Lucien Wells

Raw ambient magic can be incredibly harmful. Exposure to large amounts of it have a solid chance of turning an ordinary person into an unawakened magic user, but the chance of that is equal to turning them into an Adept with a really shitty power, and the chance of death or severe brain damage is much greater. Needless to say, only those desperate for power willingly expose themselves to raw ambient magic.

(NOTE TO SELF and others: I'm going to rework his backstory so he's not a Rich Orphan, I've already got another rich orphan and that trait fits her better)

Lucien's family were wealthy businessmen who work in agriculture, and it was when they were visiting a small farming community that they owned most of that tragedy struck. Lucien's parents were greedy borgeouise, who exploited the working-class farmers, and one immensely powerful wizard took offense to that. In preparation, he put countless hours into constructing a new Hellmouth; a rare type of direct portal to Hell that, when opened, allows free travel between the realms. Opening it would release a countless horde of demons, each one looking to find their own personal paradise on Earth. With a single command-word, the Wizard's longstanding plan was put into action. Every farmer in a several mile radius was teleported to the outskirts of town, while Lucien, his parents, and a few dozen others were left behind. The Hellmouth immediately opened, releasing a massive explosion of raw magical energy in all directions, killing most of those present right off the bat. Then the demons poured out. Lucien's parents were quickly slaughtered. Lucien himself was wounded, but awakened as an Adept. With new Berserk powers, he slayed demons for countless hours before the Council of Welshara was able to send a squad of immensely powerful magic users to clean up and close the Hellmouth. The Wizard who created the Hellmouth was never found.

Lucien suffered greatly from the magical explosion. He lost his right arm in the carnage. His shitty magic powers give him anger management issues, and virtually anything that raises his heart rate can cause him to lash out violently. And he suffers from minor brain damage, rendering him easily disoriented, and with chronic migraines. He also has PTSD from the demon invasion. But, he's found his calling in life; slaying demons who have found their way to Earth, and making it safer for everyone else.

Lucien is a very carefully guarded person. He's uncomfortable in just about every social situation because of his "curse," and he spends more effort in keeping calm than he does in actively talking. So at first, everyone always seems him as super gruff, serious, intimidating... and boring. It's only when he feels totally safe with someone that he'll open up, and reveal his fairly good-natured personality. He understands trauma and is pretty good at consoling people who have gone through it. When he gets excited he gets pretty touchy-feely, grabbing his friends into tight side-hugs, and he will laugh pretty loudly at just about anything. He loves alcohol, and not just because they weaken his magic and make it easier to control, and is always pretty happy in a bar with friends so he can laugh and forget his troubles. If he could, he would get rid of his "curse," but no matter what he would try to find a way to keep fighting demons. Lucien's not the kind of person to cry when he's sad, he will get angry and bitter instead, and nobody likes being around him in that state. He also considers being around people he cares about for prolonged periods of time a "pipe dream" and will still try to spend lots of time alone.

• Lucien's weapon of choice is a massive buster-sword made from Titan Bone; known for being supernaturally lightweight, durable, and sharp, though also unflexible and prone to shattering from a strong enough blunt force.
• Lucien carries a first-aid kit, and can patch up injuries very quickly, in sharp contrast to his Berserker fighting style.
• When he first met Amvira, he chopped off her two left arms. They grew back, but she was pissed off about it for ages.
• The skull on his hip belongs to a particularly nasty Sheolisk. He had the skull specially treated to keep it preserved. As long as it does not break, that Sheolisk will be unable to revive in Hell.
• He avoids caffeine and sugary drinks for the same reason he prefers alcohol. They can elevate his heart-rate and cause him to "beast out"
• Lucien likes pineapple on pizza
• Lucien is pretty fat, but underneath it all is a significant amount of muscle.
• Lucien practices various "calm" martial arts like Yoga and Tai Chi, to build up his strength and willpower.

In-Game Fighting Style

Lucien is a bruiser, more on the squishy high-damage end, as opposed to the durable low-damage end. His base attack power isn't superb, but he has an incredibly powerful passive that ups his attack as his health goes down. This, plus numerous other passives and actives that up his attack, and he can become a high damage powerhouse. He fights better against crowds of enemies, but has a few abilities for taking down stronger opponents, including the ever-simple "Execute" ability, that instantly kills a target with low enough HP. His First-Aid ability is very important, allowing him to heal himself or an ally every 5 turns for a significant amount, regardless of whether they're living, a demon/undead, or an artifical being that can't be healed.

Lucien's promotions are Berserker, and Ravager. Berserker gives him some more feast-or-famine abilites, including upping his low-health damage at the cost of reducing his attack power at full HP, as well as some self-damaging moves, but also a few self-healing moves. Ravager gives him more single-target damage and durability, letting him stay in the fray at low HP longer.
