Above all else, Daystar is an oddly compassionate cat. Though his first clan member found him guarding the floodplains all on his lonesome, Daystar was originally raised by a tight-knit trio who taught him to value empathy above all else. From them, he learned that nothing good could be gained by resorting to expected malicious habits between territorial cats. His ingrained ability to remain solicitous allows him to integrate stray cats into his clan and find friends and allies in some of the unlikeliest places. Though soft-spoken and sometimes cripplingly insecure, he thrives on positive interaction and devotes a near laser-like focus to his personal relationships. Though it can take time for him to form relationships, he holds onto them with a steadfast vigor that some cats admittedly envy.

A little deeper

But, the attention he puts in his relationships means that he sometimes neglects his own health in favor of those he loves. He’s quick to uplift the talents of those he admires, but frequently degrades himself with a false sense of inadequacy. He views his social awkwardness (seasons upon seasons of stuttering around other cats or having strangers’ eyes glaze over with boredom or exasperation whenever he’d try to engage them did wonders for his self-esteem) as one of the greatest of his ‘deadly sins.’ Through the work of establishing himself as the leader of Floodclan and the formation of his relationship with his closest confidant and mate, Lightningsong, he was able to alleviate these fears to a certain point. Unfortunately, in his darkest moments, the thoughts still linger.

However, Daystar’s shortcomings barely seem to hold a candle to his innate drive. His need to pioneer new ideas and preserve the teachings of his parental figures frequently pushes him to discover new truths and secrets about the region he now watches over. In these moments, now becoming more frequent as he gets more comfortable with being a leader his clanmates can depend on, his self-critical nature is crucial as a check on his attitude and decisions. Additionally, his nature also fluidly transitions into introspection that allows him to better understand his close link to Starclan. However, Daystar’s personality still stretches far beyond the formal definition of a budding leader.

Two Sides to a Coin

With his clanmates (who he affectionately refers to as his family), Daystar is one of the most approachable clanmates despite his position. His innate awkwardness comes off as almost endearing, and he’s always willing to lend a paw or an ear to aid his clanmates. His sweet and dependable nature makes him easy to count on, but on the flip-side he doesn’t take well to being slighted or snubbed even though he’s relatively even-tempered. Since he’s not very prone to violent tactics, he frequently becomes passive-aggressive to cats who piss him off. His ire burns slow and cold, and his revenge is sometimes legendary. He’s no stranger to using humiliation to make a point, either.

Make no mistake— underneath Daystar’s pleasant character lies a shrewd individual. His age has morphed him into an perceptive tomcat, and being more than aware of his physical shortcomings (few as they are) he’s turned both to diplomacy and cutthroat, behind the scenes business practices to get what he and his clan needs. Though being naturally benign helped to smooth out his interactions, he doesn’t command a full region just by being loving or kind.

Major Relationships

Lightningsong [ mate ]

Daystar and Lightningsong, though leader and deputy, are also close mates. Their relationship didn’t start out this way; it took moons of initially wary banter and later trust that could transcend words and looks to get where they are today. Even if Lightningsong had not joined Floodclan as Daystar’s first clanmate, however, Daystar is confident he would have still chosen the large tom to be his deputy. Daystar admires Lightningsong for both his confidence and strength (sometimes to do things Daystar simply can’t) and Lightningsong adores Daystar for his compassion, among other things. The two frequently work as a pair— major decisions commonly don’t commence unless both are on board with it, but Lightningsong’s trust in Daystar’s decisions runs so deep that he frequently defers to his mate when dealing with the clan’s future unless he truly has a bad feeling about a situation. However, from their separate backgrounds, the two believe in the importance of debate, and many of their options are hashed out between themselves before they put them up to the clan at large to review, or simply implement.

The more casual aspects of their relationship is a sight to behold, however. When they’re not focused on getting something done, they frequently enjoy teasing and ribbing each other and sometimes they annoy each other just to be contrary. They also frequently spar with each other and come out to be a good match by testing each others’ weaknesses. Daystar has to go up against a larger foe, and Lightningsong has to try and outwit an opponent admittedly smarter and faster than himself. However, Daystar’s empathy means that he’s always been better attuned to Lightningsong’s moods than the reverse, so Daystar frequently pulls back when he feels like the short-tempered tom’s had enough. But, what Daystar doesn’t seem to realize in these moments is that Lightningsong genuinely doesn’t mind Daystar pushing his buttons. As a generally physical tom, Lightningsong loves nothing more than to tussle, spar, and argue with Daystar, because at the end of the day Lightningsong knows that they can make up. And, well, Lightningsong finds it glorious to see the normally even-keeled cinnamon tabby puff up in righteous anger. Lightningsong’s no stranger to Daystar’s passive aggression, though. Daystar gives a mean cold shoulder.
