Appearance

I speak with a distinctive drawl. Sure, Sorrel can read and figure. Writing, uh... was never his strong suit. His spelling is phonetic at best, and abysmal at worst.

My relationship with gender is... complicated. His wardrobe? Practical. Dresses appear very infrequently, as you cannot climb or fix a fence very easily in a dress. (Plus, they make him faintly uncomfortable.) If asked, he'd call himself a woman, and get confused when others say that means he should only use "she/her/hers".

Positive Traits

A labor of love is a purpose and meaning. He'll take all the time necessary to do things right the first time. Mistakes are part of the process, but they're also a chance to learn and improve in the future. He loves nothing more than putting in a good day's work.

My first duty is to my family. Sorrel only keeps enough change on their person to get by. All else goes back home to support Rhu and Mara, and they'll never budge on it. Given the opportunity, they'd like to return home themself, but with the bandits still at large, they can't reconcile.

Negative Traits

I have an acute weakness for a pretty face. Sorrel is no good with women — especially one Miss Petunia Damaris. He gets flustered very quickly, and tends to lose all composure when someone flirts with him.

I never, ever forget a grudge. He has a long memory. Don't test it. Sorrel trusts quickly, and judges harshly. It may not be very Shoony of him, but he figures it keeps him safer in the long run.

About

Sorrel is a stone butch lesbian who uses he/she/they interchangeably. They were raised with the philosophy "there is no one true way". They value loyalty very highly. They've got kind of a chip on their shoulder... probably due to their short stature. Their main priority at this point is finding money to send home to their grandmother and sister, but if they ever get a chance to get their hands on those bandits...

i'm no longer at the gate

Born to farm life, Sorrel is no stranger to hard work and dedication in the face of greater odds. His grandfather's farm, Bull's Eye Acres, was his entire world for the first few years of his life. (Functionally, this meant that nobody particularly gave a shit what pronouns he wanted to use, so he didn't either.) His grandfather taught him how to use a gun at the age of four, and both were surprised to discover his natural talent for shooting, which was nurtured into a comfortable respect and knowledge in the art of the flintlock pistol.

i've gone out west to find my way

The farm was never peaceful or quiet, but the daily chaos filled his heart and left him tuckered out and happy every night.

Until the bandits came.

After the death, the crying, the ruin... Grandma Rhu and Mara came back from their trip to the market to find Sorrel in the remains of the cowshed, gagged and bleeding through their shirt. Big Sumac, the farm's lone horse, stood behind them, nearly unharmed. "Couldn't let them have Sue," Sorrel said, and promptly passed out.

but heaven knows i'll be back some day

Winter was difficult with only three bodies to work the farm. Dawn one week after the first thaw found Sorrel with a pack, a crumpled note, and Papa Barley's pistols, prepared to set out for work. They slowly descended the stairs to find breakfast on the table and a sighing, resigned Grandma Rhu, who gave them a tight hug and a few days' rations. "Go out and make them proud, boss."

Bull's Eye Farm [ ]

Sorrel's family means everything in the world to him. He is incredibly proud to call himself a Barlow, and nothing could ever change that.

Papa Barley Madden was a traveling trick shot who spent a good number of years with various circuses until a fine lady with a front row seat caught his eye. He settled down with Rhubarb and, with the money he'd made as a performer, they bought the land to start Bull's Eye Acres. Barley is missing and presumed dead after the bandit attack last winter.

Grandma Rhubarb Madden grew up as the third of six, and good golly, was it ever crowded. She took any excuse to get out of farm work and into the kitchen; it wasn't long before her cakes and pies established her as one of the area's best bakers. With her talent behind the stove, the Madden-Barlow house never went hungry. She currently lives on the farm with Mara.

Cress Barlow was poleaxed by Rosemary from the minute they met. This never really stopped. Luckily for the Bull's Eye Acres family, he is the only occupant capable of doing a fair bit of accounting, as well as teaching it to Rosemary. He is also a deft hand with a skinning knife, a talent Sorrel always appreciated. Cress is missing and presumed dead after the bandit attack last winter.

Rosemary Barlow was the single daughter of Rhu and Barley. Rosey Madden grew up with a good sense of humour and strong hands. She learned how to fix a fence before she could read, and learned to read before she bothered learning to cook, given Rhu's talents. (Actually, she never did learn to cook.) She spotted Cress at a young age and never stopped insisting they'd get married one day. Rosemary is missing and presumed dead after the bandit attack last winter.

Amaranth Barlow is a force. For all the quiet strength her sibling has, Mara is loud, impulsive, and boisterous. (Yet somehow also a whiz at math.) She currently lives on the farm with Rhu.
