Garvey is an enigma to the Valencia clan. As it goes, regular presence of Fade among other creatures is exceedingly rare, and even rarer is a fade voluntarily choosing to be a public figure, as Garvey has. Despite this, Garvey has been a figure at Valencia for around 40 years and a known advisor to the current Dokad, September Valencia. His main role is taking care of the organization and upkeep of Valencia’s extensive library (and he will absolutely hunt down someone with overdue items). Garvey’s secondary purpose is a doctor, particularly when it comes to rare ailments and poisons (though he has knowledge in alleviating many ills). Many creatures are hesitant to seek him out for this purpose however, as his bedside manner leaves much to be desired. That, and his refined and pompous demeanor seems to either charm or immediately antagonize others with little in-between.

Though fades interacting with non-fades, or ‘tangibles’, is uncommon, this can be explained by Garvey’s fadely obsession. All fades have obsessions (a topic that drives their entire being and must be engaged with lest they turn ‘rabid’) and Garvey’s is History, more specifically, history of creature relations, war, magic, and medicine. Garvey directly interacting with tangibles is a way for him to study history as it happens and at the best detail.

Yet… many at Valencia have wondered why he interacts with tangibles to the extent he does, he would certainly be able to fulfill his obsession without all the public appearances and his close relations to September and her family. Truthfully, these interactions often seem to do little more than exhaust him.

Though Garvey can be a hard creature to hunt down, often disappearing from Valencia for weeks or months at a time doing research, anycreature who speaks with him for more than a couple of minutes will notice the weariness weighing over him. The heavy lines under his eyes, the slow, measured way he moves. This is in jarring contrast to his airy, verbose language and the way he seems always to keep himself busy. Regardless of his efforts, it’s evident that there is always something needling at his mind – perhaps multiple things. Even more concerning, despite Fades being known for their centuries-long lifespans and large reservoirs of magical power, Garvey conducts himself as if he’s one wrong move away from crumbling. Perhaps that is what makes Garvey’s enduring presence most puzzling, he seems like he would rather be any place else.

The creatures who most closely interact with Garvey are September’s direct family and other record-keepers of Valencia. While Garvey’s passion and dedication to history is well admired, and many record-keepers know that Garvey is the creature to go to with his wealth of knowledge and research, he can be rather domineering and likes to have things organized his way. He will listen to arguments contrary to his opinions, but often disregards them (digging up cited evidence, if necessary). Though if someone’s research topics/interests align with his own, he is more than happy to share and aid in the pursuit of knowledge. Frankly, the recorder-keepers of Valencia rely on Garvey for his knowledge and expertise just as much as they have to deal with him and his eccentrics. Although, when a situation becomes too annoying or too emotional for Garvey, he tends to disappear into his study (or elsewhere) for a couple weeks (this is one well-known strategy for dealing with Garvey).

September and her family see a lesser-known side to Garvey. Just as eccentric and oftentimes bitingly sarcastic, but with a greater hesitation and awkward-attention than he would grant most other creatures. Garvey only interacts with tangibles to pursue history, to pursue his obsession. Garvey interacts with September and her family regularly without this pursuing his obsession in the slightest.

Trivia

Terrible bedside manner frankly. He has doctoring knowledge bc he likes the science and history of it not bc he likes doctoring.

u will not see him without the neckbow/scarf and if u do he's killing u.

Reads a book series for a month straight nonstop without moving location and forgets to eat drink or talk to another being. ofc he read majority of the books within the first 3-4 days and the rest of the time is spent rereading, annotating, anaylyzing, and planning further research.

Occasionally calls September 'Sept'. Likewise, September will exceedingly rarely call Garvey 'Vee'.

Has 3 walk-in closets full of neck-bows + scarves. September cut him off after the third one.

Regularly sends hatemail to Renfinus, and sometimes tries to egg-on Ameokk and the beastguard to make things difficult for Pyridekk/Renfinus if they can.

Will only go to the diamond to monitor Ameokk's fights, but he doesn't do this for most of the fights. Occasionally asks Ameokk for diamond/beastguard drama + gossip.

Not an early riser. Sleeps most of the day tbh. This has only gotten worse the last 2 decades or so. Will kill you if you try to talk to him before he properly wakes up.

Very very rarely reverts to his fragile form, even while sleeping. Although, fades don't have to do this as often as nonfades to stay healthy, they have a 85/15 ratio to primal/fragile rather than the ~60/40 for most creatures. Still, Garvey reverts less than what's healthy for him.

Surprisingly sentimental, keeps all things given to him (in a secret place no one knows).

Backstory

Wouldn't you like to know weather boy--> A lot of Garv is meant to be a mystery so... I'm not putting everything on this

Served as Kirjnhas to a clan that was dissolved around ~130 yrs ago. Knowledge of this event/what dissolved the clan(+ Garv's reasoning for even wanting to be a Kirjnhas) has mostly been lost or burried, but Garvey won't deny his Kirjnhas history if asked. Won't tell you anything else but that though

Fought competitvely in the valencia diamonds for around ~70 yrs before formally associating/joining Valencia. Garvey was known for his brutality and only the truly suicidal took him on. He rarely lost and would always mutilate his opponents, often killing them. He refused to speak to the press or answer any questions into his personal life, motives, or even opinions on other diamond fighters. Though sometimes, could be bribed for a few words if given an interesting book or item. Once he met Hkoa and September (at the end of the ~70 yrs) his fighting became more intermittant until he eventually stopped entirely. It's been ~40 yrs since Garvey has fought in the diamonds, but he is still well-known there and creatures often tell stories of his most insane fights.

Has published 20+ historical accountings on various topics. Some research and others his personal accounts of events he was present for. Well known among tangible(nonfade) historians and fade historians alike. He stopped actively printing his own books ~130 yrs ago, so this has raised their value (particularly his signed copies), but other groups have continued to print them (with his permission).

Renfinus L. Pyridekk

[ Ex-boyfriend + ex-research buddy ] Renfinus and Garvey have a long and complicated history, Garvey knew of Renfi in the first century of his life, but didn't start interacting with him until later. Fades normally don't associate with eachother to begin with, but Renfi and Garvey bonded over overlap in their obessions. Renfinus's obsession surrounds the study of magic both history and practice, and Garvey's the study of history of magic, war, creature relations, and medicine. They began interacting just out of mutual research interest, sharing information and helping eachother obtain further information + bouncing ideas off of eachother.

As this interaction continued, they grew closer. Research partnerships among fade aren't uncommon, but the nature of Renfinus and Garvey's partnership was (and was notorious in gossip among other fades), they shared more than just research. Perhaps because of Garvey's closer association with tangibles and his greater understanding of romance within tangible culture, he desired something similar from Renfinus. Though Renfinus played along, Garvey knew he didn't see it exactly the same, but that was fine.

at one point, Renfinus, with Garvey's voluntary consent, performed a operation on him and gave Garvey a keyaa-enhancement implant (which is in Garvey's neck area). This initially worked as desired but has since resulted in unanticipated consequences. Unknown to Garvey, Renfinus was not completely truthful about the nature of this implant

they have a falling out / break up and its big and dramatic but I'll be real i haven't written that concretely yet LOL. In modern/current times Garv and Renf both hate eachother and bully eachother at every given opportunity. They send eachother hatemail.

September Valencia

[ Charge ] The nature of September and Garvey's relationship is a question of both curiosity and tension for much of Valencia. It is common knowledge that Garvey has known September since she's been a young girl, but that's about it. September, secretive and confident as she is, often asks Garvey for advice, and appears to take his opinion much more seriously than most. Likewise, Garvey will hover around September and her children with an air of protectiveness he shows not to any other creatures. Yet September will often speak rudely to Garvey, look at him with disdain, disregard his opinions as much as she asks for them. Garvey will complain in the same breath as he offers his wisdom and support, and linger though it's clear he would rather be anywhere else.

August Valencia

[ Charge ] Garvey's relationship with August is not a publicly known one. Garvey has tried to remove himself from August's life, from September's childrens lives, as much as he could, and resoutely failed. Especially with August, he's faught his fondess for. He was cold to August when the spinecat was younger and truly regrets it, but has done little to let the boy know since. The valencia library was a solace for August as a young boy and concurrently, and given the library is Garvey's domain, it was hard not to interact with August. Entirely possibly, yes, but as the time passed Garvey found himself not wanting to. August shared a passion for knowledge and history similar to his own, had intersting insights, and more than anything else, was a sweet creature who was good company. And Garvey knew the boy had been rejected by his mother, by his clan, so he had no other company.

Additionally, there was something odd about August's keyaa signerature, something that Garvey could sense via his keyaa-implant the instant he met the young boy. Odd, possibly dangerous, possibly concerning. Garvey dedicated himself to monitoring August's development, even without directly interacting with him. Garvey knew his keyaa-implant toyed with his own emotions (an unsavory unpredicted side-affect), and for some reason, it was drawn to August, drawn to protect him and know him. This was partly the reason for Garvey's coldness towards August for many years, he couldn't tell what feelings were his own and which were influenced by the implant.

However Garvey's relationship with August is complicated by his relationship to September, most notably, with Septembers abusive behavior towards August and her other children. Garvey, at this time, and resolved himself not to get attached to others, to not interfere with the lives of tangibles as strongly as he had done in the past. For some time, he removes himself from these situations, does not comment, or specifically plans to place himself in a position will he will not listen or hear about it, so he's not tempted to act. He eventually regrets this as well.

Ameokk Valencia

[ Amek's Doctor | Charge ] As much as Garvey fights his fondness for August, it is even worse with Ameokk. One, since they are not September's biological progeny, Garvey doesn't feel responible for them in the same way as her other children. Two, Garvey initially relation to Ameokk was when September originally had Ameokk prisoner, Garvey was instructed to keep Ameokk alive but weak, september fearing Ameokk's unknown storm spirit abilities, and Garvey being the only one with knowledge on Storm spirit biology. Because of this, Garvey treated Ameokk more like a task, a project, rather than an individual.

Once again, Garvey had decided not to get attached to tangibles anymore, none else but September, his sympathy and compassion would only be damaging in the long run for everyone. This attitude became distincly more difficult as August and Ameokk's friendship and attachment quickly grew, and Ameokk eventually got adopted by September herself.

Although Garvey continues to be Ameokk's primary doctor in current times, he cannot deny his fondness has also grown for Ameokk (which again, he hides from Ameokk and others). He has some solidarity with Ameokk aswell, they are both of rare species that are commonly misunderstood and demonized by other creatures. Yet Garvey has still mostly removed himself from interacting with the blatant abusive within September and Ameokk's relationship, holding onto the distance of Ameokk not being a direct offspring of September.
