Ricky Samuels grew up in rural Georgia working his father's farm, at a young age he showed a love for all animals large and small and a hatred for human kind.
After graduating high school, he sought a higher education to become a wildlife vet. He found a job at a wildlife rehabilitation facility that worked both with wild animals and rescued 'pets'. Occasionally he would also get called to local zoos.
Ricky is a man of very few words, he rarely speaks and he hates small talk.
"If you want to talk then talk about something that matters."

He found himself launched into WWII as a soldier, but shortly after was hit by shrapnel from a mortar shell. He and two friends were hit in fact.
One of them didn't make it, and the other was shipped home without a leg.
Ricky was the best off, and Richard jumped at the chance to have Ricky as his nurse.

When he got knocked down by that shell, a gold cross he'd warn for years cracks.
After finally being cleared by Rich to walk around again, he takes it and tosses it as far as he fuckin' can into a nearby creek.
He gets home, and his mother won't look him in the eyes, when she's not looking his father hugs him and tells him he can't stay here, but he does love him dearly.
Ricky calls Richard like he promised, and Rich tells him with the pull of some strings he can get Ricky a job at the same zoo he gave Sally (A flamingo they'd raised) to.
Ricky's siblings and father take him to the airport, where Richard surprises him and brings him back to Washington.
He's still a family friend to this day.
