Profile
Gatekeeper of the Fountain of Eternal Youth
"My aim is the first seat of the Elite 10 council. I will not settle for anything less."
Kaori is one of the main characters in "Shokugeki no Kimiko". She is the daughter of Akira and Hisako, as well as Akio Hayama's little sister. Kaori is the valedictorian of the 115th Generation of Totsuki, a position that she takes a lot of pride in.
Ever since Kaori was a little girl, she had dreamed of the 1st seat in the Elite 10 council. She is firmly set on making that dream reality. Therefore, she studies and practices cooking day and night. A lot of people, specifically within her generation, admire her but Kaori does not have much time to spare for any chit-chat with her classmates.

Personality
Kaori is known, and admired, for her reserved and dignified demeanour. She has a very graceful way of moving and while distant, she is still very well-mannered. Combined with her immaculate skill, Kaori has a way of earning people's respect rather easily and it shows in how she is reverred by the majority of her classmates on Totsuki. Many would say, there is something "noble" about her.
While regarded as someone very admirable, Kaori is equally considered to be very unapproachable as well. Kaori herself does not have a lot of interest in interaction with her peers or potentially making friends. She puts a lot of distance between herself and others. Kaori can usually be spotted alone and avoids socialising at all cost. Whenever she does actually talk to people, she is very quick to the point. If her speaking partner happens to be someone Kaori dislikes, she can even show herself as a bit more snarky. When it comes to her fellow classmates 115h Generation, Kaori isn't too fond of any of them. She does not think too highly of her Generation and many of them appear as incompetent idiots to her.
What Kaori lacks in social life she makes up with ambition. She is very goal-oriented and ever since she is young, her goal is to become the 1st seat of Totsuki's Elite 10 council someday. For her there is only the top and nothing else. Things like the 2nd seat or, even worse, the 3rd seat aren't of interest to her. In fact, the thought of being anyone's number 2 greatly repels her.
She approaches her goal assertively and with a lot of dedication. Kaori is a through and through workaholic. Most of her time is spend either honing her cooking skills or studying for whatever else Totsuki demands from her. Kaori is very caught up in all of the workload she puts on herself and hardly allows herself many breaks. She barely ever relaxes. One of the few activities that allows her to calm down is gardening.
Being the busy bee that Kaori is, she is also very organised. Kaori has a very well-managed calendar which she faithfully follows. Naturally, she is not too fond of spontaneity and cannot stand any chaos being brought into her carefully thought-through schedule. She is almost a little fanatic when it comes to tidiness. Kaori is person who holds quite many pet-peeves and it is very easy to annoy her.
Kaori has high confidence in her skill and is not afraid to voice that confidence either. She also is not above flaunting her status as valedictorian to make herself out to be superior in front of her peers. People who work up the guts and try to actively challenge her usually get to see Kaori at her most haughty. She would never sink to the level of using low-brow profanity. Kaori is capable of telling people off in a classy manner.
Cooking
Kaori is specialized in Medicinal cuisine and considered to be a child-prodigy in that field. As she was taught mainly by her mother Hisako, Kaori possesses a lot of knowledge on Chinese medicine.
What Kaori's cooking is majorly known for is it's energizing effect. A common comment on Kaori's dishes is that they make the one who eats them "feel young again". Way back in her childhood, Kaori already earned her nickname "Gatekeeper of the Fountain of Eternal Youth", or "Youth Preserver" for short, as a reference to that gimmick her cooking has.

Story
Childhood
Kaori was raised by two hard-working parents who could not be around her all the time, but certainly always tried their best to be there. Kaori always admired them a whole lot and the older she grew, the more she got in touch with her parent's work and started helping Hisako organize the restaurant or help her father in the kitchen. Said father also introduced her to many high-ranking chefs or other important figures in the culinary business, who often got to have a taste of Kaori's cooking. She quickly gained the reputation of "being able to bring back youth" with her cooking.
Pre-"Shokugeki no Hiraku/Kimiko"
Kaori enrolls on Totsuki at the age that most student do. She steps into the school with her goal set on the first seat while also moving into the Shiomi Seminar to live there during Totsuki times.
"Shokugeki no Kimiko"
Kaori gets introduced as the valedictiorian of the 115th Generation as she enters the stage in the entrance ceremony for the new high schoolers to receive her badge. After Kimiko Yukihira gave her speech, she speaks to the new transfer backstage and asks her if she happens to be Hiraku Yukihira's sister. After Kimiko gives a "yes" as answer, Kaori basically tells her she doesn't cares about Hiraku's tongue and that the first place within Totsuki is reserved to her.
A few days later, Kaori finds out about the upcoming Shokugeki between Kimiko and Takayuki Hojo. She goes to watch the Shokugeki in the hope that Kimiko will loose and is disappointed when that is not the case.
She then gets to attend the Training Camp like everyone else in the first year of High School. On her first day Kaori gets into the class of Takumi Aldini, where she gives a splendid performance.
At a later time, during the Breakfast Challenge, Kaori ends up in the same hall as Kimiko. Said Kimiko shows up at Kaori's stand to tell her that she views the current task as a good opportunity to show Kaori what she is capable of. Kaori cooly replies that it will be the other way around. Once the judging begins the alluring fragranceof Kaori's dish as well as it's energising effect make it greatly popular and so she steals away almost all of the judges present in Hall A, making things a lot harder for Kimiko.
Trivia
"Kaori" means "fragrance". It was suggested by her mother Hisako and Akira loved the idea instantly, which made them decide on her name very quickly. Kaori's surname "Hayama" means "leaf mountain".
Being the passionate gardener that she is, Kaori loves all flowers. If she has to pick favorites though it would be lavender.
Ever since she's 7 years old, Kaori writes diary and continues to do so to this day. She has a large collection of full-written diaries already. It's something that she finds too embarassing to tell anyone however.
Kaori is known to make excellent coffee. If she wasn't a chef she would make an amazing barista.
One knack of Kaori's is that she buys too many mugs. The kitchens at the Shiomi Seminar are full of all kinds of cups which she just could not leave on the store's shelf. She is especially weak for porcelain ones.
It goes without saying that Kaori's favorite season is that in which everything grows and blooms: Spring!
Kaori has taught herself Chinese, starting when she was young. She also speaks English pretty well and takes up some French lessons over on Totsuki.
Given how overly organized Kaori is, she does have a digital calender on her phone and a handwritten one as well. Both are accurate to a tee.
Kaori majorly listens to R&B and Soul. At times she also turns into plain Jazz or Classic, mostly when she's working.
She is not too big on video games overall, but she does take some enjoyment in the Animal Crossing Franchise.
Related
Hisako Hayama
Kaori admires her mother and finds many things to bond over with her (like how important a calendar is to one's life for example). With Kaori being on Totsuki and Hisako having a heavy workload, it is not a given for them to see each other very frequently, so they both want to make the most out of it when they do. Kaori will take the time to sit down with her mother to watch one of Hisako's favorite movies with her. Hisako is very proud of Kaori and never fails to praise Kaori for her grades and such. But at the same time, she can't help but to worry over Kaori possibly overworking herself and does advice her to take a break once in a while.
Akira Hayama
Just like Kaori looks up to her mother, she also admires her father just as much and is always eager to hear some of his culinary advice. Akira is incredibly proud of his daughter and frequently brags about her to others. He loves how ambitious and determined she is and is very much ready to support her & her goals anytime and everywhere. This is why Akira is usually the first one to get any relevant news from Kaori whenever she achieved something that brings her one step closer to her end goal.
Akio Hayama
With their parents often gone, Akio and Kaori often only had one another to play games with and grew up to be very close. They used to share the same goal and motivated each other. Kaori always held a lot of admiration for her brother and was proud to call herself his little sister. However, after Akio had taken over the job as Hiraku Yukihira's assistance, Kaori has suddenly put a bit of distance between herself and her brother. She's disappointed and shocked over his decision, which shows in her avoiding him on school grounds. Akio can often only watch his sister stroll past him without a muscle in her face moving. The fact that his sister avoids him makes him incredibly sad. Sometimes he tries talking to her but usually something gets in the way. Akio moving into the Nakiri Mansion, does not makes things better as it results in evenmore distance between the two. Akio is worried about Kaori's lone wolf attidude and her overall bitternis. All he wants is to see her smile again.
Jun Shiomi
To Kaori, Jun has always been much of a grandmother-figure, which is why she calls her just that: "Granny Jun". Jun knows Kaori since she's a baby and has often taken care of her. Jun was also the one to spark Kaori's love for gardening by showing her around in her greenhouse of spices when Kaori was younger. Kaori loves Jun a lot and often goes to her for advice or comfort. When on Totsuki, Kaori lives with Jun and whenever she is not working on her studies or cooking, she attempts to assist Jun in her work. Jun loves Kaori a lot and is therefore also immensely worried over Kaori overworking herself, as well as her neglect of social interactions. As she gets to witness Kaori growing more and more bitter over time up close, she is probably the one who is the most worried about her and also often points her concerns out to her.
Kimiko Yukihira
Kaori and Kimiko's relationship did not start on a very good note. Kimiko got to meet Kaori after she gave her speech at the entrance ceremony on the first day of school. Kaori immediately asked if Kimiko is Hiraku's sister and after she got the confirmation, she went on to tell Kimiko that there is no way that Kaori will give up her current first place within the 115th Generation to her. Kaori generally seems to greatly dislike Kimiko, even showing up to Takayuki's Shokugeki against her to see her possibly getting defeated. She also acts more cold towards her than to the rest of the student-body. Kimiko is very confused by the hostility out of seemingly nowhere and thinks of Kaori as very strange. But she makes no attempt to get on Kaori's better side but rather aims to defeat the girl in a match, so she gets off her haughty throne.
Lola Nakiri
Lola and Kaori don't get to interact all too much, which is probably because Kaori actively avoids Lola. Lola finds herself some great entertainment in teasing Kaori and pulling the exact strings she has to pull in order to annoy Kaori. And she does that excellently. Kaori finds Lola an immense nuisance and usually hates every second of interacting with her.
Mona Nakiri
In comparison to Lola, Kaori finds Mona to be a lot more bearable and definitely prefers talking to her. But that's basically it. Kaori does not really know all too much about Mona and does not attempt to change that either. Mona on the other side would actually gladly like to become friends with Kaori but has no idea on how to approach her.
Hiraku Yukihira
Kaori dislikes Hiraku and makes sure to spent as little time as possible with him. She blames him for what her brother turned into after taking on this assistance job for Hiraku. For the very rare occasions that they do tak, Kaori usually only has snarls left for him. Hiraku is greatly confused by all of this but at the same time almost intrigued by it. He thinks of Kaori as an interesting persona who he'd like to know more about. Something about her refined nature combined with that immaculate skill and her intense ambition just draws him in.
