Character
History
Koa has been keeping the secret of the sky colours ever since his former mentor passed it on to him. By day, he is an alchemist, making paints for his best friend, the skypainter Jael. At night, he hunts the pigments by robbing museums: as a master thief with a flawless track record, he visits the galleries of the old masters to whisper the colours into his flasks, turning the paintings into greyscale. There's something about these old paintings that makes them special in ways that the sky children have been unable to reproduce themselves. Thanks to his history as a thief, he has known for some time that he is probably not a human. He tries to keep this secret from Jael at any cost.
Eventually, Jael discovers this secret, and their friendship suffers a severe blow. Why would Koa not be honest with his best friend? Jael stops painting the sky for a while, and the consequences are horrible. As a result, Koa feels extremely guilty and sets out to find a way to fix things - both with his best friend and on earth.
Pre-Death
In his former life on earth, he was the older brother of Bastian. His stepfather - Bastian's biological father - never liked Koa, as he was a reminder of his wife's previous marriage. The old man had severe anger issues, and Koa always tried to protect his baby brother. In one such attempt, his stepfather pushed him down two flights of stairs...
Post-Ending
Koa, upon losing his best friend and nightly career, is lost. But there is that detective on earth, Bastian, that seems faintly familiar, and he has come to enjoy their game of cat and mouse.
Jael
[ best friend ] He would do anything for Jael, and probably has, without Jael's knowledge. He wants to keep Jael's innocent view of the world intact, seeing this joyful boy is one of the rare reasons for Koa's smile.
Bastian
[ brother ] His little brother from his former life. Now, he's turned into the detective who swore to put this museum thief behind bars. Bastian has no memory of Koa, only a faint inkling that there used to be a comforting presence at home when he was a little boy.
Lucy
[ enemy ] She holds a grudge against Koa for stealing the colours of the painting she often goes to admire, as it reminds her of her deceased baby brother. Lucy becomes a hobby detective in order to chase Koa.
