Adpative, Loyal, Perceptive, Cynical, Calculating, Aloof

Previously the Beastguard of the royal Amaranth house, Sylvester now lives in a humble mountain village alongside his older brother, Chester. Inside their cozy cobblestone cottage, they spend most of their days tending to Chester’s many plants and reading books by the fireplace. Sylvester Basilheart is an AU version of Sylvester R. Walker.

|| History ||

  • TW/CW: abuse and inslavement

Pipe fox dragons are a solitary species that most often live far away from any of the villages or kingdoms of Pippaf. (Due to a history of persecution from other species. In the past, they were hunted for sport as it was believed their flesh and fur had magical properties.) They hatch out of their eggs knowing how to take care of themselves and are not raised by those who hatched them.

At age seven Sylvester was captured, taken from his mountain homeland and sold to the highest bidder. Pipe fox dragons were exceedingly rare and revered creatures, and owning one was a great show of power and wealth. Although he passed through a few hands, he was eventually purchased by the royal Amaranth house, where he stayed for several years.

He was immediately instated as the Amaranth’s Beastguard. Any house of respectable standing had one, a Beastguard. Traditionally, it was a position given to the most physically or magically apt member of the house, someone who could defend the house if need be. At some point though, it had morphed into a way for the house to show off their wealth and power, flaunting any rare or beautiful creature they could get their hands on (but if the creature did have some magical or physical prowess, all the better).

While it was no secret that Beastguards were often mistreated by their house, seen as tools and possessions rather than individuals, Sylvester’s conditions were particularly cruel. The child was housed within the Amaranth dungeons in chains and muzzle (the house wary of the pipe fox dragon’s elemental powers and strength), and only let out when he was to be flaunted by the royals or made to do tricks (and even then, he was forced to wear a magicked collar that dampened his elemental powers and strength, making any attempts at escape or resistance futile). He was also pressed not to speak and was punished if he didn’t act accordingly.

At age 12 though, he happened to meet someone called Chester Basilheart. Chester was a servant of the Amaranth house, and worked as their gardener/doctor. Although their interactions were spare, and they only really met by chance, they soon became good friends.

Once Chester learned of Sylvester’s awful treatment under the Amaranth house, he worked to devise a plan to break Sylvester out of his imprisonment. With the help of a few other individuals, both Chester and Sylvester escaped to a distant mountain village where they now reside in peace.

|| Trivia and Other Musings ||

  • All pipe fox dragons have an elemental power, Sylvester’s is ice. Sylvester himself is often cool to the touch, his fur silky and chilled. When he sneezes, sometimes he accidentally freezes things. He can cause the temperature to drop if he is distressed (and even cause it to snow if particularly so).
  • He loves to help Chester with the garden and especially with cooking. His favorite thing that Chester makes is probably soup (and those mouth watering honey pear tarts he bakes from the pear tree out front). He is also always happy to lend a hand if some of the villagers need help with their own gardening or with moving something heavy.
  • The children of the village love him… he doesn’t know why. He often serves as a playground, children hanging off of him and asking for rides. At first it was a bit overwhelming, but nowadays playing with the children always brings him a soft happiness.
  • Pipe fox dragons like to howl at night and use it to communicate long distance since most live away from each other. The howl sounds like heavy/large wind chimes. They can also purr.
  • Sylvester adores reading, novels of any and all kinds, and can often be found with his muzzle deep in a book. His and Chester’s house is lined with shelves upon shelves of books because of it, some just piled in random places because they ran out of space (especially since sometimes they buy two copies of a book so they can read them at the same time). He particularly loves old historical texts and fantasy novels.
  • Alongside reading, Sylvester also has a passion for writing. He’s still pretty shy with showing his work to others, but he enjoys writing poems, short stories, and even longer works with intricately developed characters and worlds. He often has a notebook or journal not far from reach.
  • He also has a hobby for making nature sculptures. They started as a way to sort through his emotions, but now he mostly just makes them for fun. Usually they are fashioned from woven sticks or carved wood or stone, embellished with pretty riverbed pebbles and painted with natural pigments. Sometimes he even enchants them so they sprout with moss or flowers or herbs. Although most of them lie amidst forest paths or are placed around their house, he has gotten a few commissions from the villagers.
