Maho Shiraishi (白石 真帆 Shiraishi Maho) was a first-year student at Fukurōdani Academy and the girls volleyball team's starting setter. She is currently playing as a setter for the Japanese professional team Hatsumichi Springs. Contents [show]Maho is a girl of average height with fair skin. She has long, dirty blonde hair that she usually has tied up in some way. She is very picky about her hair, always having it look neat and styled if she can. She has violet eyes. She has glasses, but she doesn't like to be seen with them, so she normally wears contacts. She has been noted to be very pretty. She is very expressive, and it is not difficult to tell what she is feeling. She can often be seen with a confident smirk on her face. She can often be seen wearing her school uniform, which consists of a white dress shirt, a gray blazer, a blue striped bow, a black skirt, and black thigh-high socks. She always wears shorts under her skirt, a habit she picked up from Kaede. While playing for Fukurōdani, she wore a white, black, and yellow uniform with the number 11. During games, she wears black knee pads. She wears special supportive volleyball shoes that are black with white accents. Her casual clothes often consist of stylish and trendy clothes with a feminine style. She is known for her good fashion sense. Maho is known for her dramatic personality. Everything she does, she does with a theatrical flair. She doesn't get embarrassed easily. She acts very dignified and prideful, which can make her come across as arrogant. Because of her pride, she is very stubborn. She can act a bit spoiled, as she is used to getting what she wants. She is a good leader because of her natural charisma, which allows her to appeal to people's emotions and draw people in, but she can also be a bit bossy and controlling. This aspect of her personality can often get on people's nerves. She has a very strategic mind, and she is quick-witted. She is very concerned about what other people think of her, and she is obsessed with seeming perfect. This is why she hates for anyone to see her with messy hair or with her glasses. She hides any weakness, especially when it has to do with her injury. She is naturally talented at many things, especially volleyball. She was regarded as a prodigy as she grew up, but she wasn't satisfied with that. She wanted to be the best at what she did, so she worked very hard and practiced extensively. She is always determined to win, and she hates losing. When in games, her confidence and borderline arrogance is infuriating to her opponents. She is very confident in herself, so she is normally able to shake off small failures. However, she takes larger failures very hard, often blaming herself and getting frustrated. Maho grew up in the Miyagi prefecture. She was very close to her brother, Shōtarō, and she always followed him around and wanted to do whatever he did. When he began playing volleyball, she did too. She attended the same elementary school as Akita Midori. The two girls were good friends and used to play volleyball together. Right before their first year of junior high, Maho moved to Tokyo due to her family's flower shop being relocated. There, Maho attended Keisetsu Junior High, where she received intensive training on how to be a setter. While on Keisetsu's volleyball team, she met Isobe Kaede, who was only on the team for a year before graduating. During her second year of junior high, Maho was the starting setter for Keisetsu's team. During this year, she began to experience pain and tingling sensations in her feet. With a tournament approaching, she thought she had no time to be injured. She didn't tell anyone about her injury, and she played anyways. During the last set of the championship game, she lost feeling in her feet and collapsed. She was unable to play for the rest of the match, and she was taken to a doctor. She was told that due to overworking herself and enduring several rough landings, she sustained nerve damage in her feet. She was not allowed to play for a month. Even after that month, she had to slowly build back up to playing in games. By her third year, she was back to playing in games, and she was made the captain. Maho graduated from Keisetsu and enrolled for high school at Fukurōdani Academy, where her brother attended. She immediately joined the volleyball club. As a first-year, she was made the team's starting setter. She still experiences nerve pain in her feet, and she occasionally experiences tingling and numbness. She refuses to let it keep her from playing, and she rarely tells anyone about this pain. By her second year, she was the vice captain of the team, and in her third year, she was made the captain. In her third year, her team faced Niiyama Jōshi (Midori's team) in the finals of the spring tournament, narrowly losing in the last set. After losing, she told Midori that if she had her as one of her spikers, she would be unstoppable. After high school, she moved in with Akaashi. She tried out for the V.League Division 1 team, the Hatsumichi Springs, becoming the starting setter shortly after joining. Maho and Midori were a powerful combination, and the way they seemed to be able to communicate without speaking led to them becoming known as the "witch and her familiar" (魔女と使い魔 Majo to tsukaima). Maho is an incredibly talented setter, and she has been considered a prodigy from a young age. When she attended Keisetsu, she received training specific to the setter position. She has very accurate tosses that allow her to toss the ball almost anywhere on the court from almost any position. Her nickname, Witch (魔女 Majo), references that this ability seems like magic. She can also adapt her tosses to every spiker, tossing in a way that suits them best. She expects the most out of her spikers, not allowing them to slack in their jumps and approaches. She is noted to be a very aggressive setter, never letting her team's offense slow down. She can play a part in her team's attacks with her recent training in spiking. She is also a big point scorer because of her accurate jump serves, which allow her to target holes in a team's defense. She is always closely observing the other team, so she is able to come up with strategies to beat them. Overall, she is considered a very dangerous player. Jumping Reach: 272 cm Skills
"You're making that face. I know you blame yourself. It's not your fault. I chose to play even though I knew it was a bad idea. It's my fault. This is what I get for not being careful."
— to Shiraishi Shōtarō about her injury
"I just... feel like I'm doing something wrong. I look around at practice, and everyone is improving in leaps and bounds. I'm glad for them, but at the same time, I feel... sort of empty. I don't know how to describe it. I just... Everyone's getting better on their own, and I'm still just me. I'm stationary. I feel like soon they'll all overtake me, and I won't be a good setter for them anymore. I mean... I'm already feeling a bit like that. Like I'm not good enough for them. I feel like I can't see the plays clearly anymore. And my tosses feel just a bit off every time. I don't think anyone else has noticed, but I have. If this keeps up... Me getting worse... then I'm afraid that I won't be able to set to them anymore. Not in the way they want, at least."
— to Akaashi Keiji
"Try your best, and let's win. I'll give you my best tosses, so you better hit them."
— to Kuroo Tetsurō, Haiba Lev, and Tsukishima Kei
"He is in no place to criticize my fashion choices when I'm the one that picks out most of his clothes! [...] On his own, he dresses like a five year old given free reign over a clothing store. He may not care, but I can't let him leave the house like that."
— to Akaashi Keiji about Shiraishi Shōtarō
"Nervous you wouldn't find me? There are a lot more people here than in Miyagi. If I didn't find you, who knows what could have happened to you? You could have been swept away by some kidnapper... What if you had gotten taken by the yakuza?"
— to Akita Midori (trying to scare her)
"Being good isn't all about having secret techniques that no one knows. It's actually pretty hard to keep secrets when you're that good. People are always watching, and they'll figure you out quickly. To stay good, you have to have simple strength. You can't rely on tricks because they'll always be figured out. Pure strength can blow through any obstacle, though, and that's what Bokuto-san is like."
— to Akita Midori
"There's something about [Akaashi] that makes me all flustered. Like when he compliments me, my face gets all red. I hate it."
— to Akita Midori
"You know, I've always liked the friends you've had growing up, but I think your friends now are my favorites. I even feel like I could call them my friends, too, with how much time I end up spending with them. And you know how in movies and TV and stuff, when the protagonist is first introduced to someone and they don't really think anything of it, but then they find themselves coincidentally seeing that person more and more, and before they know it, that person has become an irreplaceable part of their lives?"
— to Shiraishi Shōtarō
"A friend of Mido-chan's is a friend of mine. And no one comes on stronger than her."
— to Maruya Kaya
"There's no point in being humble. If you’re talented, then it's stupid to deny it. I think some of you could stand to brag about yourselves a bit more."
— to her Hatsumichi Springs teammates
"I've worked hard for my entire life so that I could be where I am now... I've gone through a lot of pain... And they're saying I said should quit all of that just because I have a pretty face. It's... it's awful. I hate it."
— to Akaashi Keiji about criticism she received online

RelationshipsShiraishi Shōtarō[ Macchan || Nīchan ] Maho and Shōtarō are very close. They were nearly inseparable as children. Maho would always follow him around and do whatever he did. He was always annoyed by this behavior, but he still looked out for her and allowed her to hang around him. When Shōtarō started playing volleyball, Maho also wanted to start playing. Shōtarō has always picked on Maho and bullied her as older brothers do, and not much changed in that aspect as they grew up. Even now, he is always poking fun at her and teasing her, but she is fully capable of teasing him right back. He is very protective of her, and he gets defensive when he sees boys talking to her. She often gets annoyed at him for his overprotective behavior, but she is secretly very grateful that he cares so much. Akaashi Keiji[ Shira-san / Maho || Akaashi-san / Keiji ] They met through Shōtarō. Akaashi often came over to their house along with Bokuto, so she and Akaashi had many chances to chat. Maho would often hang out with Shōtarō and his friends since they were so close in age, so she naturally became friends with them, too. Maho has always looked up to Akaashi as a setter, so she sometimes asks him for advice about volleyball. She has a huge amount of respect for him, not only as a player, but as a person. She trusts his judgement about many things. As they started to get closer, they both began to develop feelings for each. When they eventually started dating, they had their relationship from Shōtarō at first. They get along very well. Akaashi's calm and reserved personality complements Maho's more dramatic and outgoing personality. He is usually good at keeping her in check when her theatrics get to be a bit too much. Sometimes, his serious personality gets on her nerves, as she wants him to dote on her more. However, when he does compliment her, she gets very flustered. She usually does not get embarrassed, but he is the only one able to fluster her like that. Some might think they're an odd couple with an interesting dynamic, but they care about each other a lot and enjoy each other's company. After high school, they moved in together. Bokuto Kōtarō[ Shira-chan || Bokuto-san ] Since Bokuto is one of Shōtarō's friends, Maho has been around him a lot. She think he's a great player and she admires his skill. However, she also gets a bit exasperated by his simple and boisterous personality. Bokuto sees Maho as something of a little sister, and he is pretty fond of her. Kageyama Tobio[ Shiraishi-san || Kageyama-kun ] They met through Midori. They have a bit of a rivalry, as they are both known as prodigy setters. Midori introduced them to each other because they were similar in that regard, but she had no idea that it would lead to such a competition between them. Kageyama doesn't entirely trust Maho because of her theatrical personality, but they get along better in the future. Akita Midori[ Maccha || Mido-chan ] Midori and Maho were neighbors while Maho lived in Miyagi. They played volleyball together, both being regarded as prodigies. Together, they were a near unstoppable duo. During that time, they became very close and were nearly inseparable. Even when Maho moved to Tokyo at the end of their last year of elementary school, they remained in contact. Even to this day, they text often and are still good friends. On extended breaks from school, they will often visit each other. It was thanks to Maho that Midori was able to train with Bokuto. Maho helps Midori learn how to set, and Midori helps Maho practice her spikes. Shinohara Mai[ Shira || Mai-san ] They get along well. They were on the same team in junior high, and now they go to the same high school. They are known in the area as an unstoppable setter and ace duo. Maho understands Shinohara very well, and she is capable of setting the ball exactly how she likes it. Shinohara has gotten very good at keeping Maho's theatrics in check. They often hang out together even outside of school. Isobe Kaede[ Shira || Isobe-san ] They played on Keisetsu's team together. Their relationship was initially a bit rocky because Maho had heard about what Kaede said to Midori back when Kaede attended Kitagawa Daiichi. Even though Midori told Maho that Kaede wasn't a bad person, Maho still held a grudge towards Kaede. Maho overheard Kaede talking to Kurogane, attempting to mend the two setters' relationship. After that, Maho had newfound respect towards Kaede. In turn, Maho helped Kaede move past her feelings of frustration towards Midori. She told Kaede that Midori took her words to heart and vowed to work harder to be a player that her teammates could be proud of. Maho and Kaede now have a good relationship. Maho has a lot of respect for Kaede as her senior and as a player, and Kaede treats Maho with the same respect. Kurogane Mitsuru[ Shiraishi || Kurogane-san ] They played on the same team in junior high. Before Maho went to Keisetsu, Kurogane was the starting setter. However, after Maho came and the coach saw how rapidly she improved, she was made the starting setter. Kurogane began to resent Maho for this, thinking that Maho just relied on her natural talents instead of working hard like Kurogane did. There was always a lot of tension between them. Maruya Kaya[ Kaya-san || Maho-chan ] They met through Midori. The first time Kaya saw Maho, she thought she was gorgeous. She immediately approached the younger girl and asked if she would consider modeling with her. Maho agreed to model with Kaya in one photoshoot, and they became good friends after that. Some people say that the way Kaya calls Maho pretty is bad for Maho's already large ego. |
