She was a fairly good caretaker, and cared for Grifen dearly. She took care of him for the first 13 years of his life, never seeing his father. But one day Isaac came back and took Grifen back to his place.

Issac Sullivan

Issac was Grifen's abusive father who was only introduced in his high school years. On a drunken impulse he demanded Abigail to give back his son. He felt like he needed him in order to take care of what little of Melanie he had left. During Grifen's high school years he was an alcoholic and was abusive towards him. He constantly blamed him for his mother’s death and discouraged him on practically anything he did.

Melanie met Issac when she was homeless, she offered her a place to stay the night and she was very grateful. Needing a job and seeing his apartment in disarray she offered that she could be his personal maid if she could just live there. On acceptance of the offer, their bond grew stronger and she found herself falling in love with him. Disillusioned by her depression and lack of contact with other people, she was blind to Issac's toxicity. He did not treat her well even when they were romantically involved, she dealt with his occasional verbal and physical abuse, inadvertently worsening her depression and anxiety.
But the couple, convinced they were in love, eventually married. Before and after their marriage Melanie was using birth control pills since Issac did not want a child. But one time she was given fake pills since Issac used an unreliable source to get cheap birth control. This caused her to become pregnant.
While pregnant with Grifen she was careless, she had issues with drug use and alcoholism. Even though she tried her best to not abuse substances, the withdrawal dragged her back to her habits. That combined with her antepartum depression made her feel more inclined to use drugs during her pregnancy. Issac not wanting a child did not help to restrain her, he even encouraged it in hopes of possibly producing a stillborn since he didn't think an abortion was "natural."
She died after giving birth to Grifen due to being in poor health. She died a few hours after his birth and it devastated Issac.
Grifen's depression is partly genetic from Melanie who was also diagnosed with clinical depression as a young adult.
