History

Adelaide's parents were both cursed Spinxyn who found solice in each others' presence. When he was born, they tried to instill a sense of reverance in him for the gods and other nephfeian species. Despite this, Adelaide found himself cursed at an early age for a fairly innocuous comment that was interpreted as blasphamy. He gained black needle growths that shot out at random. His parents felt themselves failures and gave him up to a monastery in Atala in an attempt to try and prevent him from further suffering.

Adelaide was put under the tutelage of the strict clergy of the monastery, all centicorns who were none too pleased to have a spinxyn cast upon them. He was instructed in the ways of prayer, rituals, and relics, although these lessons often seemed to be taught AT him as opposed to being taught TO him. During this time, his growth curse began to rearrange into organized patterns, to the delight of his teachers. Adelaide was also taught that his ills were no one's fault but his own, and as a spinxyn, he had many to make up for. He became the monastery's resident scapegoat, taking blame for anything that happened near him. Once, as a teen, Adelaide had a holy relic stolen from him, and was cursed by a teacher, forcing his fluffy tail to transmute into the shape of the relic so that he "could never lose it again".

Although outwardly submissive and demure, Adelaide was secretly very facinated by fashion and beauty. He ferreted away spinxyn magazine articles and photos and grabbed scraps of discarded cloth from the monastery to make his own fashion in private. As he was once harshly disciplined when a teacher found out about his hobby, Adelaide has been very careful to keep his trinkets hidden, except those that align very carefully with what the monastery considers acceptable garb. Due to his observance of holy mandates and seeming compliance to give up his spinxyn tendencies, Adelaide was given a centicorn gift by his teacher, a trait which he is constantly reminded can be removed at the slightest wrongdoing.

To this day, Adelaide is shown as an example to the city around him. "This is what the power of the gods can do with a lowly Spinxyn! This is what a good Spinxyn looks like!"

Personality

Adelaide is a bit of a contradiction, as someone who feels lower than low when in the presence of authority, but who also feels the need to belittle those in equal or less status than him. However, as a bit of a straight-laced choirboy, he is quite easy to prank, let alone upset, much to the joy of those spinxyn and harpips around him.

Does he genuinely believe the things he's been taught in the monastery? Most of it, he continues to practice out of fear. But he can't remember knowing anything different, so it all must be true if all these centicorns and merphin believe it, right? Besides the dogma, he finds many things about the gods very beautiful, from the texts written to the songs and chants, to the robes and golden sashes and achetecture of the building in which he lives, and at the end of the day, these are the things that keep him where he is.

In his tiny private quarters in the monastery attic, he preens his fur, and attempts to sew new fashion for himself out of salvaged fabric. It honestly doesn't occur to him that his pastime might conflict with his holy creeds, despite getting in trouble for them in the past. Maybe someday he'll face a reckoning... one where he has to discover that he can leave the monastery, that he's not as evil as his teachers have him believe, and maybe they're not as good as he's been told...
