History

Raised piously, Tatian found himself in an upwardly mobile position within the Nephfei religious community. Due to his emotional teaching and well versed memory for texts and mantras, he rose quickly in authority and was soon in the upper echelons of the clergy of Atala.

While visiting family outside of the city, during a market fair no less, Tatian and his sister's family were involved in a deadly magical fire, later revealed to have been caused by a spinxyn. Tatian survived, although heavily scarred by the unrefined magical flames he tread upon while attempting to save his sister and nephew, to no avail.

Traumatized by the experience, Tatian took what disdain he already had for spinxyn and transformed it into a seething hatred. He spoke louder and more frequently against all things or Nephfeins influenced by spinxyn culture or nature. This tendency caused several acts of violence on his person; one by a spinx that managed to get their claws onto his face. He grew so brash, in spite of the attacks and in fact even more outspoken because of them, that those who influenced his power, thought it best to move him outside the center city, into the outskirts. This accomplished 2 things: it got Tatian out of the main branch of the clergy of Atala, where his vitriol would not taint the reputations of his peers or drive away moderate worshipers in the city; and it put him in an area of perceived "greater sin": south of Atala, closer to Catalis - land of loud extravagance and flashy excess.

While initially insulted by the relocation, Tatian was quick to exert his authority in his new role & title, continuing his crusades to any who could hear. He ran regular services, as well as study classes for local children, adolescents, and adults alike.

One day, Tatian was approached by a pair of spinxyn who had a proposal. They wanted their already cursed child to be raised in Tatian's church, in order to spare him from further hardship in life. He initially laughed in their faces, incredulous at the very idea of having a spinxyn child, much less, a cursed one, in his holy home. They begged and pleaded with him for days, prostrating themselves before him... and he eventually relented (to get rid of the pair, or goaded by their praise and humility, even he wasn't sure).

Adelaide was in his care from that day forward, for better or worse.

Personality

Although a wealth of historical and philosophical knowledge from years of study, Tatian does not give information freely, instead judging everyone, constantly and harshly, deciding if they deserve any words from him at all. He has a very high opinion of himself, and is not at all shy about calling out perceived sin at any moment, or even starting an impromptu sermon.

Tatian is unable to see himself in anyone he considers lower than himself, except perhaps students and those humble and genuine enough to submit themselves to holy knowledge. Any backtalk is swiftly stifled however; if his authoratative tone and stare aren't enough for anyone to back down, his white hot rage will surely do the trick. In his more private settings, Tatian has been known to fits of violence and periods of deep melancholy, sometimes simultaniously.

Thoroughness, cleanliness, and precise action are very important to Tatian: although he believes that no spinxyn is truly capible of these things (and he will let them know this). For this reason, Tatian has been known to push back on slights to centicorns, merphin, and even harpips; but spinxyn, he believes, deserve everything they get, and will not step in to help or prevent harm to a spinxyn.

Can be gentle, but usually only to affects of the church, or to manipulate another into a false sense of security.

Most secular interest is automata and orchestrions. He greatly admires the precision and artestry involved in these arts, and has managed to procure a few for his church and private collection.
