Mala's Links
Mala dislikes Birch's traditional, superstitious beliefs, but she understands why he believes that. She is as polite to him as she can be, and hopes to one day win his and the other townmembers' trust and respect.
Birch is quite wary around Mala. She is a creature that follows death, and her extensive time spent in that realm is unnatural. He fears that she will bring death to his home. Though he is certainly not outright against her, (he will nod politely if he comes across her) there is tensity between the two.
Mala doesn't mind Fiish's skittishness around her. She tries to be polite and understanding and knows that he does his best. In fact, she finds herself somewhat fond of the guy, and isn't sure why others don't understand him, as she has easily gotten the hang of his halted, bilingual speech.
Fiish is quite unsettled by Mala. He believes some of the rumors and stories he hears about her and is simply nervous about her somber, seclusive attitude. He still tries to be polite if he comes across her; he doesn't dislike her, he just isn't comfortable around her.
Mala doesn't mind Jade's attitude towards her; that's understandable. However, she isn't fond of Jade's breath vapor. The calming, sleep-inducing mist that she can create is unnatural in Mala's mind, and she isn't comfortable with the effect it has on the other villagers. She usually steers away from the kangoo.
Jade doesn't quite understand what the deal is with Mala, but since so many others are uncomfortable around her she feels the same way. She feels unnerved by Mala's strange quietness and her intense gaze.
