Gekko to Sakonji Urokodaki, Episode 4

Gekko Daikan (大鑑 月光 Daikan Gekkō) is a Monk and Demon Slayer in the Demon Slaying Corps. He was also the Tsuguko of the Stone Pillar, Gyomei Himejima. Gekko is later inaugurated as the Crystal Pillar soon after Tengen Uzui's retirement from the Demon Slayer Corps in the aftermath of the Red Light District Arc.

Appearance

Gekko is a young man of average stature with a fairly toned figure and fair peach skin, mostly hidden underneath all of his clothing. He has a remarkably feminine face with slanted eyes that gradient from purple to pink, framed by a thick array of eyelashes. At the corner of his left eye is a beauty mark. Gekko's long pink hair gradients into cream at the tips, and is styled with thick clumps of hair framing his face and two long sections of hair that are untied, resting over his chest area. The rest of his hair is tied into two low buns, ending with a long ponytail. His hair is adorned with wisteria flowers.

A notable trait of Gekko are his monk's robes whose style is modified to suit the uniform of the Demon Slayer Corps better, and his black kasa. He wears the standard uniform with the hakama untied at the calves. Over his uniform, he wears a plain black haori with periwinkle insides, and the whole outfit is held together by his decorative purple kesa, adorned with a bishamon kikko pattern, dark purple waves with gold lining and scattered lotus patterns. The kesa is further secured with the Demon Slayer Corps Uniform's belt. Around his neck and sleeves are beaded accessories, presumably made of moonstone. His footwear consists of black tabi and geta sandals.

Personality

Befitting of his appearance, Gekko is a gentle and empathic individual, always speaking with a kind voice and careful to not startle anyone with sudden movement or rude comment. Regardless of the individual, Gekko remains a very calm and collected demeanor, and is never really one to wait for conversation. He is also shown to be particularly spiritual, rather than religious.

Gekko is very in touch with others emotions as a result of his natural empathy and heightened intuition, being able to discern anyone's discomfort and act on it. While it is assumed Gekko only does this out of duty, he is actually genuine and well meaning, sometimes even pushing others to open up. Gekko always extends himself to others at the cost of himself, a trait that his master and peers have criticized him for. Another trait of his that is often put up to scrutiny is his pity towards demons, still opting to pray after he has killed them rather than just leave them to burn. Gekko firmly holds the fact that demons were once humans with himself at all times, and ensures that when he kills them, he will not give in to sadistic fantasies and habits. His softness has earned him harsh criticism from other Demon Slayers, including the Pillars.

Underneath all his softness and kindness is a very secretive side of Gekko. While he is always encouraging others to open up and help them, he himself is not open, and would rather be silent about his own honest feelings. Gekko knows his own feelings, but does not outright show them unless pushed. He will sugarcoat his opinions he believes to be harsh in an attempt to spare others of hard feelings, coming from a place of belief that it's not his place to give people the harsh truth. However; Gekko is not devoid of slip-ups, as feelings like frustration, melancholy and spite have peeked out on certain interactions with some individuals. People with good perception and an equal level of empathy, such as Tanjiro Kamado, will be able to discern Gekko's secrecy about his opinions, thoughts and feelings. When it comes to speaking of his own feelings, Gekko is put on the spot, not knowing how to truly express and finds it easier to be able to channel another's emotions through himself. He is unaware of his own emotional repression.

Despite all these things, Gekko has a good heart and is earnest in his work. Others have found him to be trustworthy and a person anyone can lend an ear to. This is not a compensation for loneliness, as he says. Instead, he mentions that it's quite obvious that there needs to be someone who can be there for those who don't have anybody, another trait of his that is both admired and criticized for it's martyr-like characteristics.

Gekko, in spite of his emotional repression, can easily find himself losing composure in comical situations; often having to turn back or run off somewhere to keep from laughing at the situation. It's due to such comical situations, especially when in the presence of Tanjiro and his companions, that allowe Gekko to naturally express himself more honestly, even if just by a small amount.

Abilities and Powers

Natural Abilities

  • Heightened Empathy and Intuition: Gekko's natural ability as a result of his spiritual nature. He is able to feel the vibrations of living things and feel the energy of others, being able to discern even their slightest feelings. This is likely manifested by touch, as he describes the feeling to start very strongly at his fingertips and simply course through his whole body.
  • Swordsmanship: As a member of the Demon Slaying Corps, Gekko is expected to have excellent swordsmanship. While it is noted that even when he was still nowhere near the level a Pillar should be, he has finely crafted technique and fluid movement.
  • Enhanced Speed: A result of years of training, only further enhanced by his role as Tsuguko and eventual Pillar, Gekko has incredible speed that makes it difficult for demons to process an attack before he closes in on them.
  • Immense Endurance: Gekko's Breath Style coupled with Gyomei Himejima's training immensely enhances his endurance. Despite his supposedly frail appearance, he is shown to barely flinch, if at all, when hit by other humans in hand-to hand combat as well as recover well after a demon throws him off.
  • Total Concentration Breathing: Being a Tsuguko (later Pillar), it is expected that Gekko is in a constant state of Total Concentration Breathing, allowing better mobility and sensory functions. Gekko's Total Concentration Breathing has a sort of boosting side effect to his already heightened empathy.
  • Demon Slayer Mark: During the battle with the Upper Moons Gyokko and Hantengu, Gekko was able to awaken to his own Demon Slayer Mark. His Demon Slayer Mark appears as lavender vein-like striations over his cheeks and hands.Gekko's Slayer Mark greatly increases his speed, endurance and mental state in particular: being able to feel the surrounding energies with much more sensitivity and read the energies to act accordingly.

Swordsmanship

Breath of Crystal (結晶 の 呼吸 / Kesshō no kokyū ):

The Breath of Crystal is a personal breath style developed by Gekko Daikan. It is derived from the Breath of Stone. The Breath Style consists of fast, fluid movements that can only be successfully performed by Gekko. The Breath of Crystal has a notable focus on footing and specific stance that allows for the perfect execution of these moves. A notable trait of this breath style are demons who fall victim to these become tranquil, feeling peace rather than excruciating pain. The Breath Style focuses more on single strike to double strike techniques and are really meant to immediately behead demons. Interestingly enough, Gekko has developed this style to be utilized with the accompaniment of a wakizashi.

History

Gekko's familial background is actually unknown. He was left at the foot of a temple as a baby, whose monks took him in and named him Gekko, as he was left at the temple on a Full Moon. From childhood, Gekko was raised as a monk in training, to continue the Buddhist tradition in a time where the religion was being pushed into the margins of society for its association with the shogunate. He grew up faithful and spiritual, being keen and in tune with the life force and energies around him, feeling them as vibrations that started as sensations in his fingers. Encouraged to hone these, the monks who raised him considered his natural ability as a gift.

The temple he was raised in was considered a safe haven. The temple was surrounded by wisteria trees and thus repelled demons. Gekko grew up emotionally tending to the people who sought refuge in the area, hearing stories about the demons that lurked outside at night. Oftentimes, the monks at the temple he lived in did funeral rites for those who were killed, but not fully devoured by demons. From an early age, Gekko has been used to seeing the gore and brutality brought unto humans.

Due to an increase of casualties and people seeking refuge in the temple, Gekko had asked the monks, his family, if there were any people in the world who fought these demons. Naturally, the Demon Slayer Corps was the answer, yet Gekko wondered why the monks at the temple didn't take initiative and become Slayers when they had the chance. It was a childish notion and misunderstanding, coming from a child himself. While he was answered with the lifestyle of the Demon Slaying Corps as not fitting their way of life and practice as well as there being other ways to help people, the child Gekko did not sit well with just being there, tending to the already traumatized and damaged.

It was soon after that he ran off in order to find a way to join the Demon Slaying Corps when he was only 12 years of age. He left a latter to the monks, thanking them for all that they have taught him, and that in time, he will return. Being mistaken to be a child of the streets, also misconstrued to be disturbed by the people he's interacted with, Gekko was taken in by a local doctor, a retired Slayer. Due to Gekko's determination as a child, and sensing an innate ability in him after having his true feelings and intentions brought to light in numerous occasions, the retired Slayer agreed to take him in as a student.

Gekko was trained in the Breath of Stone; and due to his religious practice and spirituality, was able to settle in the mindset as well as breathing. Despite his busy training, Gekko always found time to pray and practice his belief at the nearby temple, continuing his learning. His master has originally doubted Gekko due to his softening demeanor, but as he passed the final test that determines his participation in the Final Selection, the retired Slayer was given no choice but to let him go. His practice made learning the Breath Style fairly manageable, and during his Final Selection, developed his own breathing style, the Breath of Crystal.

Gekko's rise in the ranks was gradual, but he showed a steadily increasing performance althroughout. At the age of 17, he came across an abandoned temple near Headquarters, and personally tended to the place himself, which led to it becoming a safe haven as his old temple was. His activity in mentally healing was recognized by the Demon Slayer Corps, which had then contributed to the betterment of the place and planting numerous wisteria trees all around the area. In the same year, Gekko was taken in by Gyomei Himejima as his Tsuguko, coming from similar belief, practice and Breath Style. Gekko's rank as well reflected Gyomei's decision in taking him in as Tsuguko.

Trivia

  • Well, this is the Taisho Era and I can't make witches, so go with a spiritual person and toss my aesthetic to them. Simple!
  • Gekko's specific rank within the Demon Slayer Corps is unknown, but it can be assumed that due to his years of experience within the organization, his swordsmanship and his role as Tsuguko, that he holds a fairly high position.
  • Due to being Gyomei's Tsuguko and the two having a very close and amicable relationship, Gekko has in fact, interacted and befriended the rest of the Pillars.
  • He resides in a small temple near the Demon Slayer Corp Headquarters. He is known by other Slayers to give "healing" sessions through meditation and some form of energy healing similar to Reiki. The temple is also a safe haven for civilians and Slayers alike.
  • Gekko has a habit of covering his mouth when he mutters to himself. Tanjiro is the only other person who has picked this up aside from Gyomei and Giyu Tomioka.
  • Gekko strongly laments the quality of the more recent Mizunoto that had, in his opinion, passed the Final Selection by pure luck. When he hears of Tanjiro and his companions being particularly competent, he was pleased and had pushed the rest to try and set an example for other Mizunoto who are still alive.
  • Gekko is known to practice forms of divination outside of Buddhist practice, such as palm reading and oracle bones. He gets asked for these services on occasion.
  • The scabbard of Gekko's swords are very interesting, as the insides seem to be lined with the same material as Standing Bells or better known as Singing Bowls. The external design of his scabbard is decorated similarly to a singing bowl, also including the inscription of the Om Mani Padme Hum. It is because of this that it is said whenever Gekko draws his swords, his swords "sing".
  • According to Tanjiro, Gekko smells so strongly of wisteria that is sort of irritates his nose.
  • The Demon Slayer Corps refers to Gekko's temple as the Wisteria Temple, simply because numerous wisteria trees surround the area.
  • Gekko has a hidden stash of wagashi in his quarters. He often treats children and Slayers who come to the temple.
