Profile

Formerly a magical toymaker that sold his wares to the rich, Reyart studied the occult for an inexpensive means of creating intelligent dolls (beyond the obviously unsound method of shoving somebody's soul in and selling a haunted doll). His research was interrupted by the outbreak of a war between the gods of his cosmologically backwater world and the most powerful mages. He was quickly drafted by the most powerful mage of the region, working to craft magic items for the war effort. It wasn't glamorous, but it kept him out of the fighting.

At least, it did, until the fighting came for the supply workshops, and he was forced out to the front lines of the city's defense. When the assault was beaten back, Reyart immediately set out to find work vital enough that he wouldn't see deployment again. Using his occult skill with objects, he found a place within the mage's inquisition asking holy symbols and other trappings of the clergy who their owners were. People might lie, but their robes couldn't.

When the gods were finally slain, Reyart continued in a similar line of work as a troubleshooter for one of the powerful mages, carrying out investigations into troublesome occurrences.

Reyart is an unconventional mage, with an unusually strong focus on the magic of objects. He can read their histories, and even ask them questions in a limited fashion. His research into affordably animated dolls means he carries around a large number of stuffed animals with various specialties, which he can imbue with a temporary facsimile of life. Having only trained to fight with what was on hand, when pressed to combat he wields a shape-changing cane, and relies on his ability to exploit its magical properties.

The skull of his cravat- either a rat or a bird depending on mood and need- is less a fashion choice than it is an emergency focus for his temporary animation, which isn't limited to dolls. The dark glasses he wears are for work, and intended to make him more intimidating or impressive- results are mixed. When off the job, he wears similar glasses without any tint. His suit is made of alchemically treated cloth, and serves as armor. It's also much heavier than it would seem.
