Information

Personality

Sorrel is very bookish and intellectual. He loves to learn about anything and everything, though for the most part he has no practical knowledge in most subjects. His past attempts to actually use what he has learned have not always gone well, so when he feels inspired to start some kind of project, he usually persues something related to art or literature, which, unlike science or magic experiments, cannot explode. Sorrel often writes stories, plays, and speeches or creates paintings, sketches or sculptures. He feels confident about the quality of what he makes for the most part, but tends to get shy when asked to show his work to others. He's not very good with people (they can be so noisy and disruptive!) and never thinks they'll understand his vision. He can come off as egotistical and stand-offish to some, but inadvertantly making a few friends is gradually teaching him how to loosen up a bit and have some fun.

Design Notes

  • Sorrel's wings also function as hands. When he has them folded or when he's just using them like bird wings, they look like normal bird wings. But when he's holding something or gesturing or doing anything that would require hands, his feathers become more like three fingers and a thumb. It's a very handy feature. 😄
  • He has birdlike legs that are visible when he stands up taller, but if he's sitting or resting, or depending on his pose, it might look like he just has his feet stuck on his body.

Trivia

  • Sorrel lives in a nest in a tree cavity. When he makes a shrine, he plans to build it on the branch outside. He likes his home to be up high.
  • He enjoys spending time alone because it's easier to concentrate and create that way.
  • He never meant to make any friends; it just kind of happened to him.
  • He sometimes feels sad that he has no one to talk to that enjoys the same things he does. (His friends try, but it's not the same.) He hopes to meet that friend someday.

History

Ever since Sorrel became and adult and found himself a place to live, he has been working on filling that place (which happens to be a tree cavity) with anything that can bring him knowledge or help him create something new. This mostly means books and scrolls that he can pore over to find out the answers to any question he may have or to feed his imagination, as well as various tools like paintbrushes, chisels, hammers, and even needles and thread. He spends his days reading, writing, drawing, sculpting, studying, and so on. His home is full of what he feels is a comfortable clutter, but what others might just call a mess. Sorrel hates being disturbed when he's working and has been known to shout, shake his fist, and even throw things when someone is making too much noise. However, he is not really a nasty Guumi at all; he's just a bit socially inept from his voluntary isolation. He never expected anything to change in his life, which was fine with him. Everything was just as he liked it, after all.

But then one afternoon, he was flying home when he heard a small Guumi calling for help and saw her struggling in a river, and he couldn't just turn away. He swooped down, caught her up in his claws and carried her to the bank. After getting her bearings back, the little Guumi introduced herself as Keelie and gave Sorrel a huge hug while thanking him profusely. Sorrel was not used to hugs and managed to push her away with difficulty, but Keelie wasn't discouraged. She decided that she and Sorrel were going to be friends right then and there and began tagging along with him everywhere when he went out. Sorrel tried to convince her to go home and leave him alone, but she wouldn't listen, and besides, Sorrel didn't try as hard as he might have since he was a little worried that Keelie might get into more trouble without anyone to look out for her. She didn't seem to have much common sense.

Over time, Sorrel got used to Keelie and even started to like her a little. After all, she listened to his speeches and at least pretended to be interested, even if she didn't understant a word of it. Being friends with Keelie eventually led to Sorrel having more friends, since Keelie was so sociable and always insisted on introducing every new friend she made to Sorrel and telling them he would be their friend, too. Thought he's still a bit reluctant, Sorrel would have to admit it's not so bad having friends after all, so long as he doesn't have to be with them all of the time.

Keelie Friend

Keelie is a young Guumi whom Sorrel saved from a river one day, and who decided to pay him back with her friendship. She's very childlike and naive, with little sense for danger, and would often walk right into trouble without friends to look out for her. Sorrel has reluctantly become one of those friends, but finds himself growing a bit more fond of her over time. She helps him learn to be a little more social and make other friends, and provides him with a nonjudgemantal audience for his speeches and such.

Gumbie Friend

Gumbie is a very gentle and calm Guumi whom Sorrel met through Keelie. Gumbie often helps Sorrel calm down when he gets stressed out by making him tea and talking with him about unrelated things, or discussing the problem and helping to come up with solutions. Gumbie always keeps his head, so he's a very good influence on Sorrel. Sorrel is also grateful that Gumbie takes over keeping Keelie busy frequently to give him time to himself to work.

Rascal Annoyance

Rascal is a young Guu who has started hanging out with Keelie quite a bit. Keelie thinks of him as a friend or little brother or something, but Sorrel doesn't really know what to make of him. Rascal can't talk yet, so Sorrel usually doesn't know what he wants and relies on Keelie to interpret his sounds and gestures. Overall, Sorrel is just really uncomfortable around Rascal, but if he's Keelie's friend, he's going to be around and Sorrel has to live with it, like it or not.

Frodi Neighbor

Frodi is an eccentric, reclusive Guumi who presumably lives in the woods somewhere near Sorrel's tree, though no one knows his exact abode, or if he even has one at all. He will sometimes pop up out of nowhere to give advice or provide assistance for reasons known only to himself. Sorrel is just one of many Neverlings that Frodi likes to visit periodically.
