About

Ares is my player character for DeckThisOut (Ashley's) Highkey Self-Indulgent 5e Campaign called Cascade! He's a warlock assassin to a demon queen, a vampire, and an all-around annoyance.

Ares' temper isn't the only thing about him that's short. He joined the party to keep an eye on Rocco and hope that it would take him to Hector, but ended up learning more about the world and his place in it than he bargained for. By tagging along with the Resistance, Ares ended up becoming a part of it and learned that there are absolute goods and evils out there, and he can actually do something about them. Since then he has done his best to fit in with his crew and become a better person. Ares has had to reevaluate his views of the world, of people, and most of all himself!

Normally very easily irritated and quick to react, Ares has been learning where his rage originated. His Rozen Rapier, a slice of his queen Lachesis, fed into Ares' anger and intensified it. His life working as an officer of the Vale has also pushed him to think of himself above all others, even those he used to consider family. Being among people who show him genuine care has set Ares' world on its ear.

Cascade

Ares joined Cascade under the guise of being chased by members of the Vale. He feigned injury, covered in blood, when it was absolutely not his own. He beseeched the Circus for safe harbor and happily took up a magic act with Domino, fought along side the merry band of resistance fighters until they accidentally wound up in Hell after a brief interaction with The Black Knight.

In hell, the party discovered Ares' affiliation with the one true queen of hell, Lachesis Kadenza pax Bellona von Carnelian. They also discovered his grudge against Rocco's father Hugo, and that the man that killed him and caused his transition intoa vampiric state was none other than Issac Graves, Rocco's bodyguard. They also discovered Rocco was prince of said hell kingdom, and some form of descendant to Lachesis. This went about as well as one could expect. The brand on Ares' thigh was removed, and his queen recognized him as her champion.

Ares assisted with a handful of Resistance events, getting mages to a resistance base and meeting members of the Calloway royal family. They fought Monsignior West, a Vale Officer who had been kidnapping mages, and helped begin to expose the Vale's corruption. He met up with Issac, who agreed to help kill Ares' former mother figure, after Ares realized that he was less her child more her pet, and a source of magical energy for her. They found out she was a lich. That's sure to come back and bite him in the ass. While his friends Vivienne and Rocco were being commended for their work by the Vale (for...exposing West), Ares tried to sneak into the Patriarch's office to steal a sword. That went poorly. He, Vivienne, and Issac formed a plan to steal said sword, as Vivienne had been recently branded by it. After much ado and one very conspicuous murder inside the Rockfort Circus, the team stole the sword and Ares soulbound himself to it, because he's an idiot. They also rescued a bunch of mages (including Kimberly Quinn) in the process. Whew.

Unfortunately immediately after that, Ares tried to let Bishop talk to the Hollowed Blade longsword that they'd stolen from the Patriarch, and things went sideways. Bishop's soul, which had been split into a handful of the cursed weapons, did its best to merge. Kairos managed to teleport them out of the base into somewhere safe. That turned out to be just outside Calendora, the country formerly locked in a timeloop that Bishop is from. There, they spent several days figuring out how to get into the city: the gods Monty and Honestly guarding the gates and handling the intake policy. Eventually they made their way in, met with Bishop's fellow sphinx brother, his vampire retainer, and had a few blessed days of relaxation while they figured out how to get home, and get the information they sought from Calendora's history. Unsurprisingly this took them back to hell, where they went through every room of the seven deadly sins, may have accidentally released a piece of Pride, Vivienne died, and they finally found the throne room where they learned about Rocco's lineage and how the weapons they were seeking were being used by the Vale.

Ares learned his brand came from Hugo Greylock, and they discovered who held each of the weapons. They investigated a pool, and Lachesis refused to answer Ares' questions about the weapons and how to remove brands witout him placing the rapier on the pedestal it belonged to. After all the things he'd been through, Ares refused. He found he cared more about his friends than power for the first time in his life. They also discovered a pool of magic underneath the fountain in the throne room, and met Jericho for the first time. Later in Calendora, Ares went out with Velvet and did some vampire bonding, and wound up getting railed by him before they left. They discovered a temple to Bishop, and above it, the place where Kairos had killed Bishop over and over again when the city was stuck in its loop, revealing their dear friend was a God.

Since they've returned to the Rockfort Circus and the city of Cordelia, they've fought a kraken and won in the name of the Resistance. In the aftermath of Bishop's death during the fight and his resurrection, Bishop's former retainer Emilio took Ares' swords and ran. They chased him down and found him climbing onto the back of a dragon with the Dark Knight (they now knew to be Hector) and another large knight in armor that they found to be Nicollete (a former friend of Talmage's) after a fight. Ares summoned the Hollowed Blade back to his hand, but the Rozen Rapier, his trusty partner for the past five years, was taken from him.

Origin

Ares doesn't remember his biological family. For as long as he could remember, he was raised by Magilou, an agent of covert intelligence in the Vale. He was tested for magical affinity as a half-elf, and trained with blades from a very young age. Ares took to the rapier and learned that his best weapons were in fact, a wink and a smile. He learned to do the talking over the stabbing, and while he never fit in with any of his colleages, he carried on trying to be the best assassin he could be.

Eventually, Ares met Issac Graves as a member of the Vale Black Ops squadron. The two worked together for decades, as fellow assassins and skilled agents of death. Ares would put on a show, do the talking, and Issac would clean up the mess. At some point, Issac chose to leave the Vale. Ares' hurt at the loss of who he considered to be his only friend was overwhelming, and he took it out on his former partner, attacking him in his boiling rage. Ares lost the fight, and his life, but he took Issac's eye.

At some point, someone came along and rose Ares from the dead. He turned into a vampire as a result, and he is still not entirely sure how this happened. All Issac will reveal is that he had heard that it hadn't worked. Ares was given the magical blade, Lachesis' Rozen Rapier, by his mother, and found himself pact-bound to his new warlock patron, empowered with magic and a renewed anger at the world around him.

The Vale

Issac Graves

Issac was Ares' former partner in their class of Assassins at the Vale. They made an excellent team, Ares was the focus with a performance and a voice, while Issac cleaned up behind the scenes. Ares has had feeligns for Issac for as long as he can remember, and has never fully admitted the extent of them, even to himself. He regrets the tantrum he threw, regrets taking Issac's eye, and he's glad to have second chance at friendship.

Magilou

Ares' adoptive mother and trainer, his superior at the Vale, and a powerful witch. Ares has always harbored an immense affection for her, as she was always doting and indulgent of his wants and needs, but did not realize how intensely manipulative she was of his feelings, his future, and his magical ability. She gave him the Rozen Rapier, and in turn was likely siphoning off his magic for her own uses. He had no idea she was a lich until he went to kill her, and now he's nervous of when she might show up again.

Timoti Angelbow

Food. Dead. Don't fuck with his friends, bow boy.

The Lucile Family

All of the Luciles are incredibly intimidating to Ares, but he's determined to face them with his friends. Brayden seems like he could be swayed. Ayden seems to have his own thing going on. And Dayden seems to have no thoughts, head empty.

The Circus + Resistance

Gidley Rockfort

Ares adored the ringleader from the moment he met them. They welcomed him eagerly, treated him with the same level of batshit weirdness they treated everyone else, and along the way he learned they were a telepath and a capable bard. Ares was given a contract to assassinate the circusmaster, and instead informed Gidley of said assignment and gossiped about how low the bounty was. He fucked up at one point and killed Timoti inside the circus, resulting in a very long and elaborate apology.

Gwynfor Herald

At first the mime intimidated him; clowns can be creepy. Then the mime made fun of Talmage and Bishop, and he found him hilarious. And then he saw the extent of Gwynfor's magical abilities, and was humbled into intense respect. Gwynfor has saved his life with a bit of blood a handful of times, and kept the party on their feet in battle. He knows skill and power when he sees it. If Ares' head weren't so far gone in his affection for Issac, Gwynfor would spell trouble for the half-elf.

Kairos

Bishop's former lover, retainer, and the leader of the resistance, Kairos's (literally) holier-than-thou personality and confidence wear on him. Since he's learned more of Kairos' history and the things he has done to make sure the resistance grows, he's gained some respect for him, but the two do not get along. He wants to help Bishop figure out his relationship if only because he thinks the pair of them might cool off a bit if they'd just fuck already.

Player Characters

The Cascade Party

Talmage Sazerac

Ares doesn't know how someone with such an abraisive personality. wormed their way into his affections, but he thinks it has something to do with the fact that Talmage doesn't care how much of a fuck-up Ares seems to be. Talmage might be an even bigger fuck-up. Like, on the inside. He's bratty and crude, and Ares loves that about him. He's got a lot of promise and innate magical abilities, which are just stone-cold impressive to the vampire.

15583626_9n9_4613823.jpg?1564362764

Rocco Greylock

Ares initially intended to win Rocco over so that he could spy on the young man and get closer to the rest of the Greylock family. As he learned about Rocco's predicament, being the prince and heir to Ares' queen and warlock patron, he was interested in actually sticking close to him, to serve his future king and learn how to be of use. But as he learned what a kind heart resides inside him, and how little Rocco wanted to be pince of anything quite so demonic, he's come to feel genuinely protective of his former parter's ward.

IMG_1098-300x300.png

Bishop (Balen) Solis

Bishop's history and the traumas he's faced as a victim of manipulation by his older brother and a pawn in a millenias-old war made Ares see the world for how vast and complicated it really is. It started with Ares experiencing one of Bishop's memories and has evolved since. Bishop's strong sense of justice and rigid morals were so new to Ares, that while they can be hard for him to comprehend, thoroughly uproot decades of Vale indoctrination.

5881170?1587392619

Vivienne Delaroux

Vivi shares Ares' rage against the vale and the burning desire to use their power to fight and make it right. They have a tendency to agree on how to dispatch their enemies based on their similar upbringing. Vivienne has had his back many times in their recent adventures, and Ares intends to have hers in turn. The whole mess with her fiance is pretty, uh, complicated, though. (Brayden is kind of a tool.)

image.jpeg.jpg

Rajhaitra "Raja" Devrim

The deposed future queen of Vaselle and a fellow warlock, Ares enjoys Raja's grace and wit when she gets the chance to show it off. The two gossip together and share a similar opinion of the world at large; they make an excellent pair when trying to gather information. He hopes to be there with her in Vaselle when she retakes her throne, but if he's honest he's really curious what exactly the fuck is up with her relationship with Aedith, it seems kinda personal. And spicy.
