Bel was born in and grew up on the outskirts of a small village in the mountains of Vassa. The villagers here were extremely distrustful towards and suspicious of Tieflings in general (due largely in part to their strange, often hellish appearances) so Bel’s family and several other families of Tieflings were relegated to living beyond the main village walls and were not treated well when running errands, shopping for food, or engaging in any other activities within the village itself. Despite the hardships, this was the only home that they had ever known, and they were reluctant to leave as long as they could make ends meet without too much trouble. As such, life was not always easy for Bel and his family, who struggled to provide for him and his little sister, Nephyra (whom he affectionately called Nephie). Bel’s only real friends were the other Tiefling children who lived nearby, and they developed close friendships during Bel’s childhood. Because the Tieflings were seen as second-class citizens, Bel and his friends developed a habit of stealing many things they needed to survive, including food or other provisions that merchants would either not sell to them or mark up to much higher prices. Bel saw nothing wrong with this and, over time, developed a distinct hatred of humans, as he felt that they were responsible for his struggles. One winter when his little sister fell deathly ill, the only medicine available was far too expensive for Bel’s family to afford. Desperate to save her, Bel and his friends conceived a plan to break into the home of the village apothecary to steal the medicine that would heal his sister. They had intended to do this while the man and his wife were away from their home on business but were unfortunately caught when the apothecary and his wife returned home earlier than expected. In the struggle that ensued, Bel found himself grappling with the apothecary and, after wrenching the man’s knife from his hands, struck a fatal blow that left the man dead. As the man’s wife took off screaming into the night, Bel panicked, knowing that if he was apprehended, he would likely be killed for what he had done. With little time to plan his next actions, Bel raced home and, while his family was asleep, he quickly packed what few belongings he could carry and fled into the mountains, leaving his family and life as he knew it behind. He ran through the hills for what seemed like days, before at last stumbling (quite literally) upon the grounds of an old monastery nestled deep in the mountains. Alarmed by his haggard appearance and weariness, the monks took Bel in, never once pressing him to divulge what misfortune had led him there. Rather, they adopted him into their fold, training him in their ways and giving him a sense of stability and acceptance that he had longed for all his life. Although he missed his family terribly, Bel knew he could not risk returning, and instead spent the next seven years at the monastery, where he grew into a young man. As a sign of their endearment, the monks bestowed Bel with a new surname, “K’jrin,” which means something akin to “whisper” in their ancestors’ ancient language (fitting as he was always rather quiet). Eventually, Bel decided to leave the monastery and pursue life on his own, driven by a new sense of purpose. Determined to cast off the shackles of his past and to prove that he is worth more than the derision he received as a child, Bel aims to better himself and extend the same selflessness and compassion the monks shared with him to whomever he happens to come across in his travels.
