Species Enchanted Wooden Toy
Setting Fairy-Tale Winter World
About

Oh little sapling, what happened to you?
Who left you like this, botched up and askew?
Half carved and rough, cut up but not enough,
Not quite tree anymore
But no toy to be sure.

Who gave you a heart but no voice and no eyes
Who made you alive and then cast you aside?
And how do you hope to finish what was started
If you can't see your tools
And you can't tell a soul?

A rough, badly-carved toy, all chipped corners and unpolished wood. They are deeply lonely and isolated, their unfinished state making communication very difficult. They are blind and mute, for their creator never gave them eyes or a voice. Very self-conscious and withdrawn, they do not like themself much and desperately want to be finished, so they can finally feel whole.
Sometimes, Magnolia will paint things in them, in an effort to cheer them up. They can't see her drawings, but it makes them happy nonetheless, that someone would care enough to try and make them pretty.

History

Aspen is a discarded project by an impatient woodworker who used life-giving magic carelessly. They were brought to life before they were finished, only a rough, deer-like shape, with no eyes, no mouth, and only vaguely shaped limbs. As a consequence, they are both blind and mute, and their movements are stiff and jittery.

They were discarded soon after being made, thrown on the scrap heap and forgotten. They tried to escape, but being blind and knowing nothing about the world means they couldn't get very far. They wandered for a while, but the weather and cold took a tool on their wooden body, too. They tried fixing themself up, but without the proper tools they had no chance. For a time, they wandered around helplessly, deeply lonely and unable to communicate what was wrong. People rarely listen to toys, especially mute ones.

Their life took a turn for the better when they met Magnolia, a beautiful, mastefully crafted doll who seemed to be as lonely as them. She took them in, and has been doing her best to provide them with the tools and knowledge they need to finish themself. Although they do not understand what she gains from staying with them, they are very grateful for her company, and slowly learning to enjoy life.

Info for Artists

Their design is pretty flexible! They are a wooden toy, vaguely deer-like, in varying stages of completion. They can be very rough and chipped or almost complete, sanded down and smooth. They have no eyes and no mouth, although they can have painted eyes.
They can also have various markings and designs painted on them (courtesy of Magnolia).

Various sprouts and greens are optional.
