On first glance, outsiders will guess that Hotaru comes across as an over the top, outspoken trickster, however if they were to approach him things would quickly change. He is cunning, and is able to deal with strangers decently, despite having major social anxiety. A faker at heart, Hotaru's happy-go lucky persona may be false as well.

He has a decent amount of energy and will use it exploring places he's never been before. As with all Koma-Inu though he prefers to stick to higher places, looking down at the bustling city from above. Due to his strange choices of hang out spots, he is left with seldom running into other people or at the least, people who can see him.

He is protective over the people and things he likes and won't hold back if things get in his way. However if things get in his way too much, he will often lose sight of himself, and the repercussions his actions will cause, often regretting whatever he did in a fit of blind rage directly after. These feelings of regret often haunt him months, years later.

He is also quite clumsy, and if it weren't for the seemingly good luck that surrounds his species, he'd probably be dead ages ago.

Not much is known about Hotaru's past before he came to the Kanda Shrine. He keeps silent about it anyways.

One of the enshrined deities claimed they found him pretty beat up on the streets and took him in to help him get back to health. However Hotaru, who had woken up when the God was absent had attempted to take some of the food offerings the Shrine's patrons left and run with it. It wasn't long after that that he was found- the other yokai who worked at the shrine wanted him persecuted, for the crime he had commited. The God agreed, and took Hotaru Kotoshiro in as a servant instead, forcing him to serve under them few years at the main shrine as punishment

After his 'sentence' was up, he was given the offer of continuing to work for the God in exchange for keeping the city safe. He is one of many yokai patrolling the city's rooftops in an attempt to make sure everything and everyone stays in line.
