Personality

Kamui tends to believe the best in people, and more often than not that comes around to bite him in the ass. Being the eldest of three siblings, one extremely timid and one a devious obnoxious little shithole, he's far more mature than his years. He's often the voice of reason among his companions. (True lawful) A little bit of a stickler for the rules. Typically appears cool and collected, but underneath is a warm heart of compassion and a strong sense of duty and protectiveness. He's not above sacrificing himself for his friends if the need arises. Regardless of whatever is thrown in his way, there's a stalwart loyalty in him that never goes away. Though he's often quiet and typically unnoticed in a discussion, he's a good listener and always contributes meaningfully to a conversation — unless it's to take a humorous jab at his friends.

While his clan is known for its warriors, Kamui conversely does not like "fighting for the sake of fighting", and highly disapproves of senseless killing. As a pacifist at heart, he believes strongly in his uncle's ideals that the strongest win wars without fighting, and power should be used to protect the peace. That isn't to say he isn't strong however; he frequently comes out on top in his clan's tests of strength, and is a master of martial arts — both armed and unarmed. While as a draukyn, he is unable to project aura to perform magic, he is unusually adept in recognizing magic being used, and visualizing auras, as well as manipulating his own aura to augment his physical abilities, strengths much of his clan has discarded and forgotten.

He likes to spend his alone time meditating, and dislikes sweet things. Even though he's a desert native, he prefers the cold to the heat, but is hardly bothered by extreme temperatures.

There is a person he is searching for, but he doesn't know whether it's merely for closure or if his greatest wish is to have that person in his life again.

Profile

Kamui Ryuunosuke is the firstborn son of his tribe's leader, Mikoto Ryuunosuke of the Black Thunder. As such, he's expected to uphold all the tribe values and such, and of course, be the strongest in the family. Unfortunately, his views are very much different from his father's, and in the extremely patriarchal society of his tribe he's more often than not scrutinized for standing up for his sister. It was his sister who taught him how to use his aura like so, and he still has doubts about going to attend Areshia Academy and leaving her behind. He's always threatened by his asshole of a little brother, who actually does share his father's views and could upset his whole goal of making his tribe a better community.

Between him, his younger brother, and his younger sister, he's the least chaotic of the three, no doubt because of his eldest-brother status. As a child, he was favored by both his father and uncle, his father for his strength and his uncle for his kindness. Because his uncle didn't marry (shhh, he's gay), he was raised to be the next tribe leader. As an advocate against the infighting between the Draukyrn tribes, for women's rights, and equal opportunity, Ieyasu was far from popular amongst the voices that mattered in his tribe, and especially not with Mikoto.

After his father's plot to usurp leadership of the plan ended in partial failure, his mother divorced and left his father, leaving him to be half a functioning parent for his siblings at only nine years old. Kazuro was four, and Shira was barely one when Celenne left the household. While this served only to create friction between him and Kazuro, he grew up to be very close with his younger sister. All the while, his father tried to force him to give up his uncle's views– claiming him to be "soft" and "weak" and "misguided about the world". As Kamui matured, he would speak out more and more against his father– but never once truly disobeying him.

When Kamui was invited to study at Areshia Academy under scholarship, ordinarily, he would never accept, as he believed his sister to depend on him. However he was ordered to by his father, under the pretense of letting him see the outside world, and that he'd better come back stronger, or else he'd wasted the time and education spent on him. It was actually a ploy to get him out of his hair, and separate him from his sister. There, he would meet some of his closest friends: Alina, the younger princess of Yuelin, Tsumiyuna, Alina's cousin who was more often than not getting the group into trouble, (and he'd never admit this,) Rowan, the heir of Silver Frost.

As an Aura Guardian, he believes strongly in the organization's ideals to uphold peace, justice, and stability within the region. While he was a lower ranked member, he believed the organization was doing exactly that, but as an Elite, in near-leadership of the Guardians, his beliefs are shaken somewhat, especially after the Nightshade case, and current events surrounding Team Shadow and the former princess hiring them as mercenaries in her war to reclaim the throne.

Relationships

  • Alina
    • Alina was Kamui's closest friend during their academy days. While it could be said it was partially because she reminded him of his sister, he denies it is because of that that he's so drawn to her. She was too fight-happy, chaos seeking, and didn't have a care in the world as to what the world thought of her. To Kamui, she's the light of his life, and he would do anything to see her happy.
    • However, at the same time, he's mindful of the gap between them, as she's a princess of Yuelin, and he's only the heir of a tribe of his clan. Logically, it wasn't a very big gap, and Alina didn't seem to care, but it always felt present to him. On rare occasions, he could see a vulnerable side to her, something that she didn't show anyone else. But it was mere moments, flickers in time, before she was back to the confident (shitposter) self she always was.
    • The first time he had his heart broken was when Alina mentioned offhandedly that she was asexual after getting harassed by a guy at a nightclub. He hadn't realized that he was in love until he realized he had no chance with her at all. He resolved to still stand at her side though– regardless if they could be together, he could still always support her as a friend, right?
    • The second time he had his heart broken, was when she was said to have died in the Areshia Academy fire. Maybe it was a pipe dream, but he chose to believe that she was out there somewhere, as her body was never found.
  • Tsumiyuna
    • Two peas in a pod with Alina, wherever one was found, the other was probably close by. He became close friends with Alina's magi cousin by association, and more often than not was on the receiving end of her pranks and bullying. She finds his lack of resistance to magic hilarious, as something as minor as the equivalent of a flick left a bruise for days.
    • For a while, she used Kamui as a means to get closer to Rowan, who she'd been interested in, but ultimately didn't pursue the relationship because Rowan wasn't interested in return.
    • As he struggled with his feelings for Alina, Yuna became a close confidant of his. Despite the fact that she'd still bully him endlessly over not confessing his feelings, she still supports him and for a while after Alina's apparent passing, she was his emotional (and physical) support friend.
    • While the two have grown apart a bit as time went on and both moved on, they're still close enough for Yuna to bend the rules and slip information Kamui doesn't have the clearance to see to him. She also frequently doesn't give a rat's ass about budget and existing assignments and sends her friends to help each other on their missions. More than a few times, it's saved Kamui from a sticky situation.
  • Rowan
    • Friendly rivals; constantly butting heads and bickering. Most likely hatefucking. Once upon a time they used to be paired together often in squads; they've grown a bit distant after both becoming Elites, with Rowan constantly being away on missions.
  • Lenn
    • aaaa
    •
    • okay but actually aaaaaaaaaaaaa
    • its trauma time babey
    • theres too much to unpack so I'll just stick it in a spoiler
      • At first, Kamui's not too sure what to think about Lenn. He does all the wrong things for the right reasons, and that mildly infuriates him because it open up a whole can of worms on morality and righteousness that he doesn't quite want to address. He hates the fact that Lenn's first instinct to problems is to kill or otherwise remove those that are in the way, but in the end, he agrees that much of his reasoning is right.
      • When they're forced to work together, Kamui quickly discovers that even though he and Alina share no surface similarities, they feel the same to be with. However no matter how he tries, Lenn seems to only keep him at arm's length– any attempts, overt or covert, to learn more about the assassin are instantly shut down.
      • Lenn on the other hand holds a bit of resentment towards Kamui and the rest of his friends for what he perceives as abandoning him. But mostly fear, that he won't be accepted if they find out who he once was.
      • It's not until Lenn accidentally falls asleep in Kamui's presence that he begrudgingly starts to open up, and Kamui grows to respect him through that. and he might be falling for him. he's not gay, right? crisis 2.0 when he finds out that Lenn is– or was born, a woman. With this he thinks he has enough evidence to confront Lenn, and ask if he's Alina.
      • "I told you already. Princess Alina died by my hand.

What's left in this body is nothing more than a hollow shadow.

She is not me, and I am not her. Do not call me a woman again or I will kill you."
      • For a period of time as Lenn cuts himself off from the rest of the Aura Guardians, Kamui's once again not sure what to think. Lenn had changed so much from Alina, but he still has to acknowledge that he still has feelings for him.
        • Yuna: Moron
        • Kamui: Say that again, Chibi?
        •  Yuna: I said, you're a fucking moron. And I'm fucking blind. Lenn hasn't changed at all since back then. He's just damn good at hiding his feelings. And I guess he had to be, given how he grew up.
      • At Yuna's encouragement  bullying Kamui confesses to Lenn, who takes it rather flatly. He's not interested in a romantic or sexual relationship, but he doesn't deny that the idea of being partners in life appeals to him. And at Kamui's encouragement, he reconnects with each of his former friends.
      • all is well that ends well! /j
      • aka this is entering true spoiler territory :)
      • Lenn... honestly uses Kamui as a bit of an emotional crutch because he has too much™️ going on and keeping secrets while not lying is hard™️ but telling people the truth is harder™️. He's one of the only people that has ever witnessed Lenn breaking down.
  • Fayori
    • flirts with kamui endlessly.
  • Emerald
    • Kamui always felt Princess Emerald was a league above him when they were in the academy, even if Alina roped her sister into hanging out with "her and the nerds" (affectionate).
    • It's not until Emerald associates with the Aura Guardians as both a temporary member and their client that Kamui gets close to her, and honestly? is slightly terrified at Emerald's strength and intelligence. Emerald however, immediately identified him, the Avrian siblings, and Yuna as ones most likely to help in her plans.
    • Kamui may not be able to bully yuna, but he's definitely able to bully emerald.

Story

 History

Kamui's life might have played out far differently had his father not acquired leadership of his tribe when Kamui was nine. Fed up with his brother's deviant views, Kamui's father poisoned the meal of both the White Flame leader Conrad and his brother during a clan gathering, attempting to frame both their murders on Silver Frost's leader, Andreas. Said plan was partially foiled by his mother, who, knowing of the plot, also laced her brother's meal with the antidote before making herself scarce that night. Armed with knowledge from his sister and the threat to reveal said information to the three tribes, Conrad demanded the divorce and return of his sister, Celenne. Mikoto agreed, on the condition of a duel: Should he win, Conrad would take that knowledge to the grave, and if he lost, Mikoto would agree to the divorce.

Conrad soundly trounced Mikoto. Celenne surrendered custody of her children and returned to her birth tribe. As Ieyasu had no children, leadership of the clan passed to Mikoto's hands. Kamui had to take up the mantle of "parent" to his siblings, trying his best to be what he remembered of his mother and uncle.

With his siblings, Kamui grew up to have very different relationships with them. He was often at odds with Kazuro, as his father pitted them both against each other often. Shira he was much closer to, partially because he was the protective big brother, and partially because she had few friends and grew up isolated from other girls her age. She'd often watch him train, and by some manner of child genius developed a unique way to use aura amongst the clan– despite the draukyrns' limited aura abilities, and despite their tribe's laws banning girls learning to fight.

After the destruction of Areshia, rather than returning home like his father wanted him to, he chose to remain with his friends and transferred to the academy in Kokukari Village with everyone else. After graduation, he was recruited into the Aura Guardians, and

Starting an Argument - by Tobin

"I don't understand how you can always choose the course of violence," Kamui huffed, seemingly out of nowhere. They'd been walking between classes, something that had started up out of convenience, seeing as their courses were so close. He never started an argument before, but maybe he was being uncharacteristically dumb and didn't think this would be one. "You seem to understand even the most premature of preemptive measures, no matter how violent in history."

"Well, you can't just let people hurt you!" Alina declared, throwing his hands up - having already become frustrated at the topic. "Besides, it's always better to strike first, so you don't get taken by surprise. If someone else gets you by surprise, how do you know you can defend yourself?"

"If you know they're going to attack you, how would you be surprised?" he asked, nowhere near as heated as Alina was. It only frustrated him more to see the other so calm, even though he was the one who'd started the argument, to begin with. "It seems a bit foolish not to expect an attack you know enough about to target someone for it, to me."

"But what if they get you while you're sleeping? You can't expect anything while you're sleeping, let alone defend yourself from it. Better to get them first!" Alina nearly shouted, realizing they'd come to a stop outside of their next courses. "Why'd you bring this up anyway? You don't even like arguing," he grumbled out, arms crossed. He considered proving that violence could solve things when Kamui laughed at his question.

"You're right; I don't like arguing. But, an argument gets you to spend more time talking, and I do like that," he said with a sidelong smile. "I'll see you again after these classes, and this time I'll try not to get you going like this."

'Till We Meet Again - by Joywing

A figure walks the cold cobblestone streets, silent except for the ruffle of a slight breeze. Visibility was low, grasping mists gathering following the fall of rain. The nighttime might have been eerie, shadows and the illusion of something not-there slowly cutting away at the mind. Yet, for the seeming-wanderer, it was just another day on the job.

The officials always asserted that there was nothing wrong. That despite all the convenient ‘accidents’, and unfortunate tragedies, they would be safe under their rule. To Kamui, their ability to cover their tracks was about as competent as their attempts to enforce the law. The taste of fear was strong in this little town, every citizen watching their back, wondering if they would really wake up again in the morning. He was one man, but he offered his eyes, a sentinel against the mysterious monsters in the dark.

He continued his patrol, untouched by the chill in the air. The night seemed to pass like any other, the lunar half-lidded eye looking down on the wanderer. Sometimes he might see another face on these streets, a lost drunkard, or an officer ‘examining’ the town, but for tonight, it seemed he was alone. For a moment, he yawned, blinking sleep out of his eyes. The sole vanguard could not lapse.

Wait. A glimpse, flitting in the dark. Anyone else might have seen a moth, drawn to the light of the moon, or a rat scavenging in the dirt. Yet, the young warrior saw something else: the trademark grace of someone who did not wish to be found. Swiftly he went to that glance, seeking the owner of the half-shadow. There was little to no trace, seemingly an illusion, a trick of the mind. And again, something spurred Kamui forward, tracing a path that seemed so familiar. Another shard, another glimpse, keen instincts guided the warrior. He was sure now, someone...something was here. Just a few steps ahead of him. Their method was well-honed, a broken stone here, a scrap of cloth there, calculated misdirection to throw the pursuer off the trail. A trick that he felt he saw long ago.

A game of cat and mouse, played on both ends by those who had done this a thousand times before. Every move made was counteracted, the prey always just a little bit out of reach. The balance was on a hair’s breadth, the slightest mistake, the slightest misfortune ending their elegant dance.

With a tip and a gentle creak of a board beneath the foot, the balance collapsed.

An echoing crash broke Kamui’s concentration. It was right ahead, too large to ignore. He moved swiftly, his instincts alert to the potential threat. When he arrived, he came to a collapsed canopy, and a dark-clothed figure, cursing as he pulled himself from the wreckage. The movement and skill was unmistakable: He had found the assassin.

“You there, halt!” The figure glanced back at the voice, sharp green eyes looking out under his hood. Just for a moment, they seemed to widen, the assassin hesitating in the debris. Kamui took his chance, launching himself at the unknown criminal. The assassin recovered quickly, tucking down and pulling out of his reach, but not before the determined warrior could pull the mask off of the mysterious wanderer.

Seeing his face, everything finally clicked into place.

“Alina?! You’re alive?!” Kamui stumbled back, dropping the mask in shock. It seemed impossible. He was there when the Academy went up in smoke. He searched, counting the survivors over and over again. That treasured friend, who taught him so much was gone, and nothing he could do, nothing he could’ve done would bring her back. Yet here she was, steeped in the black trade of death. The figure scowled, retrieving his strewn mask.

“Alina is dead. She’s been gone for a long time.” He curtly responded. Despite being caught, he moved in an almost casual manner, dusting the debris from his suit. Kamui could only watch his old friend recline on a wooden support, his mind reeling with a million questions.

“You should be more worried about yourself. What kind of Aura Guardian gets seen chatting with an assassin?” The assassin snarked, twirling a loose lock in his fingers. The young warrior shook himself out of his stupor, keeping a close eye on the exits from the alleyway.

“That’s besides the point. You know I can’t just let you leave, and I don’t want to hurt you. Just...explain yourself. Please.” Kamui braced himself, preparing for another fight. The assassin sighed, shaking his head.

“How do you know that I’m really who you think I am? I could be a stranger with her face for all you know. Time changes people. You don’t even know if you’re the same person as you are yesterday.” Pulling a knife from his sleeve, he balanced it on the tip of his finger, idly spinning it as he spoke.

“Those tricks of yours certainly haven’t changed. All these years, and chasing you is still just as annoying.” Kamui looked him right in the eyes, unwavering. It was slight, but he thought he saw a glimmer of amusement in his emerald eyes.

“Heh, there’s more of the Kamui I know. You should skip to the banter next time, the whole ‘please surrender’ speech gets a little old.” It was a light tease, and for a moment, he felt like they were back in the Academy, trading jabs after a long day of study. He shook his head. He still had a duty to do.

“You would be lucky to get small talk at all. Anyone else would attack you on sight.” He took a deep breath. If it came down to it, the people had to be kept safe. “If you’re here to kill someone, you’ll have to go through me.”

“Geez, and here I thought we’d move away from the cliche hero lines. Listen, have you considered I’m not here to commit murder?” The assassin quipped, rolling his eyes. “If I don’t get to the target to get her out of here, Team Shadow will. And they aren’t going to be as nice as I am.”

“Right, because I’m supposed to trust the cloaked black figure with a dozen knives in their sleeves.” The warrior shot back. The assassin simply shrugged.

“It’s your choice. You let me go, and I get an innocent girl out of the country. Or you stall me, and Team Shadow ‘disappears’ her. What will it be?” The two of them were silent, staring each other down in that small alleyway. Common sense screamed at him to tackle him right then and there, pin him so the rest of the Guardians could interrogate him. The law, the rules he upheld demanded that the assassin be brought to justice. Yet, that tiny voice still spoke, that maybe he was telling the truth. That he was still the good person that he knew so long ago.

Kamui gritted his teeth as he stood down.

“...Just go. Do what you need to do, but I won’t do this again.” The assassin gave a cheshire’s grin, bracing himself to leap off, into the night.

“Not sure how much this means, but thanks. I’d say I’d make it up to you, but we probably shouldn’t meet again.” Before the assassin could leave, Kamui found his voice once more.

“Wait, one more thing. If you’re not Alina anymore, what do I call you?” The assassin paused, mulling the question in his mind.

“Lenn. You can call me Lenn.” Kamui nodded, his gaze lingering as Lenn disappeared into the night, without another word or a backwards glance.

The warrior was alone on that cold street once again, with naught but the old wound of grief to keep him company.
