Background

All her life, Bel's lived transitionally - her mother was a manager of a major company and her father a humble car repairman who had married young and seperated amiably a few years later, and as a child Bel lived with a foot in both worlds, hopping from continent to continent with her mother and spending her summer months every year with her father in Canada. She moved too often to try to befriend her peers, so she turned to a wide and varied lineup of online circles: virtual pet sites, conspiracy theorist forums, and everything in between.

The one friend that really stuck was a girl named Heather who lived on the other side of the world, and though their friendship was casual Bel valued her encouragement and companionship deeply. When she was seventeen, Heather abruptly became distant, more than could be explained than if they were simply drifting apart, and Bel, who was going through her own troubles and worries about her future, left it at that.

Until one day, Heather never replied to her daily messages: nor the next day, nor the day after that, no matter how many times Bel tried to contact her. She went through denial, anger, depression - her grades plunged, and she never told anyone why. A few months later, convinced that Heather had simply seen her for the inadequate friend she was, Bel deleted their chatlogs and all of her social media accounts. Later she bitterly regretted it, but by then it was much too late.

Life went on. Against her mother's protests, Bel didn't apply to any colleges. Instead she signed up for a trucking company that would take her across the entire North American continent or nowhere, if she wanted. Five years later she was earning six figures a year and living in her truck full-time, and her parents called her every week to urge her to quit and look for another job. But the open road filled the emptiness inside Bel that seemed to swell whenever she was alone, and so she kept evading their concerns and going on long-haul trips - until, on a cold, foggy night, her truck was crushed in a twenty-car pile up.
