Abel Jude Ruby

Personality

cautious, warm, easily confused/flustered, gentle, patient, shy. Abel tries not to wear his heart on his sleeve if he can help it, but that makes him so much easier to pick on and mess with. He's aware of it but he can't help his gentle nature.

History

Abel was born in a small one-bedroom house in the forests of Burning Springs, Kentucky to Emily Ruby, a single mother. Abel's father was never known to him, though Micah, Abel's older brother, suspects that Abel was the product of a rape or that their mother was manipulated by their town pastor at the time.

He was born with the ability to see and communicate with spirits, just like his older brother. However, whereas Micah did everything in his power to suppress his own skills due to their abusive mother, Abel was given the opportunity to cultivate his talent and keep the spiritual channels open. He was protected from his mother's abuse by Micah, and whenever she would try to get at him for doing something "strange" like talking to walls or playing in the backyard and seemingly talking to people who weren't there, Micah would take full responsibility for it instead and Abel would get off scott free.

When Abel turned 17, he had enough of his mother's abuse and decided in a split second decision that he would pack up and leave and try to make his way in the world. He intially moved around Kentucky for a year doing odd jobs and trying to get real-world experience, after which he began state hopping until he decided to finally settle on a career in his early-mid twenties and went to seminary to become a Reverend. His reasoning for such a career path was that since he enjoys helping people and offering comfort when it's needed, a Reverend would be a good choice, and he also had hoped to try and deepen his faith, which ended up not happening, unfortunately.

Abel and Micah were raised baptist, but their mother was extremely religious and extremely zealous about it, and Abel decided that he didn't agree with his mother's teachings and thought that if there was such a thing as God, there would be no way that God would be as horrible and petty and cruel and childish as his mother made the deity out to be. He hoped that through theology and prayer, he'd be able to understand more and find closure and find a place in the way he was raised, but by the time he graduated seminary, he felt more lost than ever.

Now he works as a Reverend in a small Louisiana town, south of New Orleans. He tries his best to avoid having to give sermons and mostly prefers community outreach. He works as an "exorcist" as well, thought that term could be used very loosely, as Abel's style of exorcisms relies more on having a heart-to-heart with the spirit stuck in the mortal coil and hopefully convincing them to cross over themselves or at least to help them find closure.

Relationships

Rejean Loubet

When Abel first moved to Louisiana, Rejean was the first person he'd met that wanted to be his friend. They showed him around, and they immediately found common ground with him due to both of them having the ability to speak with spirits. However, whereas Abel can only communicate with those trapped in the mortal coil, Rejean has the ability to call upon the spirits of the afterlife as well as use their body as a spiritual host. Rejean acts as abel's advisor and life coach in addition to being his best friend. They really wish that Abel would just buy a cell phone already.

Blue Valentine

Blue is Abel's "Client." Abel was called to do a routine exorcism and met Blue, the ghost of a young man trying to stay tethered to a house recently purchased by a newlywed couple. The couple ended up bringing the ghost of the wife's deceased grandmother along with them to the home Blue was inhabiting, and when Abel was called to help the grandmother's ghost along, Blue was also sealed away from the home, and then followed Abel back to his apartment in hopes of finding a new place to tether himself. When he was unsuccessful in finding a tether in time, his social worker and parole officare came to collect him, and Blue tried to sweet-talk his way into making it look like Abel had agreed to help him stay tethered. As you can imagine, it did not go over well.

Holliday Jones

Holliday currently acts as Abel's contact with Underside. She runs the spiritual rehabilitation program, which Abel has unwittingly become a part of. She thinks abel is a good person, but very naiive and too kind for his own good. Abel thinks Holliday is extremely intimidating and wants to do whatever he can to help make her job easier.
