Design Notes
  • Wanda is pear-shaped
  • Naturally very pale and blonde; her eyebrows disappear when she doesn't wear makeup
  • Wears 20's style comfy dresses and loves big comfy cardigans
  • Favors cold colors, and blues in particular, as well as like browns and greys. Shimmer? She loves it.
  • Wears her hair up, and favors finger curls. Doesn't tend to let people see her without makeup, or with her hair down. The only exceptions to this are Maple (see Relationships) and her children. It's a vulnerability thing.
  • Doesn't do sexy intentionally.
Personality

Wanda is an awkward, shy woman who doesn't really know how to people, as a result of spending so much time inside her own home. If you visit her doll boutique, she'll be cheerful in the way customer service people are cheerful, but a little (lottle) awkward. She tries her best!

Wanda suffers from agoraphobia, but doesn't let that stop her from enjoying her life - she keeps active in her home, keeps work and leisure well separated. Does like youtube sports in the living room to keep active, reads Victorian romances religiously, and sews a lot of her own clothes.

Trivia
  • Wanda's favorite food is French Toast
  • She runs a doll boutique from the front of her house.
  • She runs a blog, "Remember the Fickles" about her parents' disappearance cases, and her life with the grief. She also uses the blog to bring attention to other missing person cases.
  • Hyperventilation makes parts of her body go numb and turn rigid.
  • Wanda has an old cat named Napoleon (named after a character is one of her favorite books, not the historical figure)
  • Loves Halloween.
  • Wanda prays every night, but instead of praying to God, she has a habit of praying to her parents. She knows they don't hear her, but likes telling them what's happening in her life anyway. Likes telling them that she misses them.
FEATURES / ABILITIES
Agoraphobia
Wanda suffers from pretty severe agoraphobia as a result of both her parents disappearing. She started developing it after her dad's disappearance, and it got really bad after her mom disappeared as well. Both indoor and outdoor public places give her anxiety and panic attacks.

Dollmaking and Sewing
Wanda is very handy, and learned dollmaking from her father - they made her first doll together when she was a child, and her love for that has followed her through her entire life. In her youth with her mother, she trained this skill, and taught herself to sew. She makes most of her dresses, and likes to make clothes for her friends and family as well.

History

Wanda was born as the first and only daughter and child to Wendy and Edward Fickle, who had tried unsuccessfully for a while and suffered some miscarriages. Wanda was very precious to her parents, and they both doted on her. Her childhood was happy, and supported, but she was never wrapped in cotton either - her parents didn't treat her like she was made of sugar.

However, when Wanda was ten, her family's trip out to the circus had a tragic ending when her father disappeared without trace, and was never found again. Wanda took the disappearance of her father hard - she'd made her first doll with him, and loved playing with him, and wanted him to always tell her bedtime stories, which he happily did. After her father's disappearance, Wanda started suffering from anxiety and panic attacks outside of the family home, and had to be taken from school to be homeschooled.

She was then homeschooled by her mother and they lived together and were very close to each other. Wendy Fickle was very understanding of her daughter's fears, but made sure that she got mental help as well, and never resented her daughter for keeping her home so much. Wanda loved her dearly. But when Wanda was 18, her mother disappeared too, on a shopping trip when Wanda was sleeping off an illness at home. Wanda has since kept her parents' memory alive on her blog, and advocates for visibility for a lot more people who have gone missing and don't gain mainstream visibility like many high profile cases.

Wanda is self-employed - she has coverted the front of her house into a doll boutique and sells her self-made dolls as well as genuine antique dolls. This is something she started building towards already when her mother was alive, and her mother supported it very much (not without making sure she knew the risks though, because Wendy Fickle wasn't in the business of raising a fool). Wanda regularly donates what parts of her profits she can to missing persons charities.

Alternate universes

Wanda exists in multiple AUs. The basics of her story (detailed in History above) are roughly the same in every verse, but some parts of the story differ. Her main story, however, happens in Owlyblend's Centennial Oaks:

CENTENNIAL OAKS / CENTURYVERSE
Wanda's father disappeared from a day to the circus when the Fog rose (which means Danger, generally speaking), and was never heard from again, and her mother disappeared on a shopping trip while Wanda was sleeping off a sickness. Wanda eventually finds out that her parents were taken and killed by Fog Striders, monstrous elk-like creatures that may come out in the Fog), and applies to declare her parents dead so she can let them rest and can move on herself.

Wanda meets her spouse-to-be, Maple (see relationships) when she orders food home, and they are the person to deliver to her and show great interest in her dolls (and buy one of the antique ones). They eventually start dating, get married, and have two children, Rowan, and Birch. Her pregnancy with Birch is Strange because the child is heavily tied to the Fog, and she has strange symptoms like being able chirp like her spouse, and really strong need to sort and play with shiny pebbles, among other symptoms. These fade when the child is born. In this verse, they find a way for her to live for a long time so she can keep living with Maple, who doesn't age like normal people.

WITCHVERSE @me
In Witchverse, which is personal sandbox universe of mine, Wanda is not a witch, but perhaps a near miss witch anyway, because certain kind of magic pools around her - when she started making dolls properly first as a hobby and then as her job, Wanda found that she often gets a very strong inspiration to make a doll, and must follow it, or anything else she tries feels like swimming against a current. She's sometimes a little annoyed, because other projects never happen as breezily, but believes the inspiration to still come from within herself. This is not so. These dolls, without her knowledge, or without anyone having noticed, look like people who have gone missing, and have died without being found. Their ghosts reach to her, somehow, even though they can't really move from where they died, and she unknowingly binds them to her dolls. If someone realized that this is happening, a lot of unsolved crimes could eventually be solved, because these dolls cry when they are brought to where the missing person died or is buried, and mediums could potentially communicate with the fragments, or trace them to the right place. Wanda, though, has no idea.

ICHORVERSE @punchywizard
In Ichorverse, Wanda lives behind her boutique in San Orchid, a huge mashup of like four or five cities all grown into each other. In this verse, her father, Edward Fickle, disappeared like in all other verses, but this time, he is very much alive. He was a dollmaker, and made beautiful detailed and articulated dolls - but also was a part of an underground operation that made illegal golems for Doll Fighting. The ring got busted, and Edward knew that he knew too much and had to just... disappear to protect his family, so that his trouble would never come to them. He goes by a fake name, or several, and keeps making illegal golems, and has never contacted his family - but does keep an eye on them, occasionally. Wanda is still looking for him, because he DID just vanish, and left no sign of what happened to him. Her mother disappears as well, for unrelated reasons, and is likely dead.

FAIRYTALE WORLD @Ammoth
Wanda's parents in this verse were unable to have a child for a long time, and her mother in particular was getting to a point where she was desperate. And so her mother went into the forest to a tree that you could go to if you were desperate like this, the Mother Tree - she sat in the cold pond by its roots and washed herself in it, and it gave her what she wanted... but in her desperation she had made an open deal, like everyone dealing with this tree does. She paid for this, and so did her entire family - Wanda's father disappeared first, and Wendy Fickle had to watch her child, the result of this deal, grow fearful an unlucky, develop agoraphobia, and so on, and disappeared herself shortly before Wanda's 18th birthday - Wendy never see her child reach adulthood in this sense. Wanda remains cursed by (and unaware of) her mother's deal, unable to get children herself when she starts trying with this verse's Maple, until she eventually can ask for help from Cypress. Wanda is friends with Aspen and Magnolia.

Wanda's dolls in this universe are made with love and care, and they carry that to their new homes.
