About

An AU where Maverick's mother never left Angstrom!  Which becomes a problem once Maverick starts showing as a witch.  But she manages to keep it a secret and live a halfway normal life in this shithole of a country for nearly 5 solid decades.

But then she like.  Sees a kid(Kenny) having trouble controlling her magic fuckery and HAS to get involved.  it's stressful but also fulfilling and nice, befriending Kenny and her father.  Unfortunately scrutiny is high in the area due to the rate of unusual occurrences and Mav gets found out and detained by the military (because that's just what they do with witches, in this land devoid of magic).

It's the nightmare scenario!  But at least Mav can take comfort in the assumption that nobody is snooping around the neighborhood looking for magic anymore(so Kenny & Gale can breathe easy).  But also it's not like she can ask them if shit's any better when she has no private way to contact them from inside witch jail. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

She enters her new reality with one goal: be as useless and uncooperative as possible.  She refuses to obey even benign commands unless she's physically forced into submission, she feigns total incompetence in her magical ability, she constantly heckles and disrespects her overseers.

It is all going pretty well until she's reassigned to a new overseer, Raeford.  Unlike the others she's encountered so far, who work nearly-exclusively with children and don't have the skills necessary to control an actively belligerent adult who doesn't give a fuck about their fake authority, Raeford is actually competent.

When threats/application of violence, withholding food, and locking her out in the cold fail to produce results he just gets more creative.  Through observation he figures out personalized means to force her obedience.  He sees her claustrophobia, he obtains a coffin and starts locking her in it for hours at a time.  He sees her softness around the kids, he starts punishing them for Mav's transgressions.

She starts complying.  She hates herself.

She clings to the one facet of her rebellion she has left: feigned incompetence.  There's no choice but to obey and keep her mouth shut, but if she can barely make a flame strong enough to light a cigarette all they can really do is make her practice more.

Raeford doesn't really buy her insistence that she never used her magic(especially considering they only found her in the first place because of a trail of Very Noticeable Magical Fuckery), but that's trickier to torture out of somebody so they're at an impasse until he can figure out how to do it without potentially killing someone (not that he has any real objects to that other than his superiors will be upset about wasting resources).

Personality & Outlook

Primarily angry.  Does her best to appear snarky and apathetic, but unfortunately she cares just, so much, about a lot of things.  Easy to read, has trouble schooling her reactions to things(I mean she's getting better but it's too late to really help her at this point).

Due to torture reasons, is kinda broken and becomes deader inside with every passing day, which seems like it would be good since it does further her desire to stop giving a shit, but actually it just sucks.  Feels very much like a watered-down version of herself.

Soft spot for kids, as with all Mavericks.

Powers & Assets

Force Mage
She has the same necromantic affinity as Default Maverick!  But definitely did not pursue it & just stuck to the move-shit-around facet of that.  Ideally she would have done no magic but A) it's handy af & B) witches tend to have compulsions.
• Casting philosophy is grounded in spite and determination (she doesn't know it since she's being pathetic on purpose but her casting ability has weakened in response to her situation).
• Lies about her affinity to her overseers, tells them she is fire-aligned

Relationships

child figure
Weird shit starts happening in the neighborhood!  Maverick investigates if only to keep the witch-jailers from snooping around.  Discovers Kenny stirring up trouble and puts a stop to it, then takes it upon herself to try & teach Kenny how to control herself.  Because this kid is severely lacking in self control.

potentially something
Kenny's father.  He's so fuckin scared of Kenny's magic shit & so grateful to have Maverick come into their life and sort it out for him.  Maverick sympathizes, feels bad about his position the same way she felt bad about making her mom's life more difficult w/ her own magic.  Anyways flirting happens, she feels like part of the family before shit hits the fan and spends a lot of time nowadays wondering about what could have been, hoping they're doing well.

life ruiner
Maverick hates him! So Much!  0/10 would love to murder with a brick!

another maverick
An agent of the rebellion.  She kinda thinks he's absolutely delusional but he's trying to help so she's polite about it.  Currently a plan to get her the fuck outta witch jail is in the works.  She wants to have faith but doesn't really.

Aesthetic

The potential of an unsupervised ember, the arsonist desperate to utilize it.  Restriction and persistent futility, a caged animal.

Modest clothing, smoke, dead eyes.

Appearance-wise, the key differences between her and other Mavs are a greyer complexion(obligatory angstromi trait), and that she is 0% physical corruption(most other mavs at least have their hands going wonky).

Trivia

• One of few Mavericks that actively has a pronoun preference. Still nb but is much more comfortable being perceived as femme.

• Smokes cigarettes, not an uncommon vice at all in Angstrom

• eventually changes her name to 'Avery', mainly because she knows too many alternate versions of herself and doesnt like the nickname they gave her to start with (Darkest).  Is still fine with being called Maverick/doesnt consider it to be a deadname

• Why can she walk around balls-cold angstrom in a thin dress & no shoes?  After being locked out in the cold by Raeford one-too-many-times,  Mav finagles a heating array that can tap into the charging port on her collar.  It's braided into her hair & keeps her nice & toasty (It's not SUPER stable, since she is limited to graphite shavings & scraps of cloth for materials, which do not stand up well to heat spells) (so she has to remake them fairly frequently).

• [self harm] Dysphoria was so bad she emasculated herself, which made her hate her body less but also makes anybody seeing her nude into An Ordeal

Q & A

Q: Prior to meeting Kenny (and getting caught for using magic), how often did she actually use magic throughout her life? Did she sometimes use it, subtly, or refrain from using it whatsoever? How hard is it to hide being a witch in Angstrom?

A: (ooc) The thing about people with inborn magic, is that they NEED to use it.  Not only is it bad for their mental health(it is a compulsive thing, if avoided long enough it'll just become all you can think about), it can be potentially very dangerous when your magic starts leaking out & making weird shit start happening around you(which is essentially what was going on with Kenny, she was holding it in but it kept bubbling up and setting shit on fire & blowing chunks out of brick walls).

Over the years Mav figures out a good balance to keep her from being found while not stifling it.  Her specialty is necromancy, but she leans more into the movement element of it.  So most of her magic use goes into stuff like moving furniture around, & other mundane tasks where the ability to move things without physical exertion is handy & very hideable(she lives alone).

The level of difficulty hiding varies?  But it's hard to notice magic happening unless you witness it happening.  The magical fields in Angstrom are incredibly stagnant, and remnant energy from casting dissipates very quickly, so even people with the ability to sense magical fluctuations can't really pick someone out unless they're actively casting(or if their aura is just crazy unstable).  Also like 99% of witches get found as children, so once you hit a certain age nobody thinks to suspect you.  They don't even bother testing for it since magic awakening tends to be very obvious, and even if you manage not to out yourself publicly while you're still trying to get a handle on it the public generally only knows enough about magic to be afraid of it so most people figure it's better to just send your child off to the government for everyone's safety.

Maverick had an advantage growing up in that, her mother was prepared for the possibility that magic might happen!  Her dad was a witch so the chances were decent.  I mean her mom didn't know MUCH about magic, but she knew enough to not panic about it.
