???
Where have you gone? I am calling on you
My siren's on and there's so many things that I need you to do
I never asked when you were here
Because it seemed so crystal clear
That it was you who needed me
That was the way it had to be
(Please note: This version of the character is being used in a Final Fantasy themed tabletop game.)
With a hulking, athletic frame and an imposing presence, she is an individual who appears to have been forged in the crucible of a thousand battles, yet her mysterious past remains shrouded in obscurity. Standing head and shoulders above most, Big Red's physicality is both a source of curiosity and fear, as her mere presence can send a clear message that she is not to be trifled with.
One of the most intriguing aspects of Big Red's persona is her lack of a conventional identity. She drifts through the game's world with no discernible job or backstory, a cipher to all who encounter her. Despite her towering stature, her journey seems to have brought her to a point of destitution, leading her to take on odd jobs for sustenance or resorting to the humble act of dumpster diving. This juxtaposition of her incredible strength with her down-to-earth struggles creates an aura of mystery that surrounds her.
Big Red's enigmatic nature is further accentuated by her near-silent demeanor. She seldom speaks, leaving those she encounters to communicate with her through alternative means. Her vision is severely impaired, a fact that contributes to her overall aloofness. She navigates her surroundings with great difficulty, often bumping into objects or relying on her other senses to compensate for her poor eyesight. Her method of communication is limited to a combination of sign language, writing, and a handheld tape recorder that plays a small selection of pre-recorded messages. The inability or reluctance to convey her own name adds to the aura of intrigue that surrounds her, leading to the myriad of nicknames she's garnered over time.
Beneath the imposing exterior, Big Red's personality reveals a stark contrast to her fearsome appearance. She is remarkably friendly, though her interactions with others are marked by a cautious reserve. Her towering frame often conceals a gentle disposition, and she is a patient and empathetic listener. If she witnesses injustice unfolding, she does not hesitate to step in, her sense of justice unwavering. Yet, her inability to grasp complex social cues, likely due to her visual impairment, sometimes leads to awkward or unintentionally comical moments.
A cloud of amnesia hangs over Big Red, rendering her unable to recall the details of her past. This absence of memories has left her disconnected from her own history, leading to a sense of detachment from the world around her. Despite this, she remains a steadfast and principled individual who is driven by an innate desire to do what is right, even as she grapples with her own enigmatic existence.

Lost in the rain, lost in the wind
Big Red's past is shrouded in impenetrable darkness, a blank canvas where her name, her origins, and her life story are but whispers of a forgotten existence.
The anchor to her elusive past lies in the form of a pair of dog tags—weathered and worn, dangling from a chain around her neck. Engraved upon them is the cryptic name "Dark Star," a figure with emerald-green eyes and short chestnut hair. These tags are the solitary link to her history, and they pulse with an ineffable connection that stirs deep within her.
Big Red is acutely aware that Dark Star holds the key to unlocking the vault of her memories. She carries his name like a sacred mantra, a beacon of hope in her journey to unravel the tangled threads of her amnesia. In the core of her being, she understands that the answers to her identity and her past are intrinsically tied to this enigmatic individual.
Her attire, a set of ex-military garments, hints at a life lived within the disciplined confines of a military unit. Tattered and threadbare, they are remnants of a bygone era, raising further questions about her history. Each thread, each patch, seems to whisper fragments of a life left behind—an existence that eludes her like a mirage in the desert.
The journey to uncover the truth about her amnesia is marked by an overwhelming sense of loss and longing. Big Red yearns for Dark Star with an intensity that transcends the boundaries of her memory. The missing pieces of her past are like a puzzle that can only be completed by reuniting with him, and this yearning is a poignant undercurrent in her character's narrative.
Her story takes a poignant twist when a homeless companion, a fellow wanderer in the streets, addresses her as the "pack leader" and hands her a unit patch before being apprehended by authorities. This patch, a symbol of camaraderie and shared experiences, is a poignant reminder of the connections she has forged in her life, connections now obscured by the haze of amnesia...
Abilities
- She is extremely strong and has high pain tolerance.
- Her class, pugilist, allows her to use chakra to heal herself in battle.
- While her vision is poor, her other senses have heightened to compensate.
- Is extremely adept in riding motorcycles.
- Has a fascination with the sky
Design Notes
- Visually based on Fujiko Mine (Lupin the III) and Red (Transistor) but only very loosely.
- Largely inspired by the story of 621/Raven in Armored Core IV: Fires of Rubicon. Particularly this fan comic by Kyou.
- Eyes are largely blue, but her limbal rings turn red when interfacing with technology.
- Has tapetum lucidum.
- Ethnically appears to be Eurasian.
- Her hair is closer to fur in terms of texture, having an undercoat and stiff guard hairs. She usually allows it to fall into her face and occasionally cuts it above her shoulder.
- At the end of the game, Red cuts off her hair to the undercoat, leaving it dry and frizzy.
- Is often covered in various scars.
Trivia
- She is a lot stronger than she looks, and has higher hearing than the average human.
- Often has about one facial expression, is more reliant on body language to express herself (or by bluntly telling people how she feels about something).
- Wears gloves in public, and in crowds or places with lots of noise.
- Both Jay and Red are trilingual, and can speak English, Japanese (Doman) and Chinese (Yanxian). Red cannot read English at this time.
- Red had open scarring on the left side of her face from a previous accident (probably as infantry) and this was directly inspired by an artist who drew the unseen protagonist of Armored Core VI with the same wounds.
- Red is also associated with a song called Samudrartha/水龙吟 (which you can hear by Red’s voice claim here, or the original version that Dark Star would have sung here). Samudrartha is a song I’ve recently associated with the pair for many reasons that I don’t want to dive into here for many reasons, but its presence here is to highlight two things: Red is more responsive to Yanxian than English (Eorzean? Lapis?) and her attachment to music.

Dark Star
[ ??? - Hume]
She knows, with an unwavering certainty, that Dark Star holds the key to unlocking the labyrinth of her lost memories. The mere mention of his name stirs something deep within her—a yearning, an ache, an unquenchable thirst for answers. Yet, the face of Dark Star remains shrouded in the shadows of her amnesia, a silhouette that refuses to come into focus. The significance of Dark Star in Big Red's life is a puzzle piece that eludes her grasp. She cannot recall why he was important to her, the shared experiences they might have had, or the nature of their connection. She navigates the world in search of the man who is both her beacon of hope and a haunting enigma.
MAJOR SPOILERS, HIGHLY SPECULATIVE:
The relationship between Carmine, once known as Big Red, and Dark Star, or John Morgan, her husband, is a profound and unshakable bond that defied societal expectations and transcended the boundaries of gender. Their connection was forged amidst the rigors of military training, where Carmine became John's silent guardian during perilous operations.
What may have seemed like a conventional heterosexual relationship to outsiders was, in truth, a much deeper and profound connection. Carmine's loyalty to John was steadfast, not contingent on gender norms, but rooted in the deep understanding they shared. She did not comprehend the concept of being female, her identity fluid, yet her devotion to John was unwavering. Their partnership was a sanctuary, a refuge from the despondency that had plagued their lives. They found in each other a reason to endure, a source of strength amid the chaos of their military existence.
Carmine's heartfelt creation, the song "Samudrartha,"serves as a testament to their bond. It speaks of the ascent of a dragon amid its agony, mirroring the challenges they faced and overcame together. The melody she sang, composed for John while he vigilantly watched over her following a military experiment gone awry, embodied the depth of their connection—a love story that defied convention and societal expectations. To this day, she associates the image of dragons with John, whether she remembers or not.
Luke Wedge
[Friend - Velkk Detective]
Though their paths may have crossed under unconventional circumstances, their friendship has grown deep and genuine. Luke Wedge, a velkk detective known for his sharp instincts, has taken Big Red under his wing, seeing her as a sort of enigmatic stray dog that has found its way to his doorstep.
Their connection is marked by a mutual trust and understanding. Big Red, driven by her amnesia and the quest to find Dark Star, sought Luke's assistance, and he willingly embraced the role of her detective. Despite her towering and intimidating presence, Luke sees the vulnerability within her and offers her a place of comfort, even allowing her to sleep on the stoop of his office.
Jakobi "Jake" Kobi
[Friend - Lalafell Corsair]
Big Red's relationship with Detective Jakobi "Jake" Kobi is a heartwarming contrast to the seasoned detective Luke Wedge. Jake, a youthful and empathetic lalafell, serves as Luke's partner and brings a refreshing perspective to the dynamic.
Unlike Luke, Jake possesses a youthful enthusiasm and a natural inclination toward empathy. Upon encountering Big Red, he immediately recognizes her vulnerability and the complexity of her amnesia. He regards her with a gentle kindness, approaching her with an open heart and a desire to assist her in her quest to find Dark Star.
Ashra "Ash" Rajan
[Friend - Aegyl Bard]
In the bustling world of The House of Paine, a place where music and magic entwine, the unlikely friendship between Big Red and Ash, an empathetic aegyl lounge singer, shines like a precious gem. Ash, a member of a species known for their stoicism, is a rarity with his overflowing empathy, and this unique quality forms the cornerstone of his connection with Big Red. As a fellow member of the club, they share a unique bond amidst the nightlife's glamorous chaos. Ash, with his enchanting voice, weaves melodies that seem to touch Big Red's heart in ways others cannot. His gentle friendship serves as a balm to her enigmatic existence, a comforting presence in a world where she often stands as the silent sentinel.
Ash's empathy transcends species boundaries, and he becomes a beacon of solace for Big Red. In his company, she finds a friend who understands the unspoken words that reside within her heart.
