Fall From Grace

Before the First Fall, The Angel of Death was considered one of the most powerful beings in Heaven. It had the power to control the flow of life and the souls that powered both Heaven and Hell. Upon Satan’s rebellion, due to Death’s insubordination, many of their powers were removed. They couldn’t outright replace Death, but taking away many of his duties and abilities left it more subservient to the universe.

Death refused to reap the souls of the rebellion before their time, thus was considered an enemy by the Arc Angels. After the Second Fall Death was “demoted” to something that was not holy nor as hellish a punishment as the Princes received. Like the other Horsemen, Death became an outlier to Heaven, Hell, and Earth, only serving their own duties placed upon them over time.

Aftermath

The world was unwelcoming to Death but Death sought only to make their work as painless and peaceful as possible. After the rebellions, Death realized that needless cruelty would only hinder souls passing into the afterlife. Being the faceless reaper, Death took on many personas familiar to humanity in order to make the job easier. Right now, Hugo is the current presentation Death has made for himself. Other notable presentations are: Osiris, Hades, and La Muerte.

After an abrupt addition to Hell created due to majority ruling, Despair was added to the many levels. The Horsemen found a home here and now wander the streets acting as the management of the level run by Baphomet. War became the mayor, Famine a business executive, Pestilence waste management, and Death himself became the justice many residents of Despair never received in life.

Recount

After the Great War many audits took place over the levels and spheres. Many souls went unaccounted for and even now some are missing. Hugo’s taken charge along with a team of beings known as Shinigami to fix the count. Although things are fixed for future souls, he’s still searching out souls missing from both Heaven and Hell.
