Varis was born to a wealthy family in the southern Farreaches. Most of her childhood was spent with her family. Her mother and father and older brother Mikael. She spent her days free of worry, as the Winholds were well respected and the town of Ashefell was well protected from the outside world. Varis’s father Alemn Winhold was a decorated soldier and helped to turn the tide in the war. He held much influence over the Farreaches, so much so that there were some who sought to assassinate him in order to quiet his voice. He tried to keep his family protected, but there were some fail safes he kept in place should anything happen to him. First, if the Winhold estate were to ever be attacked, his children should be the priority in the escape. He wrote a letter to both his daughter and his son telling them that the Imperium should never be trusted, to stay safe and always fight for their freedom and what was right.

One night, Alemn’s worst nightmare came true. As everyone slept, a group of assassins under the leadership of the Imperium broke into the estate and attempted an assassination on the Winholds. It failed however, and a great battle ensued. Unfortunately, the assassins managed to destroy the entire Winhold home. Alemn tried his best to hold fast, but there was nothing he could do to stop his home from burning to the ground. Knowing that his men couldn’t hold for much longer, he told his most trustworthy servants to take his children far far away, hoping that they may have a chance to escape the assassins and build a new life for their family. The servants took Varis and Mikael far away from Ashefell into elven territory, where they became refugees. Varis and her brother spent the rest of their childhood in the elven village of Andall’al. It was there that Varis met Cullen, a half elf, and the two became fast friends. They bonded over the fact that they were both oddities in the village.

When she was old enough the servants gave her the letter that was written for her by her father. Instead of calming her and easing her anxieties, it turned them to anger. She began to lash out, blaming both the Imperium and the Empire for destroying her family. If her father was alive, which she highly doubted, she had no idea where he was, and the thought that he could be out there either totally alone or rotting in a beggars grave enraged her. Noone cared about any of these people. They lived in poverty, recovering from a war that no one ever asked for. Their lives were destroyed for nothing. After some time, Varis decided to leave the village to go and speak with the Queen of Talmar. Nobody was speaking up for the people who needed help, so she decided that it was going to be her. Mikael, now married to a beautiful elven woman who was with child with their firstborn, tried to convince her to stay, but Varis was set on speaking with the queen. So she set out with Cullen by her side and began the long journey to the capital city.

Cullen is Varis’ best friend. The two of them have been two peas in a pod since Varis went to live in Andall’al with her brother Mikael after her home was destroyed. Varis looks to Cullen for emotional support, especially since she feels abandoned by everyone around her. As someone in a similar situation, Cullen is happy to oblige.
