"Working hard means nothing if you don't win games, though. While making a valiant effort looks good in person, it means nothing on the scoresheet."

— Shiraishi Shōtarō

Shōtarō Shiraishi (白石 真帆 Shiraishi Shōtarō) was a second-year student at Fukurōdani Academy and a middle blocker for the boys' volleyball team. He is currently a florist and the owner of his family's flower shop.

Appearance

Shōtarō is a tall boy with fair skin. He has long, dirty blonde hair. He normally pins his bangs back, and he sometimes ties his hair back in a ponytail. He has violet eyes. He has been noted to be quite handsome. He can often be seen with a confident smirk on his face.

He can often be seen wearing his school uniform, which consists of a white dress shirt, a gray blazer, a blue striped tie, and black pants. While playing for Fukurōdani, he wore a white, black, and yellow uniform with the number 9. His volleyball shoes are white with yellow accents. His casual clothes often consist of stylish and trendy clothes. He doesn't care much about fashion, but Maho picks out his clothes for him.

Personality

Shōtarō is a snarky guy who likes to tease people. He is playful and likes to play pranks and get a rise out of people. He is very intelligent and witty, which he uses to insult people in subtle ways. He is also good at reading people, and he isn't easily fooled. He is brutally honest and doesn't hold back his opinions. He is calm and laid-back, and people see him as "cool." He is surprisingly competitive and doesn't like to lose. He can be quite cynical, and he tends to be suspicious of people when he first meets them. He is fiercely loyal to his friends and family, and he can be very protective of them. He is especially protective of Maho, getting angry at any boy that tries to talk to her.

Background

Shōtarō grew up in the Miyagi prefecture. He was close to his siter, Maho. She always followed him around and wanted to do whatever he did, which he found a bit annoying. He was still very protective of her and always looked out for her. He began playing volleyball in elementary school, starting as a setter. In junior high, he started playing as a wing spiker. Right before his second year of junior high, Shōtarō moved to Tōkyō due to his family's flower shop being relocated. There, he attended Keisetsu Junior High, where he joined its prestigious volleyball team. Even though he began as a wing spiker, his coach began training him as a middle blocker to make better use of his height.

Shōtarō graduated from Keisetsu and enrolled for high school at Fukurōdani Academy. He joined the volleyball club as a middle blocker. He became good friends with Akaashi Keiji, who was in the same class as him, and Bokuto Kōtarō. He was widely known as a talented and witty middle blocker that was able to frustrate spikers with quick read blocking and smug smirk.

After high school, he began attending university and working part time at his family's flower shop. After graduating with a degree in business administration and a certification in floral design, he took over the family flower shop and became a florist.

Shōtarō is a talented player that has had experience in every position except libero. He works best as a blocker, but he can also function as a backup setter and a fearsome spiker. He is good at quickly reading people and taking in a lot of information at once, so his read blocking is very accurate. He is also skilled at baiting spikers into hitting to a certain spot, usually where floor defense is waiting. He is not easily fooled by feints and dumps. He is also a skilled spiker with a long reach that can often hit over a block. He is surprisingly fast, so he can react and set up blocks against quick attacks.

Jumping Reach: 336 cm

Skills

  • Setting: Since he was once a setter, he can serve as a backup setter. His sets aren't perfect, but he has been practicing them with Maho. He can also use this to fake blockers into thinking he will spike a ball, then turning and setting the ball.
  • Read blocking: He is skilled at reading people and taking in information from all over the court, so his read blocking is very accurate. His blocking is very persistent, as he can get a touch on just about anything, so spikers can get frustrated and impatient.
  • Speed: He is the fastest one on his team, which catches people off guard. He can react to quick attacks such as Hinata and Kageyama's minus tempo attack and get up a block in time.
  • Taunting: He is an expert at subtly taunting his opponents, such as with a smug smirk. This can frustrate spikers, thus making them easier to predict.

Quotes

"No, [Maho] doesn't dislike you. If anything, she really likes you guys, so she wants you to have a positive image of her. Even though having glasses and messy hair is not a big deal..."

— to Bokuto Kōtarō and Akaashi Keiji

"[Maho]'s hard to toss for. She only focuses on how I'm tossing and keeps missing the ball. And she keeps critiquing my tosses. I mean, sheesh, I'm not going to be able to toss like her or Akaashi. I may have been a setter in the past, but I'm not anymore."

— to Bokuto Kōtarō and Akaashi Keiji

"Working hard means nothing if you don't win games, though. While making a valiant effort looks good in person, it means nothing on the scoresheet. [...] It's the sad truth."

— to Shiraishi Maho

"Are you kidding me? I was pissed at first. You should have told me right away. But... I know why you were hesitant. I heard you say you didn't want to ruin my friendship with Akaashi. The fact that you hid something from me because you were afraid of what I would do... Well, I realize that there's something wrong with that. I don't want you to ever feel like you can't tell me something."

— to Shiraishi Maho about her relationship with Akaashi Keiji

"You're not the same baby sister that used to cling to me wherever we went. You don't need me to look out for you as much anymore. If this is what you've decided to do, then I'll support you."

— to Shiraishi Maho

"It’s a Shiraishi tradition to have [plumerias] at this point. I’d be bringing shame to our family name if I couldn’t grow a decent plumeria."

— to Shiraishi Maho
