The Black Dragon, previously known as Fallon, is a corrupted dragon and the subject of the Black Magic project. They are a large, shapeshifting beast with a quadrupedal standard form that is only somewhat reminiscent of their past self. With their pure control of, abundance of, and knowledge of Soul, they are able to use a wide range of powerful magic. Despite the power they hold, they are mostly peaceful and prefer to stay isolated, almost exclusively using their magic to intimidate and scare off intruders on their island. Prior to their involvement with the Myna Kingdom, Fallon was a messenger and citizen of the United Districts.

The Black Dragon's current body is very unique to themself and a result of their corruption due to their past self's overexposure to Soul. They are an odd mixture between their past physical form and the magic they have been forced to take on as a part of themself, resulting in them being very fluid in form and prone to absurd amounts of change. The Black Dragon may shapeshift, most often giving themself more limbs when needed, although they tend to stick to their standard ambiguous form. In this form they are quadrupedal, standing on at least four legs (their front pair having five-toed talons and their hind pair having hooves) and having at least two arms with pointed elbows that blend into their back, the hands of which are usually resting on their shoulders. These hands have four digits each, one of which is a thumb, and white claws. They also have a pair of small feathered wings, the primaries and secondaries of which are white. From their shoulders, they have a long, curved neck that holds up their head, the shape of which is reminiscent of that of their past self, having three horn-like extensions that create a curved W-shaped outline. They have eight circular eyes arranged in the shape of a teardrop and two nostrils at the end of their somewhat curved 'beak.' While the Black Dragon sometimes holds the appearance of having clothes, these 'clothes' are in reality a part of their magic form and are part of their body. The collar they wore in their past form remains a part of their design, melded to their body with magic. Excess Soul in the form of spent magic leaks out constantly from within the Black Dragon, usually from underneath their collar, their mouth (much like a dragon's smoke), and around their tail. This Soul leaks at a slow and steady rate, swirling about passively as it disappears. When the Black Dragon uses magic, this Soul leaks at a faster pace, appearing larger and more aggressive. Its behavior and pace may also change depending on the Black Dragon's mood. Their body is completely black, sporting a few darker stripes that are only visible in direct sunlight.

Partially Corrupted

Before the Black Dragon's corruption got out of control, their form appeared much more like that of their past self. They had large wings (the primaries and secondaries of which were black), four limbs (their front pair having three-toed talons and pointed elbows and their hind pair having hooves), a long tail, more feathers overall, a more dragon-like head, two thin eyes, and a teardrop-shaped marking on their face. Soul only leaked from their mouth and tail, and their collar had not yet melded to their body.

Stable

Before Fallon had been exposed to the Soul on Tayieg, their form was that of a typical feathered dragon. They had a short coat of black feathers; large, black wings; and a long, thin tail. Unlike their later forms, their back legs were not hooved. Their face shape was significantly different, having protruding jawbones, one small horn, and two tall ears. They wore a black collar with the white chevron insignia of their home kingdom and two white leather cuffs. In the same fashion as their corrupted forms, their body was completely black, sporting a few darker stripes that were only visible in direct sunlight.

Design Notes

• In their fully corrupted form, the Black Dragon is able to shapeshift. It isn't necessary to keep them to their standard form and their design is intentionally very fluid, so feel free to change aspects of their design and don't worry about getting it wrong. It is also not necessary to use the particular shades of black and white listed—play around with it!
• Their markings are NOT visible under most circumstances. They can only be seen under direct sunlight and are very faint in the first place. Please feel free to use only one shade of black for their body; drawing them using two shades of black is entirely optional and should be limited to only a few certain scenic situations.
• Their wings in their fully corrupted form are incapable of flight; however, they may shapeshift larger wings that can support their (relatively light) weight.
• The progression of their changes due to corruption are as follows:
  • Stable to Partially Corrupted: Their face shape changes, merging their ears and curved jawbones and omitting any dark markings. Their forehead becomes more sloped and their beak more curved. A white teardrop marking becomes present on their forehead. Their eyes become longer and thinner and their brows become much less prominent. Magic leaks from their mouth. Their neck becomes thinner and the feathers near their head and shoulders become longer. The elbows of their front legs form sharp protrusions. They lose one toe on each front talon and their hind talons morph into hooves. The feathers on their back are elongated and now stand up like a frightened cat's fur. Their ribbon-like tail is covered in a thick coat of feathers, and magic starts leaking from above it. Overall, they become taller and larger. Prior to experimentation, they stopped wearing their signature leather cuffs but kept their collar.
  • Partially Corrupted to Fully Corrupted: Their face shape changes further, creating much more rigid and curved horn-like extensions. Their teardrop-shaped marking disappears and their two eyes are replaced by eight in the shape of a teardrop. The magic leaking from their mouth increases in volume. Their neck becomes thinner and more curved and merges with their collar. Many of their elongated feathers are lost as they shift into a much more fluid matter. Their front legs become smaller and are moved upwards, where they rest against their back as their hands rest on their shoulders. These arms blend into their back when not in use. A new set of front legs is grown, the talons of which have five toes each. Their wings become much smaller and their primaries and secondaries glow white with fluid magic. Their wing coverts gain markings. The magic leaking from above their tail envelopes and merges with their tail, creating a long stream of magic.

The Black Dragon's overexposure to Soul has had negative effects on their mind, depricating their sapience and self-awareness to a noticeable degree. Despite the amount of Soul within a creature usually being indicative of its sapience, the Black Dragon is an exception due to the absurd amount of Soul they possess, which has accumulated far past the point of being manageable. The Soul within them has caused their mind to degrade and become more clouded with excess thoughts, leaving them little room to hold distinct thoughts or emotions. They do not have clear thoughts but rather garbled, overlapping messes of nonsensical ones and cannot speak normally, usually making animal-like noises such as roars or very broken, overlapping speech from which only a few words may be able to be recognized. Depending on who you ask, they are no longer considered to be a 'person' but rather a beast or animal. The pronouns used to refer to them (they/them, their actual pronouns, or it/its, used by those who do not view them as a person) may reflect one's views of their intelligence.

On Tayieg

Following the completed events of the Black Magic project, the Black Dragon has made residence on the island of Tayieg. They are one of very few originally sapient creatures currently residing there. With the concern of others' safety in mind, they track down and attempt to ward off any wanderers lest they fall to the same fate and eventually die, a task they are most often able to accomplish with ease. They may attempt to frighten or confuse others until they leave but do not have ill intent and never choose to cause harm to them.

Skillset

• Enlightenment: The Black Dragon has attained the purest and most adept form of the control of Soul. They have formed a connection with it, enabling them to take it in from their surroundings and cast most magic with incredible ease. Additionally, despite their corruption, they are unable to be killed by the presence of what would normally be enough Soul to do so. Because they are enlightened, all magic they use is white in color.

Learned Abilities

• Shapeshifting: The Black Dragon is able to shapeshift and change their form however they like. While they are perfectly capable of shifting into drastically different forms, they tend to stick to their standard form, using shapeshifting mostly for the purpose of generating extra limbs or otherwise making minor, temporary adjustments. When shapeshifting, they typically only change into forms of similar size, as due to the amount of Soul they possess (the reason for their abnormally large standard form in the first place), smaller forms are more difficult to maintain for them.
• Reality Warping: A form of magic the Black Dragon is particularly fond of using is warping reality in any way. They will often alter their surroundings out of boredom or to drive away intruders. They may temporarily alter gravity, physics, colors, light, physical objects, or anything else on their island, sometimes making for bizarre psychedelic or dream-like scenes.

Lily

Fallon met Lily while they were both young adults. Lily was attending an international assembly when Fallon arrived with a message for the ruler of their kingdom, the United Districts, and they caught her eye. After approaching and talking to them, Bladewing in tow, they quickly became friends. They began meeting with the two of them regularly, most often at further international assemblies, and—despite Fallon's much more reserved personality—tagged along on many of the couple's chaotic adventures. Collectively, the three were quite close, though Fallon tended to feel sidelined at times due to Lily and Bladewing's budding relationship. The death of Lily's parents and her sister's ascension of the Myna Kingdom throne later caused a rift between the trio, and while Fallon made an effort to keep in touch with Lily, the two eventually fell apart. After Lily's ascension of the throne, the two did not contact each other again until Lily reached out in desperation regarding the Black Magic project and Fallon agreed to participate.

Bladewing

Fallon has known Bladewing for as long as they've known Lily, though they were never quite as close with her as they were with Lily. Fallon consistently put in an effort to become closer with Bladewing, but was often put second by her in favor of her relationship with, and need for attention from, Lily. Following the death of Lily's parents, the two have hardly talked.

Other Corrupted Creatures on Tayieg

While the Black Dragon does their best to drive away wanderers on Tayieg for their own safety, they do not always succeed before they succumb to the effects of the large amounts of Soul on the island. While any other creatures on the island are corrupted but not yet deceased, the Black Dragon is hospitable and friendly towards them, though they mind their own business most of the time.

• The Black Dragon was created on December 26, 2019, almost five years after the story which they belong to of the same name was created. In earlier drafts of the story, an alias of Lily named "Midnight" (and later "Hesperus") held the title of "the black dragon."
