Personality

"It's the logical conclusion."

Floyde is much more than he might seem on the surface… personality wise, that is. He’s far more benevalant than one might expect, however he’s not great at getting that across. Due to him being rather emotionally detached, it’s hard to tell he really does care for people around him, especially those he’s taken an interest in. Through his serious, dignified way he likes to carry himself (through… words that is), one might not get the impression he’s exactly as nice as he tries to be, but at least he is clearly very respectful of those around him… Sort of. He may speak in a very formal and respectful way, but has no sense of personal space, and his curiosity knows no bounds. If the man can get up close and personal without getting slugged in the face, he will- especially with more strange and mysterious pokemon. All that curiosity lends into just how observant Floyde is of the people and space around him. Even if he can’t really make out how to treat his peers emotionally, he does pick up on small quirks they make, what triggers an emotional reaction, what’s in and around him at any time, etc. He’s always working to better approach or avoid problems in the future, epsehsally in friendships, so even if he doesn’t know how to always treat someone without being told, he will be keen on avoiding the things that caused a negative reaction. It’s the same thing with any invention he makes, Floyde is extremely Innovative, always looking towards the future of technology. He’s very good at working with little to nothing to build whatever he might need in any given situation. Even if it’s not exactly an invention he needs, he can still work well with the space around him, making him great when in a tight spot on missions.

Less positive, Floyde is very… very direct. The man will speak his mind in any situation he sees fit, not always able to read the room before he says what he thinks. This can be good for some people… and well, bad for others, if you can imagine, he’s not one to soften his words or play nice for others. Despite that… Floyde is a bit of an enigma, he’s hard to read or understand at times, and in an unintentionally secretive man, opting to never really speak about himself if asked. His thought process tents to be rather fast and hard to follow, particularly when it comes to his inventions, they don’t always follow the line of logic some might expect from him. All of this then leads into how much of a big-thinker he is. Floyde has trouble with thinking small/simple, everything has to have a much more extravagant explanation than in reality it really does. This shows through in dungeons, where situations might have a simple solution he tents to over complicate things. In some regards this can be good, as he’s almost always mentally prepared for things to get extreme, but it can get irritating when it comes to just trying to get from point A to point B.

And then it's mostly downhill from here… This man is very careless, not of his peers, but of himself and safety. Although he is very observant and tends to overthink things, one thing he always ends up leaving out is safety precautions in more situations than not. He’s impatient and tends to just jump the gun on things, wanting to get straight to the building or the testing or just doing something, completely shrugging off the safety of himself, and sometimes others. It doesn’t help that the mans also very one-sided, and even a bit vain. When it comes to arguments or disagreements, if the topic is something he is confident in- he won’t budge. It’s obnoxiously clear that he believes he’s smarter than the mon around him, and if you can’t create an argument that Sounds “smarter” than his, he may even flat out ignore the other person. The only way to really get through to him is to Show him that he’s wrong, and in most cases if the proof is there- he will begrudgingly admit that he was wrong. In general he is just tactless when it comes to understanding other mons emotions and thought process. Coming back around, he struggles with connecting emotionally with his peers… It is very easy for him to hurt their feelings or scare them unintentionally and often takes being told to truly grasp how they might be feeling. He is by no means malicious, but he can be careless and neglects to think about what the mon around him might be affected. This is something that becomes easier the better he gets to know someone at least, especially those who are willing to explain and tell him straight up how they feel and what they need. Finally… Floyde is very morally ambiguous… He tents to keep “the greater good” in mind with everything he does. Over his life span he has become a bit less amoral, however that doesn’t mean the line of thought is gone. This line of thinking has lost him jobs and a relationship with his father, and doesn’t help that he tends to strongly believe in his own opinions over the feelings of others. if its Logical over Moral he’s likely to believe it… Although he has moved away from believing things that could cost someone their life… mostly.

History / Personality Doc (easier to read)

Childhood - [0 - 8]

Emotionally there has always been a disconnect between Floyde and his family. Even as a baby, the yelling and arguing around him never bothered him, he adapted quickly. He was near oblivious to everything around him… and it made sense back then when he was just a child. He hardly batted an eye when he was just six and his parents told him he was going to have a baby sister. He hardly reacted when he was seven and his parents told him they were getting a divorce. Watching his father leave for Tincaster was like saying bye to him while being dropped off at kindergarten.

This odd lack of an ability to empathise with other people continued on into school. He always seemed to have a hard time forming genuine connections with other kids. He was quick to take to reading as a substitute and never seemed to mind. This didn’t mean he was heartless or cruel though, just that he couldn’t wrap his head around the way other people acted or reacted half the time. It wasn’t until jr high did this become an actual problem.

Teenage - [9 - 18]

Floyde’s 9 to 17 year old years were weird and busy ones. He was beginning to dip his hands into inventing after taking some metalwork classes and chemistry classes. It started out harmless enough, but after he started to scare other students with his strange hardly functional inventions, his mother was really beginning to notice a problem.

She’d only started to notice his emotional disconnect after her ex husband left. Despite how close he and his father seemed to be… he didn’t seem to grasp that he was leaving, even now. Looking back this behaviour was persistent through friendships and the like. In an attempt to help him better connect with others, she sent him off to stay in Tincaster with his father for the summer, and when he was home he had to go to youth groups.

All of these things made it difficult to keep up with what he wanted to do, that being studying and building. However, Floyde never seemed overly bothered by it, but it never quite changed his outlook on other people… he was nice, he did his best to understand, but he always had that disconnect…

While he was in Tincaster, he often picked up odd jobs (that he hated), until his dad picked him up a small job helping clean up around the hospital he worked at. Now that, ended up being Floydes favorite job. Although he wasn’t normally exposed to any real medical action for the most part, just being in the hospital and seeing small things first hand peeked his interest substantially. The more he seen around the hospital, the more he asked questions and for stories about his work. It was the closest he and his father have ever been.

And so that experienced greatly molded Floydes studies from then on… Shifting from engineering to biology and medical science. The world was vast and packed to the brim with so many different species of pokemon, it was like he had opened pandora's box, endless topics to read on! As he went through this phase though… he hit a rode block...

He adored biology… dissecting ferals in class, seeing how they tick… Reading studies, watching ferals in the wild. Did he want to be a doctor? Or did he want to know more about life itself? It was a dilemma he struggled with for the last few years of his grade schooling, and the time to start sending university applications was getting closer and closer.

It was the night he evolved he decided… He’d been cooped up in the basement, dissecting a dead Swinub he’d bought fresh from a market. Initially, he wanted to try fixing up the corpse and shocking the body with a tool he invented that was suppose to condense his own electricity into a steady, more powerful stream… He wanted to see if he could turn its brain back on, even if he knew the chances were slim to none. All he wanted was to see how its organs moved… how its body would react.

And then- the tool blew up and electrocuted him.

He evolved amongst all this chaos, at the age of 17, frazzled and loopy from the over charge of electricity. And that’s when it hit him…

The one legal job that could allow him to dissect something alive was, being a doctor… A surgeon, specifically.

Did he want to save lives? Well… Yes? It was a bonus, maybe not his priority- but hey! This was his real big chance to dip himself into a whole new world of science! Even if it came with limitations… (like the patient having a specific goal with their surgery)

Schooling - [18 - 25]

Nonetheless, applications were sent to universities shortly after he graduated, he got into one in Tincaster, and promptly moved! His sister also came along to start living with their Father. This was a nice time for Floyde, he was genuinely bonding with his family, it felt so different from living with his mom, he’d only now realized. Even so, he opted to live on Campus when the time came to begin school again, and thats where he stayed for the 7 years he studied to become a surgeon.

It was a long haul, but he didn’t mind. Sitting in on operations and lectures were a welcome use of his time, and with what spare time he did have, he often dug into more engineering books and took on new small projects.

Overall, university was a peaceful time for him, he even managed to make a friend. Sylvester Graves, a Combee who started over in the nursing unit just a few years after Floyde began his own schooling. He was the first person Floyde ever genuinely clicked with, and openly spoke about his goals and intentions. The bug didn’t morally agree with where he was coming from, but didn’t pull away either, so long as he didn’t intend on hurting anyone.

By the time graduation rolled around, Floyde was itching to begin his real work. Years he’d studied to have his hands inside a living body… he wanted to see first Hand. There were so many occasions he’d wished head surgeons would of moved something or cut something different… and now he wouldn’t have to worry about that anymore...

Adulthood - [25 - 30]

And well, this didn’t work out great for him, as you might expect. Two years into his new work, Floyde lost his license for an instance involving a steelix and a home-made needle drill, and well, a few other strikes for safety violations. He was out of a job so suddenly, so many years dedicated to his craft, and now he was 27 and jobless…

It didn’t get him down for long though! Temporarily he’d moved back in with his father and little sister, opting to start working underground instead! And well, this also didn’t go over well.

He managed to pull it off for a year before his father found out exactly What he was doing during his phase of unemployment. Floyde was honestly shocked when his father didn’t report him… He was doing dangerous work for people who couldn’t afford real medical help or for people who couldn’t be seen, and though he was very much breaking the law- his father just… didn’t have it in him to report him… thinking he was just trying to find some form of work in a field he studied for so long.

He was kicked out though.

Floyde’s little sister never did find out about any of this, it was a secret between him and his father… And so to avoid steering any more drama, he decided it was best if he moved. The only person he kept updated about his move was Sylvester, as they’d been frequently hanging out all these years anyways, he couldn’t just leave without notice. Strident was his city of choice, and that immediately struck a cord with Sylvester, as he was from Strident and was looking to move back.

Over time the two put together their plans, and money and promptly moved all the way to Emerald and up a mountain, buying themselves a small smack slightly out of the main city. During the days Sylvester worked, while Floyde whittled away at his own personal research. To make money he’d do his best to keep his savings full and take part time jobs around the city.

His main project was similar to one he performed when he was very young, building a tool that could shoot a condensed stream of electricity into something. The madman's plan was to use a lightning strike, Strident having a lot of those after all all to potentially bring a feral Zigzagoon back to life.

The night he turned 30 was the night his invention was complete… At this point, it was beyond just wanting to dissect a living feral, he’d cut open living people already, somehow this was much more complicated than that. He wanted to restart its heart after hours of being dead…

He’d only been half keeping Sylvester up with exactly what this plan was. The combee never really cared so long as no one was getting hurt, and their contradicting schedules didn’t give them a lot of free time to chat.

Night fall hit and it was finally time for him to test his invention! He had everything set up except for one thing, he needed to power up his contraption… however something was off. It wouldn’t start? Figuring there must of been something wrong with the generator, he and Sylvester headed downstairs to check…

And then everything went white, then black.

When he came to, his ears were ringing and whole body hurt… voices around him… bright lights. The electric type was in and out for two days before he fully regained consciousness… and he was told everything. There was a family of voltorbs living in his generator room, presumably feeding off the electric energy, and when he went in the room he must of spooked them into exploding, and it destroyed his arm and eye in the rubble, and.. Sylvester.

For the first time in his life, Floyde was… floored. He felt genuine… dread? His right arm- his best friend? He was a man that was so numb to these things… he never thought they could happen to him…? For a week he hardly spoke, only thought about… everything. It put so much into perspective…

Maybe he did want to save people.

He’d never lost someone before… felt so hopeless.. It was a feeling he wished on no one. It was a wake up call he wish he had years ago…

In spite of his losses however, Floyde wasn’t one to sit still. Once the man was let out of the hospital, he put together a new “look” to hide his new injuries, gathered what money he had and made his way down to Tincaster. He needed a new arm, and in his condition, it’d take Years for him to probably learn how to And put one together, let alone have it be well done. So, knowing Tincaster had plenty of prosthetic engineers, it was his best option. Eventually he found himself a talented Zoroark who was willing to hear out his wild ideas for his prosthetic, until they nailed down a good design.

During this time, he was forced to seek out his little sister for a place to stay. She was more than happy to oblige, seeing as he… really didn’t look ok…. Those few months together were nice though. Even if Floyde spent most of it studying and trying to figure out his next projects and where to find work, being around someone was something he desperately needed.

Finally, his arm was complete though. Having it attached, seeing how it worked, it sparked new energy into the scientist! He felt like he was ready to head back to Strident and continue his work!

Disaster - [30]

However.. Things wouldn’t be so easy.

The disaster struck, and dear god it was like nothing he’d ever seen before. Floyde was with his sister when it hit, the two of them finding cover in her cellar when things got nosibly bad. Being as curious as Floyde was… and… not having a great sense of danger, hours in he couldn’t help but leave the cellar to see what was happening.

The house was damaged, windows broken- but it was all still intact for the most part. Looking out into the sky… he seen gods duking it out before his eyes. He never put much thought into the existence of gods, if anything he thought they were a cheap manipulation tactic… But now…? Before his eyes? Even he was speechless. It was then, when he was completely enamored by the chaotic beauty of the otherworldly war being waged in the sky above him- a rock flew through the window and knocked him square in the eye.

Post Disaster - [30 - 32]

Ringing… muffled sounds… he’d been knocked out again? He’d fainted during the storm after being hit in the face and was in and out of consciousness throughout the rest of it. When he came to his sister was tending to his damaged eye in the cellar, she dragged him back down there…

Once he could see a doctor, he was properly taken care of, however his right eye was damaged and he was going to need thicker glasses if he wanted to be able to kind of see through it. After that, he took to helping out around Tincaster, eventually getting his new glasses, and gathering any information he could about the night of the disaster. He’d never felt so… frazzled yet excited..! Gods meant so much MORE for their small world… ! Who knew what power they could bring.

As some level of normalcy began to wash over the region again, Floyde eventually made his move back to Strident. He had unfinished busyness to tend to in the city, like re-building his old home. That’s when he first seen the Everstone Guild in passing… Some kind of rescue mission for the Strident guild? He’d been hearing about these guilds for some time… though he had his own plans still… and a lot of research to be done.

For the next two years the man practically lived in the remains of a shack. He only had the funds to build half the old home, but it was enough for just himself. He build himself an all new pair of goggles, using the lenses from his glasses to help him with work, and he modified his prosthetic arm to help him use his moves. His inventions didn’t quite go anywhere however- not anything big at least. Most things he built were small, like an “electric fence” around his home- that didn’t quite work,,, (he tried charging it himself- it only attracted new ferals), and some other small things along those lines.

While doing all this he took up a job at the local library, lowkey doing some extra reading on legendary pokemon and the history of legendaries… there was so much he had on his mind, he couldn’t stop digging for more and more knowledge! And god… with the growing void outside Strident? There was so much he Had to know….

But no answers ever turned up…

Not until Everstone came out with secrets they’d been keeping from the region- “Time Gears” and “Space Plates”.... This was the first thing that peaked his interest, however it wasn’t enough to make him apply……. he didn’t have the money to afford the move... That is… until Strident had to evacuate. Normally, he would of ended up staying with the remains of the Strident citizens, but the pink moon before the first evacuation left his home in ruins… Damn Mainetric tore it apart. With nowhere else to go, he joined the travel group headed by the Strident and Everstone guilds and made his way to his new home… Everstone City.

It wasn’t quite his scene, but it was something. He was able to get a small apartment when he first moved down, still not convinced the Everstone Guild was work up his ally yet… He managed to get another library job, and did the same thing all over again: more lowkey research on work hours. Things continued like this until…. until…

The bombing… He didn’t attend the Guild Games that year, but… he heard everything over the radio- the chaos, the explosions- every time a feed was cut he jumped to the next. But more than anything… that speech caught his attention the most… It was like secrets were being dangled in his face- this cult knew something- something deeper they were hiding from everyone else- they HAD to be… Otherwise it was just some cultist power grab, and god the thought of that just pissed him off even more.

It was the kick he needed to finally apply… He needed to know more, he needed to see things first hand. He NEEDED to KNOW what THEY KNEW.
