Masame

leave it to me, I’m a super hero!

age: 29 gender/pronouns: trans woman, she/her
birthday: 3/30 romo/sexual orientation: aromantic bisexual
occupation: security guard voice: sharp, harsh, loud
species: monster, leopard shark based alignment: chaotic good
name in kana: マサメ

Appearance

masame is a 6’5” tall humanoid with a sturdy, muscular build. she has tan skin and brown eyes. she has a flat chest. she has gills on the sides of her neck and torso that allow her to breathe under water. she has a large, shark tail, and a shark fin protruding from her back. her skin is spotted with darker patches of brown in a similar fashion to a leopard shark, and she has freckles on her face. she also has various electrical burn scars across her body. her hair is short, brown and choppy. she cuts it herself. her teeth are sharp (as a sharks would be) although she doesn’t have multiple rows of them.

in terms of her clothing, she usually opts for things that balance free movement and protection. she fights unarmed, so she usually has her hands wrapped up in bandages, and wears steel-toed combat boots for kicking. she likes loose fitting pants, and usually wears a long, open jacket without a shirt. she also wears sunglasses, mainly because she thinks it makes her look cool. she likes neutral, earth tones. her intent with her fashion is to come off as intimidating, and her body language is wide and aggressive to complement that. she doesn’t smile much.

Personality

the first impression that people get of masame is that she’s a threat. on some level, masame leans into it, being conscious both of her stature and being a shark. on another hand, masame only really wants to be threatening to those that she pins as evildoers. at her core, masame wants to be a force of good in the world, and while her aims have changed somewhat after she came under monstrucatus’s control, she still holds onto that goal of being a hero. she can be a bit testy, and is wary around others while still feeling out their sense of morals. it takes a while for her to really open up to people, mainly because she wants to be absolutely sure that the person is on her side before she can trust them. appealing to her morals is a good way to get on her better side, but she is observant and will watch your actions to make sure they match with your words.

her system of morals isn’t entirely internal; she takes note on the values and beliefs of the society around her. there are some things that she is steadfast on, but as she is frustrated by things that fall in a moral grey area, she will often default to either her gut feeling or the reactions of people around her. people often write her off as being all muscle and no brains, but she’s quite in tune with her emotions and the emotions of those around her. while she is often angry at her current situation, she has funneled that anger into bettering herself by practicing sparring or exercising.

she is kind to those who deserve it. she is softer to those who are obviously physically weaker than her, although she is aware that she can’t control others reactions to her. she has a great sense of humor, and is good at cracking jokes to diffuse a situation if nothing else seems to be working.

to those she is close to, masame is their biggest cheerleader. she cares deeply about her friends wellbeing, and encourages their improvement in any way she can, whether that’s being a sparring partner or bringing food and caffeine to someone studying late into the night. when masame’s friends are sad, however, she tends to slip into more of a tough love type of comfort, being sometimes borderline aggressive in trying to coax others out of a slump. she’s able to tell when that isn’t working though, and backs off before things get uncomfortable.

she is often understimulated, and tends to go on runs around the school’s campus to burn off extra energy. that, or you can find her in the gym running drills on a punching bag. she isn’t particularly book smart, and finds a lot of traditional teaching methods boring. she does, however, want to learn more things, and is searching for a method that appeals to her. she dislikes following orders, preferring to stick to her instincts over what someone else things. she speaks fairly casually, and is brusque to both superiors and her friends. it can come off as rude, but really masame just doesn’t see value in being anything but direct in her speech.

Backstory

masame grew up with her dad, with no siblings. her mom had left shortly after masame’s birth. masame didn’t spend much time in schooling, and ended up entering the workforce fairly early on as a way to support herself and her dad. she worked a lot of manual labor jobs. when she turned eighteen, she decided she wanted to leave home and explore the world on her own, in a somewhat grandiose ideal to better the world through protecting the innocent. being that there wasn’t much for masame in her hometown (and not that he could stop her regardless), her father sent her off with his blessings.

masame spent time working odd jobs, and eventually crossed paths with anachou. as the eel was a force of unrelenting destruction, masame took it upon herself to be the one to stop him. the two were matched in strength, and so they became locked in a (sort of friendly?) rivalry.

as focused on fighting with each other as they were, neither of them kept tabs on the scenery, and ended up getting swept to land by a hurricane. the unfamiliar landscape unintentionally served to keep them linked together, as now they were the only thing the other knew from the ocean. they pursued each other across the country, eventually landing in monstrucatus’s domain. the school took notice of them after some property damage from one of their battles. monstrucatus captured masame successfully, but failed to capture anachou.

the school decided to press masame into service as a security guard due to her strength. on capturing her, they implanted her with a tracking device (or at least… they claim they did), so masame is hesitant to try to escape while they know where she is. she’s not… enthusiastic about her situation, but as she doesn’t see an obvious way out, she tries to make the best of her situation. she does to some small degree, worry about anachou

writes her name in katakana. it’s a portmanteau of one of the readings for the kanji for justice (masa) and the japanese word “same” (shark) her original origins had a lot of characters with similarly punny names (´・ω・`)

anachou

masame and anachou are each others bitterest rivals, and closest friends. masame met anachou while she was in the middle of figuring out her life, and wanting to stop him gave her an anchor point. she took delight in the fact that they are equally matched, and used that to motivate herself to redouble her efforts at getting stronger. somewhere along the way masame realized that she didn’t necessarily want to stop anachou, seeing as his violent impulses were now redirected at her rather than random civilians, which was her main beef in the first place. she hasn’t fully processed that, though.

masame doesn’t genuinely hate anachou, more so she hates his actions. she’s come to believe that anachou’s violence doesn’t come from a place of malice, but rather from stress and frustration. she’s perfectly fine as serving as someone for him to redirect that violence to. now that she’s been locked away in monstrucatus, she’s coming to terms that fighting with anachou on a regular basis stabilized her more than she was aware.
