longer than either will admit to, but the pair have been overseeing the growing population of the Bower. Dragons come because Rycansy has set in motion a fun-loving (and competitive) stud program, but her cheerful and caring attitude belie her true intentions. Humanoids stay because they hear rumours that the spire can help them extend their lives, potentially allowing them and their future dragon bonds a better life than other places in the Nexus. Only a very few are let in on the necromancy fueling the extended life of those who live in comfort in different parts of the Bower; the rest have built up a culture of trust and care that leaves them very loyal to the surface cause. Rycansy treats all of her chosen great-great (many times great) grandchildren with love and affection, sometimes going above and beyond to resurrect them when she feels they could use a second chance. There is enough of a smokescreen between what she says and does that only a few know these sordid details.
