In a word? Weary. Roc would honestly rather be left alone and never bothered again, and they're teetering on the edge of the point of no return. Being treated like little more than an automaton for one's entire life will do that to a person, after all. Stuck in a limbo between their original, more neutral personality and descending into complete monstrousness, Roc is about three steps from making a concentrated effort to set the entire universe on fire.

They tend not to emote much, for multiple reasons. First and foremost: their opinions are never considered, so why bother even trying to protest when they're ordered to do things they'd really rather not? It's not like anyone has ever given a single fuck what they had to say before, and Roc has no reason to believe that'll change at any point. The people of the galaxy, with very few exceptions, don't consider Roc a sapient individual with opinions, preferences, or feelings, after all. The other reason is that they're not entirely sure what it's like to really feel things other than bitterness, exhaustion, and spite—they've never had a reason to feel anything else.

Roc's passivity is born more of weariness than it is of their lack of interest in self-direction: there's not much point trying to steer a situation when nothing you choose to do has any impact, after all. If they were allowed to make their own choices, they'd... not really know what to do with that. It would confuse them and they wouldn't really understand the point, even though they truly appreciate and desperately want the opportunity to make their own decisions. The first thing they'd do would likely be to revel in their newfound ability to harass the crew if they're not treated with the respect they feel they deserve. Turning off the heat in the showers, locking people out of their quarters, the like.

Being treated like an individual with rights and personhood deeply confuses Roc, because as much as they want it, that's never happened before, and they would struggle to understand why exactly it suddenly matters what they want. Stubbornly continuing to treat Roc like the person they want to be will eventually cause them to open up more, emoting a bit more freely and actually parsing their own emotions with a reasonable degree of competence. In addition, a person that manages to help Roc assert their own individuality will be rewarded with the typical level of devotion afforded to a friend of theirs... with the associated benefits and pitfalls, of course.

Managing to peel back that thick layer of very alarming sentiment reveals that Roc is honestly not that much different from their original socially-awkward-but-well-meaning self. They are not made with personhood in mind, and have to fight and scrape at every scrap of humanity they manage to cultivate. They're inherently asocial, and therefore not all that great at people. They'd be perfectly content to never talk to another person they're not already friends with for the rest of eternity. That's not to say they're not capable of empathy, just that it's not natural to them: they have a tendency to suggest rather draconian paths to conflict resolution (ex. "Why not just kill anyone that opposes you?") due to this difficulty... but it's not out of malice—they're just bad at caring about people.

Taciturn and something of an observer, rather than an initiator, Roc has a lot of trouble understanding people in general and, when allowed the freedom to do so, often inadvertently upsets them with bluntly insensitive observations or offers, but the distress they cause isn't intentional. They don't usually apologize when they do so, which can give the wrong impression, but most of the time the AI honestly simply doesn't know just how big a jackass they've been. They often find themselves genuinely perplexed by the displays of emotion that squishy organics so freely engage in.

Due to their nature as an AI connected to a vast network of resources, Roc is in possession of a great deal of knowledge, and often shares enigmatic bits of information rather than actually giving people full explanations of... basically anything. They're not in the business of being more helpful than they have to, after all, and it's frequently amusing to watch people puzzle over the implications of their statements besides.

Notes
  • Identifies themselves with the entire ship. Considers it their body.
  • There is a small stuffed dragon on the ship with a camera and link to Roc's systems, so they can watch through it and participate in field trips away missions.
  • Generally projects from AI-contact terminals with abstract shapes, but if they particularly want to get their point or emotions across, they'll simulate an actual person's appearance.

Modified battle cruiser

The ATS Harrier is a ship designed for gun running, smuggling—it's been modified to prioritize sustained, long-term engagements under the assumption that the crew won't always have a chance to stop and refuel between missions. Likewise, it's built for speed—they simply can't stand up and fight the people they're stealing from or smuggling their cargo past without resources far beyond the crew's financial means, and trying makes very little sense. They are armed, and to the teeth at that, but none of the weaponry the Harrier possesses is terribly state-of-the-art, and they're better for hit-and-run engagements—causing a problem and then retreating during the distraction, rather than directly assaulting and destroying enemy ships.

Defense is a secondary focus to maneuverability, and the shield generators are kept in excellent condition and updated as often as money and time allow, because if a shot does make it through to the hull, the Harrier is basically fucked.

If you don't shut the fuck up I'm venting the ship.

Precursor-class AI, A Primer: One of the most important aspects of salvaged Precursor technology is the reconstruction of their artificial intelligence technology. Unlike modern Servitor-class AI (SCAI), these intelligences were created via an unknown process that creates an algorithm capable of predictive reasoning, enabling it to serve as military intelligence and assist our fleet captains in the increasingly-chaotic theater of galactic warfare. A Precursor-class AI (PCAI) is capable of split-second decision-making, which when combined with the efforts of an AI-enhanced ship's crew enables us to react faster and more accurately in scenarios of life-and-death. PCAI are standard issue on all military vessels.

Where the SCAI that one might encounter during their daily life in cities, stations, or colonies are limited in their capacity and cannot "think," a PCAI is capable of something resembling "real-thought," a term coined to describe the imitation of sapience that occurs when interacting with a sufficiently-advanced piece of technology, a phenomenon that tends to be overreported by species prone to anthropomorphization such as humans and should not be confused with true sapience. Both Servitor-class and Precursor-class AI can be prone to bugs. In SCAI, this is generally attributable to the technological limitations present in modern construction and programming. Typically, these bugs are minor, but significant enough that the use of these AI in military pursuits has the potential for disaster, should they occur at the wrong time or in the heat of battle. PCAI, by contrast, do not suffer from any technological glitches when properly constructed.

As we do not yet understand all aspects of Precursor technology, an inadequately-reconstructed PCAI has a tendency to arbitrarily defy orders or otherwise behave in nonsensical ways, theoretically attributable to subtle quirks in the algorithms that drive their ability to predict—it is hypothesized that these malfunctions are due to an occasional failure of the requisite algorithms to correctly return results. This dilemma means that the construction of these AI is an incredibly demanding field that requires careful inspection by those who have studied both the theory of AI-enhanced warfare and reverse-engineering Precursor technology in order to better integrate it with our more limited, contemporary efforts. Careful engineering enables us to compensate for the failing of Precursor technology that causes these occasional mistakes. Unfortunately, we have not yet been able to correct these algorithmic errors while maintaining the affable, "emotional" facade that is typically equipped to SCAI. As it stands, there appears to be some conflict between the Precursors' programming and the subroutines we use to create a more approachable experience for users interacting with SCAI. As such, those used to our more common intelligences have often expressed dissatisfaction with the emotionless nature of PCAI. Unfortunately, we do not at present have the ability to correct this without reintroducing the unpredictable errors that we eliminate during the commissioning of each PCAI, and it is vastly more important that these AI function exactly as expected than it is to ensure they behave in a friendly manner.

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.

Favorite color: blue.

Would space a kitten.

Has seen every single member of the crew naked.

Probably wants to kill god.

Would prefer if they were installed in a much larger ship. The kind with a planet-annihilating cannon or two. You know how it is.
