Name Ace Ladner
Called Ace
Age 16
Gender Male
Species Weaklet (OG) || Human (AUs)
Role Assistant
Alignment ---

Once a promising prodigy in the art of genetic manipulation, even earning the opportunity to learn under his role model and pioneer of the field, Karmeon Mendez. After an accident that destroyed a good portion of his mental capabilities, though, Ace's resigned to working as the man's assistant. He is guarded and very judgmental, cautious of who he lets in, but also very outspoken. Though part of him wishes he could go back and undo the events that ruined his and K'eon's old careers and quality of life, he's also aware of the blessings that these curses led to. From his friendship and connection with the person he admired most, to being free of the corrupt system that caused them so much misery in the first place.

About

Ace was born into an unfair world - his species a laughable commodity that was played with by higher beings. He's unsure of who his parents were, just that they were part of the sick breeding circles set up to produce 'pedigree' offspring. He didn't meet the mark, as indicated by the blue mark on his face. He sort of ignored the world around him by burying himself in studies, finding the theoretical world much more inviting than the existing one around him. He seemed to have a much deeper grasp of it than his peers did anyways, and once it was apparent he was above the benchmark, he reveled in pushing himself to the limit. Unlike a certain someone, he didn't care about the recognition - he just cared about the accomplishments themselves.

Eventually his hard work put him in place for early graduation and work studies - by 14, he was already being employed by the recently formed DNAltered Labs, being recognized by a huge role model in the field of his, Karmeon Mendez. Their similar background and intellect especially drew him to the man, as well as the appealing facade that K'eon presented to the world. But though he had great admiration for the man, that didn't keep him from dreaming about surpassing his legacy - a fact both knew well. Thus, a strange rivalry was born between this student-teacher combo.

The Job

All this changed a few months into Ace's tenure at the labs. A strange, otherworldly being had breached their dimension, and the labs wanted it analyzed and broken down so they could utilize some of its unique properties in future body modification projects. It would be the team's greatest job - or so they thought. Coming from a higher plane of existence, the being was simply beyond human comprehension, even to experts like them. Exposure to it was literally driving them insane, and one by one members of their team resigned until the team dwindled down to just K'eon and Ace working on the project.  The work load between them grew heavier, and work hours stretched to longer than ever. They took shortcuts, simultaneously altering themselves as they broke things down in order to carry the burden of translating the makeup of this being without totally losing themselves. Eventually, the project was finished. Perfect? Far from. But they'd transcribed the basics of the creature and managed to give it a mortal body that wouldn't tear a hole in the fabric of their dimension. And that was to be the end of that - K'eon and Ace removed the modifications they'd made to their body and mind for the project's duration and intended to wash their hands of this, return to normal jobs and their fluctuating rivalry.

Except their boss wanted more out of this - they couldn't just find this other worldly being with incredible properties and not get some use out of it! Every other member of the team absolutely refused to have any dealings with the proposition their boss threw at them, but he managed to hit the right nerves with Ace. Didn't he want to surpass K'eon? This is the first thing that was proven he couldn't do, or at least refused to - the perfect opportunity to pull ahead. Besides, they'd lasted so long on the project without faltering: clearly, Ace's mind was far past the normal capacity of man anyways, he'd be fine. Foolishly, he let himself be swayed by the flattering words. When it was just breaking down the basic makeup of this creature that defied all known laws of known science, he could distance his mind from it. But actively needing to comprehend and create from this base proved to be the breaking point. The knowledge itself seemed to come alive and leech off his mind, eating away at any logic or reason within. His obsession became actualizing The Code itself, breaking down the universe in just about every action he did. He'd scrawl the composition on every paper in his room, the desks, walls, everything, as it took over his brain and threatened to burst out of his mind. Ace was lost to a greater knowledge he couldn't handle, unable to eat, sleep. or function on his own and much too caught up in the forced thoughts of The Code to realize his descent.

Really, that would've been the end of it, if it wasn't for K'eon. Their rivalry must've meant more to him than Ace realized, because K'eon went so far as to break the law and risk his life-encompassing career to save him from the brink. He developed a technology that would reverse the effects of The Code's damage through audio waves emitted through special earbuds - he'd have to wear them at all times to stave off the mental rot, but he could think and function again, even if not at the capacity he once was able to. But in order to do that, K'eon had to steal experimental tech from their company and cross boundaries far out of his clearance - both were quickly fired and their reputations were dragged through the dirt and back. Ace's hubris had cost him not only his sanity and dream career, but that of his friend and idol's as well.

Post-Job

Surprisingly, K'eon didn't blame him or tear into him about his stupidity. Instead, he offered Ace a place to stay. With no other place to go, of course Ace agreed and stuck by K'eon, their rivalry completely subsiding to be replaced with a close friendship instead. It wasn't easy - with the public debacle of K'eon's crimes, it was near impossible for him to pick up a new job to support them. Ace felt like a dead weight, frustrated by how much help he'd need to accept from now on to do tasks that seemed simple before. Plus, he had to watch his friend slip into an alcoholic depression and attempt to drag him out of it. It was the one thing he could do to try and make up for his mistakes that caused this mess in the first place.

They had their disagreements of course, but their struggles drew them closer. And when an opportunity to put the past behind them did arise, Ace continued to follow and support K'eon as his assistant, happy to take the back seat and work beside him instead of against him.

Karmeon "K'eon" Mendez  [ Friend/Mentor/Boss/Pain in the Neck ]

This is one of those "don't meet your idols" situations that actually turned around for the better. Ace learned through time that the 'cool' and 'confident' mastermind he'd read about was nowhere near as cool or confident as he wanted to lead on. He finds that K'eon is way too preoccupied with what everyone thinks of him and is over ambitious, often self-centered and vain, and just downright annoying at times, but he'd never trade in his friendship with the guy. After all the sacrifices he made and the shocking loyalty he's displayed, Ace is willing to forgive the man of his faults, no matter how many headaches it causes.
