Maxine lives with her father, Jay, in downtown New York City. She handles all the domestic responsibilities, such as housekeeping and shopping, when her father is not at home. The two have sort of a strained relationship; Jay rarely comes home during the week and when he does, he's usually sick or tired.

Max eventually became close friends with Melinda Diodato, who still tries to knock some sense into Jay Carter. Mel and Max have a mother-daughter kind of relationship.
