Nautica

Nautica was found washed up on the shore when she was 2 and was brought to an orphanage in Hometown's run by two men who had resolved to care for all abandoned or orphaned children as most families refused to take in non-blood relatives. The men were Gabe, a very smart tinkerer who could fix nearly anything, and Halt, a gentle and empathetic man with a knack for weaving and sewing. They named her Nautica which means "of the sea" and happily accepted her into their family. She was happy growing up with her adopted family (which was always changing and growing with new arrivals) but couldn’t help feeling out of place due to her atypical family. She joined a sailing crew at 16 eager to go see what else the world had to offer and met Owen on the boat. Owen was another orphan from a nearby village who grew up on the streets and could effortlessly navigate the high ropes of the vessel. The two were the youngest on the boat and got along very easily, coming to admire one another greatly over the two years they spent on the crew. When they returned to Cormileon they decided to get married to the excitement of Nautica’s fathers and built a house near the orphanage, picking the last name Fisher after their profession. They were both very excited to start their own family (and fit into the society of Cormileon), but after a year of trying discovered they couldn’t have children together. They were disappointed and decided to return to the sea together, spending happy months on a large fishing vessel. One night they got caught in a terrible storm, Owen was swept off board when the hook that he had secured himself to came loose. Nautica tried to catch it, but the hook struck her eye instead, blinding it. She returned to Cormileon heavy-hearted and moved back in with her parents, supporting them by fishing in small vessels close to shore. Nautica feels hopeless for the future, she’s content helping her parents but it wasn’t what she expected out of life and feels she has no true direction on what to do next.
