When trying to taverse in severe weather, he and the caravan went into a bog on accident and got horrifically stuck. Panicking and trying to free the animals, the carts, the people, anything and anyone, the entire caravan was pulled under and succumbed to the cold and suffocation

Now you can find him as a spirit wandering along the rail road track paved near to the bog the accident happened in, with a lantern of will-o-wisps he's trapped and crippled serving as light as he guides mis-directed people back to safety
