Lots of people like to think that Lucien is putting up a front, that his very cold and aloof exterior is a way of protecting himself. Some people who have taken a shine to him like to make up romantic ideas that he was hurt once long ago and to protect himself from ever feeling misery again, he pushes people away. He's not acting, he's just a dick. Or maybe a dick is too harsh. Lucien is very cold and calculating, looking primarily at facts. Facts, he thinks, hold more weight then emotions do. Emotions are weird and confusing; people always say how they "know this feeling is bad, but" like that some how makes said emotions okay. He dislikes them because people like to hold that over hard facts, which just doesn't make sense to him. He wasn't hurt, he just feels that the logical side of things should be what matter more. It doesn't matter if your feelings were hurt, this is the truth. At the same time, he doesn't purposefully mean to be an asshole. He often times comes off as such because he keeps his distance, doesn't like participating in group activities, and will stare off into the distance when someone is talking to him. Listen, he doesn't really care about your spat with your boyfriend or what the higher ups are doing, but that doesn't mean he actively hates the people around him. It's more like he just doesn't care - indifference doesn't mean he hates anyone...he just doesn't like anyone either.
